STATEMENT OF WORK
PROJECT TITLE: Repair Hangar Doors & Insulation, Hanger 61
PROJECT NUMBER: TYMX061005
WORK ORDER NUMBER: 12694
PROJECT LOCATION: JBSA-Randolph, Hanger 61
The Government shall be represented by the following individuals:
Contract Specialist: Christa Pritchett 502CONS/JBKCA (210) 652-7627
Project Manager: Sylvia Rodriguez 502CES/CEPM (210) 652-1811
Background
Hangar 61 (H61) is a facility where paint is stripped off of an aircraft before it is taken to another Hangar to be repainted. Approximately 20 years ago (approx. 1997), sprayed-on insulation was applied to the inside of H61. At that time, the original method of removing paint off of an aircraft involved the use of a product that contained chromium, and it circulated freely throughout H61.
Over the years, this chromium product has absorbed into the sprayed-on insulation. The insulation is now crumbling, is friable, and is falling onto the hangar floor. Employees currently wear filter type masks and use a HEPA vacuum to clean any loose insulation off of the floor. The paint removal technology has improved and a new method of paint stripping is being used. It currently takes approximately 2 ½ - 3 month to process an aircraft.
