1. Scope.
1.1 Identification.
This document lists the System/Subsystem Specifications for the AN/TPX-42A(V)
Shipboard Air Traffic Control Recorder-Reproducer Replacement. This specification applies to the Recorder-Reproducer hardware and software components that constitute the AN/TPX-
42A(V) system.
1.2 System Overview.
1.2.1 AN/TPX-42A(V)
The AN/TPX-42A(V) Recorder-Reproducer Replacement effort consists of replacing the existing Racal Wordsafe Maxima Recorder-Reproducer with a new Recorder-Reproducer in the AN/TPX-42A(V) Carrier Air Traffic Control Center/Amphibious Air Traffic Control
Direct Altitude and Identity Readout (CATCC/AATC DAIR) systems. The current
Wordsafe Maxima Recorder-Reproducer utilizes magnetic tapes (VHS tapes) for the recording medium. The Wordsafe Maxima Recorder-Reproducer has been used in the
AN/TPX-42A(V) system for over ten years and has reached obsolescence. New parts are no longer available from the manufacturer. Current technological advances now provide much more reliable and secure recording and playback capabilities utilizing Ethernet data interfaces and hard disk drives for recording media.
The AN/TPX-42A(V) CATCC/AATC DAIR systems are an essential part of the air traffic control operations carried out on amphibious assault ships (LHD and LHA classes) and aircraft carriers (CVN class ships). The CATCC/AATC DAIR system provides situational awareness to shipboard Air Traffic Controllers (AC), enhancing their ability to provide safe separation, launch, recovery and monitoring of air operations for fixed and rotary wing aircraft within an air operations area. The AATC DAIR system supports the littoral mission when operating as a Helicopter Direction Center (HDC), or when functioning as an Air
Operations Coordination Center (AOCC) on amphibious class ships. The CATCC DAIR system supports the blue water mission on carriers as Carrier Control Approach (CCA).
The CATCC/AATC DAIR system processes radar, IFF, and GPS data in order to present air traffic controllers with aircraft identity, altitude and positional information on planned position indicator (PPI) displays. The system processes and automatically displays fused
RADAR, Joint Precision and Approach Landing System (JPALS) and Identification Friend or Foe (IFF/SIF) tracks. The processed track data is transmitted in a UDP Multicast message at approximately 125 KB/s over a Local Area Network (LAN) to 5-8 PPI consoles in
CATCC/AATCC respectively. CATCC/AATC DAIR enhances aircraft launch and recovery operations by displaying aircraft data, system list data, geographic points, situational awareness and map lines as well as passing aircraft information to the Advanced Combat
Direction System (ACDS) and the Precision Approach and Landing System (PALS). Using
1.00 UNCLASSIFIED 2
this visual information, the controller is able to coordinate the movement and recovery of air traffic while maintaining safe separation, the basic function of Air Traffic Control.
The project sponsor for AN/TPX-42A(V) system is Program Executive Officer, Tactical
Aircraft Programs (PMA213), 22289 Exploration Drive, Exploration V, Suite 401, Lexington
Park, MD 20653.
The In-Service Engineering Activity (ISEA) and Software Support Activity (SSA) for
AN/TPX-42A(V) systems is the Naval Air Warfare Center Aircraft Division (NAWCAD
4.11.7), Air Traffic Control and Landing Systems Division, 17454 Webster Field Road, Bldg
8131, St. Inigoes, MD 20684-0010.
1.2.2 AN/TPX-42A(V) (Recorder-Reproducer Replacement).
The WM3202A Wordsafe Maxima Recorder-Reproducer is obsolete, expensive and time consuming to repair. The Recorder-Reproducer is the top CATCC/AATC Readiness, Spare and Repair Parts Degrader and is impacting fleet readiness. Wordsafe Maxima tape deck unit failures are increasing with the NAVICP average demand rate at 5.48 per year. New parts are no longer available.
Section 3.4.7.1 of the NAVAIR 00-80T-114 NATOPS Air Traffic Control Manual requires a data and audio Recorder-Reproducer with time synchronization.
The ruggedized 19 inch rack mounted recorder-reproducer replacement will be capable of recording and playback of synchronized voice data, fused radar/IFF/GPS aircraft tracks, ships navigation data, and IRIG-B time source. The aircraft track data and ships navigation data is contained in a digital UDP Multicast message broadcast across a 100Base-T local area network at approximately 125 KB/s rate. The 24 channels of analog voice data is transmitted over 24 pairs of copper wire. The IRIG-B time signal is transmitted across 50 ohm coax cable.
1.3 Document Overview.
This document specifies the requirements for the replacement of the Wordsafe Maxima
Recorder-Reproducer. This document follows the format of the System / Subsystem
Specification (SSS) Data Item Description (DID), DI-IPSC-81431A, 10 Jan 2000.
