SUPPLEMENTAL MECHANICAL GUIDE SPECIFICATIONS FOR EIELSON AFB, AK
Electrical support equipment: Electrical disconnects for HVAC equipment shall be installed where readily accessible from floor level.
Mechanical Calculations: Include a 20% safety factor for all load / flow calculations.
Steam, Condensate, Hydronic Isolation Valves: Isolation valves shall be installed within 4 feet of equipment that is to be isolated.
Manually Operable Valves: If distance from floor to center of valve is more than 7 feet the valve shall be equipped with a chain drive.
Unit Heaters: Unit heaters shall be equipped with fan guards.
Steam and Condensate Piping:
(Do not use any products containing bronze, brass or copper that could come in contact with steam or condensate.)
MEDIUM AND HIGH PRESSURE STEAM PIPING (125 PSIG MAXIMUM)
A. Steel Pipe: ASTM A53, Schedule 80, black.
1. Fittings: ASTM A234 forged steel welding type, Class 300.
2. Joints: ASME B31.9 welded.
LOW PRESSURE STEAM PIPING (15 PSIG MAXIMUM), ABOVE GRADE
A. Steel Pipe: ASTM A53, Schedule 40, black.
1. Fittings: ASTM B16.3, malleable iron Class 125 or ASTM A234, forged steel welding type.
2. Joints: Flanged or ASME B31.9 welded.
STEAM CONDENSATE PIPING
A. Steel Pipe: ASTM A53, Schedule 80, black.
1. Fittings: ASTM B16.3, malleable iron Class 250-300 or ASTM A234, forged steel Class 250-300.
2. Joints: Threaded or ASME B31.9 welded.
UNIONS, FLANGES, AND COUPLINGS
A. Flanges:
1. Forged steel, slip-on.
2. Gaskets: Spiral wound metallic.

1. Isolation valves (Gate Valves): Threaded, Class 800, OS&Y, full port, bolted bonnet, forged steel body, bonnet and stem, hard faced solid wedge steel disc, 13% Cr. Trim.
Teflon or graphite impregnated fiber packing.
2. Globe valves: Threaded ends, Class 800, round bolted bonnet, renewable seat and disc, hard-faced disc with the hard faced seat, forged A105 body and 316 steel trim. Teflon or graphite impregnated fiber packing.
3. Check valves installed in horizontal lines and vertical lines with upward flow: Threaded, Class 700 swing check, malleable iron body and cap, 13% Cr. or stainless steel trim.
Cover that allows for removal of entire disc assembly through top of valve body. Crane 346-1/2 or equal.
B. Valves larger than 2 inches:
1. Isolation valves: Flanged ends, Class 250-300, OS&Y, full port, bolted bonnet, solid wedge iron disc gate valve, iron body and all iron trim. Teflon or graphite impregnated fiber packing. Nibco F-617-ON or equal.
2. Globe valves: Flanged ends, Class 250-300, OS&Y, bolted bonnet, renewable seat and disc, iron disc, iron body and all iron trim. Teflon or graphite impregnated fiber packing.
Nibco F-718-N or equal.
3. Check valves installed in horizontal lines and vertical lines with upward flow: Flanged ends, Class 250-300, renewable seat and disc, iron disc, bolted bonnet, iron body and all iron trim. Swing check design with bolted cap that allows for removal of entire disc assembly through top of valve body. Nibco F-918-N or equal.
C. Condensate.
1. All valves and fittings for condensate shall be Class 250-300#.
HIGH PRESSURE STEAM VALVES
A. Valves 2 inches and smaller:
1. Isolation valves (Gate Valves): Threaded, Class 800, OS&Y, full port, bolted bonnet, forged steel body, bonnet and stem, hard faced solid wedge steel disc, 13% Cr. Trim.
Teflon or graphite impregnated fiber packing.
2. Globe valves: Threaded, Class 800, OS&Y, bolted bonnet, forged steel body, bonnet, stem, 13% Cr. trim. Teflon or graphite impregnated fiber packing.
3. Check valves installed in horizontal lines and vertical lines with upward flow: Threaded, Class 700 swing check, malleable iron body and cap, 13% Cr. or stainless steel trim.
Cover that allows for removal of entire disc assembly through top of valve body. Crane 346-1/2 or equal.
B. Valves larger than 2 inches:
1. Gate Valves: Flanged ends, ASME Class 300. OS&Y, bolted bonnet, flexible wedge disc, cast steel body, bonnet, stainless steel trim. Teflon or graphite impregnated fiber packing. Isolation valves shall be full port. Stockham J1010B8F or equal.

2. Globe valves: Flanged ends, ASME Class 300. OS&Y, bolted bonnet, cast steel body, bonnet, stainless steel trim, disc-13% Cr. overlay. Teflon or graphite impregnated fiber packing. Crane 151-XU, Stockham or equal.
Steam and Steam Condensate Specialties:
STRAINERS
A. Acceptable Manufacturers: Spirax Sarco, Armstrong, Mueller or approved. Substitutions: Under provisions of Division 1.
B. Steel or iron systems: Steel or cast iron body with 316L or 304 stainless steel screen, off-center blow down (where size permits), gasketed cap. Sarco 34/CI-125/AF-250, Armstrong, or equal.
C. Strainers on high pressure steam system shall have steel bodies.
D. Bronze, brass, or copper parts and appurtenances shall not be allowed on strainers on steam and condensate systems.
E. Pressure rating to match system rating.
F. Unless otherwise indicated provide with the following screen sizes:
1. Steam and hydronic systems: 3 inches and smaller, 20 mesh. 4 inches and larger, 1/8 inch perforations.
FLOAT AND THERMOSTATIC TRAPS
A. Manufacturers:
1. Spirax Sarco or approved equal.
2. Substitutions: Under provisions of Division 1.
B. Thermodynamic Steam Traps: All stainless steel construction, 3.5 psi minimum operating pressure. Rated to 600 psi, 800 degrees F. Complete with integral inlet strainer and blowdown valve, Sarco TD-S-52 or equal. At Contractor’s option, trap may be less strainer and blowdown valve provided separate inlet strainer and blowdown valve is provided upstream.
C. Low pressure float and thermostatic traps: Low Pressure: Iron body with all stainless steel internal components. Mechanical ball float type with thermostatic air vent. Pressure rating suitable for application. Sarco FT or FTB series or equal.
D. High pressure float and thermostatic traps: Cast steel body with all stainless steel internal components. Mechanical ball float type with thermostatic air vent. Pressure rating suitable for application. Sarco FT or FTB series or equal.
FLASH TANKS

A. Closed type, tested and stamped in accordance with ASME SEC 8-D, welded steel construction, cleaned, prime coated, and supplied with steel support legs.
B. Working Pressure: 125 psig.
C. Construct with nozzles and tappings for installation of accessories and piping connections.
D. Size and Capacity: See Drawings.

NON-ELECTRIC CONDENSATE RETURN UNITS
Spirax Sarco.
Substitutions: Under provisions of Section 01600.
B. Condensate Return Units: Consist of receiver, inlet strainer, float, and accessories.
C. Condensate Receiver: Cast iron, equipped with deluxe water level gauge, dial thermometer, pressure gauges on pump discharge.
D. Inlet Strainer: Cast iron, with vertical self-cleaning stainless steel screen and large dirt pocket, mounted on receiver. Screen shall be easily removable for cleaning.
E. Performance: (Note to AE: size per project requirements) .
PRESSURE REDUCING VALVES
Spirax Sarco, Armstrong, Watson McDaniel.
B. Pressure Reducing Station Service: Cast iron body, stainless steel internals, pilot operated, remote sensing, 250 psi rated. Sarco 25P or equal. (Note to AE: this is the only equipment for which cast iron is allowed on high pressure side of steam)
C. Condensate Receiver Steam Service: Duct iron body, stainless steel internals, 275 psi rated.
Sarco BRV2 or equal; or Ductile iron body, stainless steel internals, 150 psi rated Sarco BRV71/73; depending on capacity required.
STEAM SAFETY VALVES
Spirax Sarco, Consolidated Valves,.
B. Class 250, cast iron body, stainless trim, fully enclosed spring, adjustable pressure range, and positive shut off. ASME labeled. Factory set valve to relieve at 10 psi above operating pressure.

C. Provide pressure relief valve with relieving capacity, at setpoint, equal to combined capacity of pressure reducing valves operating at pressure drop indicated.
D. Accessories: Drip pan elbow.
MOISTURE SEPARATOR
A. ASME Code stamped for 300 psig steam service.
B. Steel Construction, internal baffle, inline piping. Provide with float and thermostatic trap and flash tank to condensate receiver. Sarco S4A or equal.
VACUUM BREAKERS
A. All stainless steel components, 175 psi rated. Sarco VB21 or equal.
INSTALLATION (Steam and Steam Condensate Specialties)
A. Install specialties in accordance with manufacturer's instructions.
B. Steam Traps:
1. Provide minimum 3/4 inch size on steam mains and branches.
2. Install with union or flanged connections at both ends.
3. Provide gate valve and strainer at inlet; and test tee (for blow-by/trap inspection), check valve and gate valve at discharge.
4. Provide minimum 10 inch long, line size dirt pocket between apparatus and trap.
C. Provide pressure reducing stations with pressure reducing valve, valved bypass, strainer and pressure gauge on upstream side, relief valve and pressure gauge on downstream side of pressure reducing valve.
D. Pressure reducing station shall be two stages. Locate pilot operator control minimum 6 feet downstream of valve.
E. Rate safety valves for pressure upstream of pressure reducing station, for full operating capacity.
Set relief at maximum 20 percent above reduced pressure.
F. Terminate relief valves to outdoors.
G. Provide eccentric reducer or increaser as required in steam piping to avoid accumulation of condensate in piping.
H. Install steam line strainers in horizontal position.
