Text version

EXISTING CONDITIONS

Building 1335 has four aircraft bays. Each bay has two opposing tilt-up doors, each equipped with a single active and a single passive counterweight. Each active counterweight is equipped with a 3 horsepower motor. Both doors for each bay are powered from a single circuit breaker in the existing motor control center.

SCOPE OF WORK

This project will remove and rebuild the bay doors. The two counterweight systems will be removed and replaced with a single active counterweight. The existing 3 horsepower motor will be removed and replaced with a motor of the same size. As the motor size isn’t changing, the capacity of the motor control panel is not affected.

There is currently one interior horn for each door to indicate door operation. These will be removed and replaced. In addition, two new horn/strobes will be added, one on each side of each door. All of the horns and strobes associated with door operation will be provided as part of the door assembly and be controlled by the door control panel.

It was noted that ETL 98-8 requires that the hangar doors be powered separately from the rest of the building. The Air Force has provided direction that this is not an applicable requirement for this project.

Several fire alarm pull stations will need to be relocated to accommodate the new enclosures.

The National Electric Code (NEC) Chapter 513 classifies all spaces in the hangar that are within five feet of the parked aircraft and to a height of five feet above the wing as Class 1 Division 2. The aircraft currently have between 6 and 7 feet between their wingtips and the walls. This applies only to the parked location of the aircraft. None of the electrical work as part of this project is anticipated to project into this classified area.
