F-16 HANGAR DOOR OPERATION GUIDELINE FOR CONTRACTORS

(To Prevent Freezing Water Lines in the Hangar Bays)

Unless provisions are made to create a heated enclosure for hangar bays while hangar doors are open when ambie temperature is below 25º F the following guidelines shall be followed:

Outside Air Temperature Operational Guideline

25º F and Above No operational constraints.

10º F to 24º F Doors shall be open no longer than 15 minutes and doors shall be closed for 30 min. before reopening.

0º F to 9º F Doors shall be open no longer than 15 minutes and doors shall be closed for 40 min. before reopening.

-10º F to -1º F Doors shall be open no longer than 15 minutes and doors shall be closed for 1 hour before reopening.

Above -15º F to -11º F Doors shall be open no longer than 15 minutes and doors shall be closed for 1 1/2 hours before reopening.

-15º F Doors shall be open no longer than 15 minutes and doors shall be closed for 2 hours before reopening.

Below -15º F Doors shall be open no longer than 15 minutes and doors shall be closed for 2 hours minimum before reopening.

Temperature of smallest unprotected domestic water line in area of greatest risk shall be monitored to ensure the hangar door is being closed long enough to prevent water in pipe from becoming fully frozen* during the periods the hangar door is open.

*Note: An accurate temperature probe strapped to the exterior of the pipe and covered with a small piece of insulation will provide a good indication of the temperature of the water within the pipe. An indication that the water in a small pipe has become fully frozen is when that temperature drops below 32º F.
