Ammunition Testing Criteria

All ammunition will be tested in accordance with the Statement of Work (SOW) on a Remington

Model 700 rifle, configured to USSS specifications. Testing will utilized an Accuracy

International AX-AICS stock with the 5, 8, and 10 round detachable box magazine.

All submitted ammunition will be inspected for compliance with the physical specifications SOW

Section 3.2, 3.3, 3.4, and 3.6. Ammunition that fails to meet these specifications will be given a

“Fail” rating and will not be considered further. The following table summarizes the specifications of the SOW sections referenced:

SOW Section Minimum Specification Maximum Specification

3.2 - Caliber See attached ANSI/SAAMI

Z299.4 Specifications Sheet

See attached ANSI/SAAMI Z299.4

Specifications Sheet

3.3 – Case Plain brass, with tolerances stated in attached ANSI/SAAMI Z299.4 specifications sheet, commercial headstamp

3.4 – Bullet Match grade, hollow point, with a boat tail

Ballistic Coefficient @ 3,000fps – not less than 0.560 (G1 function, Ingalls’ table)

Weight – 208 grains

Lead or similar core and gilding metal jacket (jacket should be closed at the base and have an open tip (hollow point).

“Tipping” of the hollow point to increase ballistic coefficient is acceptable)

Weight – 212 grains

*bullet weight should not vary more than 0.9 grains

3.6 – Overall

Length

3.280 inches 3.50 inches

*loaded cartridge must chamber in a

SAAMI test barrel

After a physical inspection of the ammunition, a function test will be completed to test Velocity

(SOW Section 3.7), Chamber Pressure (SOW Section 3.8), Accuracy (SOW Section 3.9), and

Bullet Push/Pull (SOW Section 4.0).

The following table summarized the minimum and maximum specifications for the referenced

SOW sections:

SOW Section Minimum Specification Maximum

Specification/Allowable

Variance

3.7 – Velocity Nominal Mean Velocity @

20 ft. from the muzzle =

2,875 ft per second (10 round sample, 26 in. barrel)

Nominal Mean Velocity @

20 ft. from the muzzle =

2,790 ft per second (10 round sample, 24 in. barrel)

+/- 50 feet per second

+/- 50 feet per second

**Standard deviation for a 10 round sample shall not exceed 15 feet per second

If the initial test of a particular lot of ammunition fails to meet the Velocity requirements stated in 3.7.1 and 3.7.2, the procedure of 3.7.1 will be repeated for up to five individual ten round samples (including the initial ten round sample). If two consecutive ten round samples do not meet the requirements of 3.7.1 and 3.7.2, the ammunition shall be rejected and no longer considered for award.

3.8 – Chamber Pressure Maximum Mean Chamber pressure shall not be greater than 64,000 pound per square inch (PSI). The maximum permissible individual pressure shall be 68,100 PSI

3.9 – Accuracy 3.9.1 Extreme spread shall not exceed 0.8 inches at 100-yards for a five round sample fired from a test barrel and action, held on a standard V-block and slide or machine rest.

3.9.3 Extreme spread shall

not exceed 6.0 inches at 600-yards for a five round sample fired from a test barrel and action, held on a standard V-block and slide or machine rest.

3.9.5 Extreme spread shall

not exceed 10.0 inches at

1000-yards for a five round sample fired from a test barrel and action, held on a standard

V-block and slide or machine rest.

If the initial test of a particular lot of ammunition fails to meet the accuracy requirements stated in 3.9.1, the procedure described in 3.9.1 may be repeated for up to five individual five round samples (including the initial five round sample). If two consecutive five round samples do not meet the requirements of 3.9.1, the ammunition shall be reject and no longer be considered for award.

in 3.9.3, the procedure described in 3.9.3 may be repeated for up to five individual five round samples (including the initial five round sample). If two consecutive five round samples do not meet the requirements of 3.9.3, the ammunition shall be reject and no longer be considered for award.

in 3.9.5, the procedure described in 3.9.5 may be repeated until two consecutive five round samples satisfactorily meet the requirement.

4.0 – Bullet Push/Pull 40 lbs +/- 10 lbs.

After the successful completion of the testing described above, the ammunition will undergo a

Function Test, in accordance with SOW 4.2. The following procedures will be followed:

The detachable box shall be loaded (5, 8, and 10 round magazine) with cartridges to magazine capacity, and the bolt shall be closed without chambering a round.

The bolt shall be opened, pulled all the way to the rear, and then pushed forward, feeding the cartridge into the chamber, and rotated closed. The cartridge shall be fired. This procedure shall be repeated until the magazine is empty and chamber is empty.

The procedure described above shall be repeated 10 times in one rifle.

If one cartridge fails to feed, chamber, fire, extract, eject, or leaves a bullet in the bore, the test procedure shall be repeated 40 times. If a failure occurs during the second test, the ammunition shall be rejected and no longer considered for award.
