About this file
This is a Scope of Work document issued by the West Virginia Army National Guard for climbing tower repair and maintenance at Camp Dawson in Kingwood, West Virginia. The project scope involves comprehensive maintenance of an approximately 50-foot by 22-foot by 56-foot tall climbing tower with an estimated surface area of 13,670 square feet. Work includes filling all cavities with structural epoxy suitable for wood applications, applying wood protective coating to all surfaces including walls, stairs, platforms, and railings, applying textured anti-slip paint to stair treads and the upper platform edge, and reapplying high-visibility yellow safety markings on the top platform. The tower is constructed of a mixture of pressure-treated and glulam lumber. Materials and colors require WVARNG approval prior to installation. The contractor must provide a one-year warranty on all parts, labor, and materials and submit as-built drawings and field notes within 30 days of final government acceptance. All contractor and subcontractor employees require background checks and personal identity verification to access the DoD installation, with two business days' notice required for site access and deliveries. The WVARNG will provide a laydown area and job trailer space but electric and water service are not guaranteed. The recommended wood preservative is Total Wood Preservative (TWP 100 series) or equivalent, with the contractor bearing responsibility for Volatile Organic Compound compliance based on the preservative selected and location of use.

Division 6 – Wood and Plastics
06900 Wood and Plastic Restoration and Cleaning
Structural epoxy applicable to wood surfaces is to be used to fill all cavities present on the climbing tower. All steps outlined by the manufacturer for preparation and application of the epoxy are to be followed. Example of applicable wood epoxy: Abatron WoodEpox.
Division 9 - Finishes
09050 Basic Materials and Methods
The climbing tower is approximately 50` x 22` x 56`, with an estimated surface area of 13,670 sq ft.
These measurements are purely approximations; contractor is responsible for accurate measures of area to be coated before approval and start of project. The tower is comprised of a mixture of pressure treated and glulam lumber. The recommended preservative is “Total Wood Preservative (TWP 100 series)” however, a brand of equal or greater value can be used. Contractor will be responsible for Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) regulation compliance with the location of use dependent on the type of wood preservative used. The surfaces to be treated must be prepped before any preservative is applied, at a minimum of what is recommended by the chemical manufacturer. All wood surfaces must be coated for the preservation of the tower. Post wood preservative treatment, a textured paint needs to be applied to the treads of the stairs and the outer edge of the top platform. The textured paint must provide anti-slip properties under normal and wet conditions. In addition, a high visibility yellow paint must be used to reapply the yellow markings present on the top platform to meet tower safety requirements.
09900 Paints and Coatings
The color of the wood preservative is preferred clear, particularly on the surfaces of the supporting poles. However, for the main body of the tower a natural color matching the current shade is acceptable. The color of the textured paint can match the existing paint or be of a neutral color. The paint color for the safety markings must be a high visibility yellow or shade of yellow that is bright and distinguishable from the tower.
