QUESTION 14. Exterior wall detail 1/A4.1 does not indicate a vapor retarder at interior side of exterior wall. Specification Section 07 21 00 Thermal Insulation does not include an interior vapor retarder. Will there be a vapor retarder on exterior wall and what is the basis of design for the vapor retarder? Vapor retarder is written in narrative for the roof assembly detail 2/A4.1, however the vapor retarder type is not provided.
ANSWER 14. No vapor retarder is required for the exterior wall assembly. (See attachment “L15PS00180 Amendment 001 FDO Storage Specification 072600”)
QUESTION 15. The specified metal wall panels are not available in full length as shown on the elevations. Standard panel splice details will be required. Can you give us the panel splice spacing for the metal wall panels?
ANSWER 15. The type of panels specified can be installed with vertical expansion joints if necessary due to limited lengths. Overlapping the panels will not be satisfactory, and the manufacturer’s standard detail will be a means to resolve this, however, the gov't needs to assure that the locations of the vertical joints are placed appropriately and this can be resolved in the submittals process.
QUESTION 16. Section 072100 Thermal Insulation paragraph 3.3.B states we are to adhere insulation on foundation walls. Detail 3/A4.1 shows poly sheeting under slab and extended to top of slab. Typical details for foundation walls are a fluid applied dampproofing or self-adhering low temperature membrane. Both allow for better adhesion of the foundation insulation. Can one of these be utilized in lieu of the poly sheeting?
ANSWER 16. There are no foundation walls. Section 072100 Thermal Insulation paragraph 3.2.A requires adhering insulation to vertical slab surfaces using adhesive.
Section 072600 Vapor Retarders also contains provisions for adhesive. The slab vapor barrier shall be installed as shown.
QUESTION 17. The drawing shows the intermediate fence posts being driven 60" which has become pretty standard on this type of fence in our part of Alaska. The written spec only coverts posts set in concrete. Which method will be required for this project?
ANSWER 17. The line posts (intermediate posts) may be driven to 60" embedment with no concrete encasement.
QUESTION 18. The detail for the terminal and gate posts calls for a sonotube and three wraps of visqueen in each hole. This is a specification that one architect in Fairbanks came up with 25 years as a method to prevent frost heave. On past projects it has not been effective and add a lot of unnecessary cost in material and labor. We have found it to be much more effective to drill a
12"-16" diameter hole 54" deep, pour 36" of concrete in the bottom and backfill the rest of the hole with some of the excavated material. In winter the soil freezes first but the frost cannot lift the concrete footing, and by the time the frost gets to the concrete footing it cannot lift it because of the frozen soil above it. We have been using this method for setting posts for years and have found it to be best at preventing or dramatically slowing frost heave. I am requesting that you consider changing the detail. Again, it would cut costs and make a better product.
ANSWER 18. The method described is also acceptable.
