Biometrics Analysis Unit

The Biometrics Analysis Unit (BAU) performs advanced latent print and DNA exploitation of improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and associated materials resulting in scientific information that yields timely and actionable biometric intelligence for investigative use. BAU operates as an intelligence-based latent print and DNA group to support the United States Government

(USG) and international partners’ global ability to defeat and counter the IED threat worldwide.

Specifically, the BAU Latent Print Squad uses friction ridge analysis to make critical biometric associations to persons of intelligence interest. Evidentiary items are processed using state of the art equipment and chemical techniques to develop latent prints on a wide range of surfaces.

Images of latent prints are searched against millions of known reference holdings within the

FBI’s Next Generation Identification (NGI) system. Images of latent prints are also shared with counterpart entities to create a flow of biometric intelligence on a global scale. The BAU DNA

Squad performs nuclear DNA analysis, known and unknown samples are analyzed using a semi-automated process that allows for timely results. Unknown DNA profiles developed from items of evidence are compared to the known profiles of individuals and uploaded to the appropriate databases to be searched on a regular basis. In this way, the BAU DNA squad is able to both associate IED-related events to one another and connect those to individuals. BAU provides support to FBI full investigations, prosecution support to partnering countries, Special Agent

Bomb Technicians (SABTs), and the Intelligence Community (IC).
