STATEMENT OF WORK

TASK ORDER 0002

MICROBE-DERIVED FUEL STOCK

DATED 06/11/2013

1.0 INTRODUCTION

The objective of this effort is to provide the BioEnergy and BioFabrication section of the Chemistry Division with the required research and development (R&D) in novel strategies to exploit microorganisms for the production of biofuel feedstocks.

The major tasks associated with this effort is determining the role of biochronicity on cellulose fermentation, developing reproducible method for validating biochronicity, and monitoring the transcription of circadian rhythm genes. The intent of this research is to develop second generation biofuels.

2.0 SCOPE

The goal of this effort is produce biofuel feedstock by increasing the metabolic efficiency of Neurospora crassa for the conversion of cellulose into ethanol.

3.0 TASK DESCRIPTION

3.1 The Contractor shall perform research on up to 12 bioreactor experiments to determine the effects of biochronicity of Neurospora crassa on the production of ethanol. This work will include effects such as nutrient load, trace nutrients, carbon source and environmental conditions.

3.2 Establish continuous cultures of Neurospora crassa and conduct chemical and genetic analysis of the organisms and the resultant eluents.

3.3 Elucidate the role circadian rhythms play in enhancing cellulase production, secretion and degradation activity by conducting genomic and proteomic analysis of Neurospora crassa with the goal of determining the cellular regulatory elements to cellulose-derived bioethanol. Collect experimental data for predictive mathematical models and identify key regulatory elements involved in the conversion of cellulose directly into ethanol.

4.0 PLACE OF PERFORMANCE

Primary place of performance shall be the Naval Research Laboratory.

N00173-13-R-RV11

5.0 MATERIALS

5.1 The Government estimates material for this task order to be $25,000 (unburdened). This estimate must be included in Section B of the offer. Other/additional ODC amounts proposed by an Offeror shall be included in said CLINs and explained in the narrative rationale provided by the Offeror.

6.0 TRAVEL

6.1 The estimated cost for travel provided in this procurement planning document includes travel to sites identified by our sponsors where technical exchanges will occur.

This travel is required for performance of the work under this contract. Typically, travel from NRL to the following locations, during performance of this effort includes the following:

Location Description Orlando, FL 2 person-trips, 3 days each San Francisco, CA 2 person-trips, 3 days each

This estimate must be included in Section B and the narrative rationale provided by the offeror.

7.0 ORDER TYPE

This task order is issued on the basis marked below:

Order Type X Cost Plus Fixed Fee Term Cost Plus Fixed Fee Completion

8.0 PERIOD OF PERFORMANCE

The term of this task order is twelve (12) months from date of award.
