3 BASIC SYSTEM INFORMATION

SAL R1a is an electronic Speed and Distance Measuring Device, i.e. a speed-log, designed for measuring longitudinal speed and distance through water on ships of all kinds and sizes. The speed-log works in principle like two small, synchronized echo sounders built together, comparing echoes from water particles close to the hull. The measuring is based on the so-called Correlation Principle (described below), which entails that it is very dependable and reliable in all kinds of waters. The SAL R1a has no moving parts and no parts sticking out below the hull of the ship.

3.1 Parts

The basic concept of a SAL R1a includes following parts:

1. The Bottom Part comprising the Mounting Set Single Bottom Sea Valve (MSSBSV) and the Transducer Unit (TRU).

The MSSBSV is a watertight holder for the TRU through the ship’s hull, which also makes it possible to inspect and change the TRU without dry-docking.

The Transducer Unit (TRU) contains the two transmitting/receiving elements (crystals) and is connected to the Electronic unit (ELC) by a cable of fixed length of 30 metre.

2. The Electronic Cabinet (ELC) The ELC contains the electronic calculating units, also called the Water Track Unit (WTU) and the Power Supply Unit (PSU). The ELC is normally placed close to (less than 30 cable meters) from the Bottom Part. Up to 10 speed data receivers can be connected directly to the ELC.

3. The SD4- display One STW (WT speed) and distance display (Speed Log Master Display) of SD4-3 type is normally placed on the ship’s bridge. Besides digital displaying of speed and distance through water the SD4-3 is also used as a remote interface unit to the WTU in the ELC.

Following additional and/or alternative units to the SAL R1a concept are optionally obtainable:

1. Alternative Bottom Parts For ships where the bottom part must be installed through a double bottom a Mounting Set Double Bottom Sea Valve (MSDBSV) is needed For smaller ships or for very narrow installation the Mounting Set Single bottom (MSSB), without a sea valve, is an alternative to the MSSBSV.

Note: Dry-docking needed when change or inspection of the TRU..

2. Alternative Transducer cable length TRU with 40 m fixed length. Never cut or alter the cable!

3. Repeater displays Additional SD4 displays can be installed on the bridge, bridge wings, engine control room, as appropriate.

Doc ID: 703821B7, SAL R1a Section A General.doc 13 (17)

Analogue speed indicator SIA2-8. A pointer on a circular scale presents the speed.

Extension box When the ELC is installed far away from the bridge, e.g. the forepeak, and/or when more than 10 repeaters and other speed data receivers are needed, it is recommended to install a NMEA 1to4 Buffer, and or a NMEA N2P Converter unit. Those can be located on or near to the bridge. Only one cable is then needed from ELC to the NMEA Units. See Technical Specification and NMEA Units Installation Guide for further information.

3.2 Functional description

The Transducer Unit (TRU) sends simultaneously two short, parallel sound pulses into the water from two fore and aft oriented crystals. The direction of the pulses is perpendicular to the ships hull. After each transmission, (see fig1) the TRU first waits (echo time) and then receives the echoes from its own transmissions (integration time). This time cycle and the power of the pulses are adapted to reflection from particles in a small volume of water approx. 130 mm from each crystal.

S1 S2

Water flow direction

HullHull

1/2 echo time

Integration time

Fig 1.

So each short pulse creates an echo, or rather a reflected sound-energy, which is unique for each reflected volume of water. That very volume of water will therefore reflect the same energy, if hit again by a new pulse from the other crystal. The change of energy of the echoes, received during a fixed time, creates two more or less similar curve-patterns from the two crystals, but separated in time.

(t0)

S1

S2

Using Correlation technique the time delay (t0) between these two similar patterns can be calculated. The time delay corresponds to the time the ship has used to move the

Doc ID: 703821B7, SAL R1a Section A General.doc 16 (17) distance between the two crystals. That distance is known and the ship’s speed can easily be calculated.

3.3 Boundary Layer

The water close to the ship is dragged by the hull surface when the ship moves through the water. This layer of water with a lower relative speed is called the boundary layer. The thickness of the boundary layer will change due to surface and shape of the hull, speed and trim of the ship and depth of the water. Like all water related speed-logs SAL R1a measures the speed close to the hull. Therefore it may measure a too low speed. Calibrating each individual speed-log in all appropriate speeds must be done to compensate this physical effect. The SAL R1a can also be calibrated for different loads and ballasts of the ship.

3.4 Adverse conditions

It is important to remember that what the R1a measures is actually the speed of a discrete number of reflectors moving in a small water volume under the hull. In order to interpret the echoed signal it is anticipated that the particles are moving parallel to the vessel axis. If the transducer has been installed at a non-preference location of the hull the water flow might be turbulent at the site of the transducer. Under these conditions there is no guarantee for the log to work. See section on installation of bottom parts for correct transducer installation.

In the low speed range, (+/-2 knot) the distance travelled per time interval is low yielding limited information to the correlation function. This influences accuracy and may impose lost speed track conditions.

The log may encounter problems to measure when the ship moves in water with high particle content. This depends on that many particles give "foggy" reflections, which makes it difficult to see the same pattern at the true delay.

3.5 Operation modes

At power on the WTU runs a self-test program. If correct it starts to execute in normal operation.

Five green LED’s on the WTU (on the ELC front panel of SAL R1a) gives status information of

• 12VDC

• Correlation quality

• Measuring mode (clear water-ON, dirty water-OFF)

• Transmission to the two crystals in the TRU

The SAL R1a has three processes running in parallel:

• Measurement process

• Menu system process

• Evaluation (of measurement data) process.

During the measurement process the WTU first works in:

• Seek Zero speed mode (SZ)

• Seek Low speed mode (SL) for speeds below 4 knots

• Seek High speed mode (SH) for speed above 2 knots

Doc ID: 703821B7, SAL R1a Section A General.doc 17 (17)

The seek modes are repeated until a valid speed is found. Then the WTU enters either:

• Locked Low speed mode (LL) for speeds below 2,5 knots or

• Locked High speed mode (LH) for speeds above 2 knots

Then evaluation process calculates the speed and distance continuously and transforms it to different kinds of transmitted speed and distance data as described below.

It is possible to enter the menu system (normally by a SD4-display) without stopping the log from measuring. The different operating modes can be followed and speed calibration can be performed in same menu system. Furthermore TRU tests and simulated speed can be performed. For further information of the menu system See 4 User Guide, Setting/Calibration for detailed instruction.

3.6 Data transmission / reception

Speed and distance data are sent from the Water Track Unit (WTU) as serial IEC 61162-1(NMEA)-messages on standard RS 485 output. Up to 10 NMEA receiving units, e.g. SD4-3, radars, gyros etc, can be connected. Four SD4- displays can be powered directly from the ELC.

IEC61162 (NMEA)-messages are also available through RS232 for data logging, software updates and other remote interfacing by PC.

Speed information is also presented as 200p/NM (two contact closure relays) and one 0,1 v/knots analogue output.

There is also one power failure alarm relay output.

1.4 SD4-3 in Menu Mode

The Menu Mode has three “Local Menus” and one “Remote Device menu” on the first set-up level:

• SD4-3 LOCAL. This is the start menu when entering the Menu Mode. If one or more other displays are remotely dimmed from the display, this menu shows a second text line and can easily be used to turn the remote dimming function

ON/OFF.

• LP0 PROPERTIES. This menu contains sub menus for local setting up of the display. Warning: Do not turn write access ON without special training.

• LS0 REMOTE SETUP. This menu contains sub menus for setting up when the display is used as a Speed log Master Display /Remote Device for other units and displays.

Warning: Do not turn write access ON without special training

• R0 REMOTE DEV. On a designated Speed Log Master Display this menu provides access to a remote device, e.g. SAL R1a/ WTU menu structure.

Note! Verify the setting in menu LS7.

1.5 Write and read only access

Default for sub menus when entering the menu system is reading access only, e.g. the Mode window shows WRITE ACCESS OFF.

When changing the write access to ON (“Plus button” confirmed by “Enter”), then sub menus are accessible for changes. Be careful to change intended parameters only. When leaving sub menus the write access is automatically set to OFF.

1.6 Menu functions

The complete list for fast indexing of the Menu System, available for the daily user, is included in Section C Installation under headline “Menu function summary” for SD4 displays and for SAL R1a /WTU under headline “2. Setting up Guide”.

A Menu Structure chart for the SD4-3/WTU is found under Section E Appendix.

Parameters, which can be changed during the operation of the SAL R1a speed log, are described here below.

Special menus for testing can be found under Trouble shooting.

1.7 Serial Remote Dimming functions

When serial remote dimming function is installed and initiated, each SD4 display can be dimmed individually, but it is also possible to dim four different displays remotely from one display. This remote dimming function can be turned on/off in the first menu when entering the Menu mode.

Set-up of the Remote Dimming function is described in the Installation Guide.

If separate external dimming buttons have been connected they are working in parallel with those of the display they are connected to.

1.8 Normal operation read-outs

The SAL R1a in normal operation calculates the speed from the sensor signals (see Basic System Information). It is possible to follow how the WTU is working by going in-to the R0 REMOTE DEV menu. Then go down one menu level (Enter) and wait for the display to synchronise with the remote device(s). Choose R1a / WTU (Enter) and the Normal operation menu will be displayed. It uses following field descriptors, which are described in the table below. If no speed is found the log enters search mode where ±XX.XX and S=DDD share the same position.

Descriptor Explanation MM Working mode

SZ= Seek Zero speed SL= Seek Low speed LL=Locked Low speed SH=Seek High speed LH=Locked High speed

The working modes (MM) are:

Seek zero speed mode

In "Seek-zero-Speed-mode" the log calculates a special correlation function to estimate the speed range and detect zero speed condition.

During zero speed search the following display information is shown;

If zero speed is detected (locked) the following display information is shown:

Seek low speed mode

In "Seek-low-speed-mode" the log seeks for speed in the lower speed range. It calculates the correlation function corresponding to a number of discrete speeds. The values for correlation coefficient (C) and signal quality (S) are presented:

Locked low speed mode

In "Locked-Low-Speed-mode" the log calculates the correlation function corresponding to a number of discrete speeds. Interpolation is used to give better speed resolution. The display presents speed information in the following format:

Seek high speed mode

In "Seek-high-speed-mode" the log searches for speed in the higher speed range. It calculates the correlation function corresponding to a number of discrete speeds. The values for correlation coefficient (C) and signal quality (S) is presented:

Locked high speed mode

In "locked-high-speed-mode" the log has locked in on the speed and uses a feedback algorithm to adjust sampling to track the speed. The speed is then presented in the following format:

Leave the WTU menu and the Menu mode and return to the normal Trip/Total mode by pressing ESC three times.

1.9 Calibrations

The SAL R1a has two different methods for calibrating the speed.

The SAL R1a also has a function for compensating small differences in characteristics of individual transducers. This TRU calibration is a fixed compensation factor, TC. The TC factor is marked on the transducer body and on the transducer cable termination end. This factor has to be set at commissioning and before any calibration methods are chosen.

If changing the transducer this factor has to be set according to the TC factor of the new transducer.

• Draught calibration – a single point calibration factor compensating differences in indicated speed, due to load and trim of the ship. Three different preset draught conditions can be programmed. They are named: FULL LOAD, BALLAST 1 and

BALLAST 2.

• Speed depending calibration - multiple point calibration factors compensating differences in indicated speed over the whole speed range. Factors can be preset for up to ten different speeds. Speeds between the calibrated points are interpolated automatically.

Note: The minimum necessary calibrations to be set are the TRU-calibration plus at least one of the draught calibrations. If so, after setting the TRU-calibration, choose e.g. FULL LOAD and compensate for the normal cruising speed used at normal load conditions (se below)

Draught Calibration and Speed Depending Calibration shall normally not be used at the same time.

1.9.1 TRU Calibration

This type of calibration is compensating small differences in characteristics of individual transducers. The transducer has been independently calibrated in factory and its compensator factor must be programmed into the speed log it is connected to. The factor is engraved on the transducer housing as TC±XXX. It is also labelled at the termination

SHC S=DDD ±YY.YY

FC=DDD ZZZZ:TTTT

LHC ±XX.XX ±YY.YY

Doc ID: 703822A6, SAL R1a Section B User Manual.doc 9 (21) end of the TRU-cable core No. 1. Example: TC+123 means calibration factor +1,23% and TC-101 means calibration factor –1,01%.

Note: The TC value shall be set before any other calibration is performed.

Procedure:

Go in to the Menu mode; step to R0 REMOTE DEV and then down to R1a/WTU sub menu C0. Choose WRITE ACCESS ON (+) and proceed down to menu C4.

Change the value by using the +/- buttons and then save the value by pressing Enter.

To leave this menu, press Menu and Enter simultaneously two times.

1.9.2 Draught calibration (Single point calibration)

This type of calibration is meant for merchant vessels where the water flow around the hull is changing due to different draughts and trims. Three calibrations can be performed for cruising speeds relevant to each of three decided draught/load conditions (FULL LOAD or BALLAST 1 or BALLAST 2). These calibrations are compensating with the same calibration percentage, respectively, over the whole speed register.

Changing between the three draught/load calibration types can then be done later in menu C1 by pressing plus (+) or minus (-) without changing the write access in menu C0.

However the change must be saved by pressing the ENTER button.

Before the calibration runs, make sure:

• that correct TC factor is set (see above)

• that the desired draught condition is chosen and set to 0% (Menus C1 /C2)

• the Multi Point Calibration is DISABLED (Menu C3)

The system is calibrated by sailing a true, known distance in calm waters. To eliminate variations caused by tide, current and wind, the ship should run the same route in both directions. For each separate run, carefully observe beginning and end of the true sailed distance and corresponding measured distance on log display. Then, for each speed, do following calculation to find the calibration factor CF:

CF=[(expected dist.1 + expected dist.2 ) / (measured dist.1 + measured dist.2)]

Normally the true distance is based on optical observations, but it is also possible to use other reference systems like DGPS or similar. If the calibration factor is based on a very long (several hours or days) comparison with GPS observations, make sure that it has not been affected by wind and current.

C4 TRU CALIBRAT.

MARKING: TC±000

Doc ID: 703822A6, SAL R1a Section B User Manual.doc 10 (21)

Use the menu system to enter the calibration factor in menu C2. Note that the calibration factor shall be expressed in percentage. A calculated value of e.g. 1.234 shall be entered as 23.40%.

Procedure: (see above for how to move in the menu system)

1. Go in to the Menu System, step to R0 REMOTE DEV and press Enter.

2. Go to R1a/WTU sub menu C0

3. Choose WRITE ACCESS ON (+)

4. Move down to menu C1 and check that desired alternative is chosen (see above)

5. Move to C2 and press Enter

6. Use + and – to change to calculated value from the calibration runs (e.g. 23.40%)

7. Save by pressing enter

8. To leave this menu, press Menu and Enter simultaneously two times.

9. Leave the WTU menu and the Menu mode and return to the normal Trip/Total mode by pressing ESC three times

Repeat the procedure (2-6) for each draught condition if desired.

1.9.3 Speed Depending Calibration (Multiple Point Calibration) This type of calibration is meant for vessels needing varying speed compensation in the whole speed register. Up to ten different speeds can be calibrated for, spread to speeds both ahead and astern. Speeds between the calibration points are interpolated automatically, except the area nearest zero, which uses its nearest calibration factor down

(up) to speed zero.

The Multiple Point Calibration can be ENABLED and DISABLED in menu C3 without changing the write access rights in Menu C0. However the change must be stored by pressing the ENTER button.

Make the calibration runs and calculations as described above for Single Point Calibration, but now repeat the procedure for each speed desired.

Before the calibration runs, make sure

• that correct TC factor is set (see above)

• that the chosen draught condition (e.g. BALLAST 1) is set to 0% (Menus C1 and

C2)

• that the Multi Point Calibration is DISABLED (Menu C3)

2 SETTING UP GUIDE

The SAL R1a Setting Up Procedure includes all steps after the Mechanical and Electrical Installations have been performed and up to the calibration of the speed log. (For calibration see User Guide.) The Setting Up Guide is limited to short instructions and we therefore recommend to using it as a check list. For errors or disruptions during the setting up procedure, please refer to Trouble Shooting Guide.

Each electrical installation is instructed to be completed by the Pre Set up Procedure. We recommend to double check these points before supplying power to the unit:

• Remove any possible particles from the cabinet(s)

• Carry out a visual inspection of the installed components and cables referring to the layouts of the unit and to the interconnection drawings

• Check that cable terminations have a firm grip of the cable wires

• Check that cable glands have a firm grip around the cables

• Check that the Transducer cable shield is firmly grounded in the cable gland of the ELC.

• Check for proper cable bends to assure a proper amount of slack

• Check that ground connections are duly tightened.

• Carefully check the main power voltage and the integrity of the fuses

Also check that the transducer is correctly installed down in working position and longitudinally aligned.

Set the SAL R1a Speed log to power.

Doc ID: 703822A6, SAL R1a Section B User Manual.doc 15 (21)

When SAL R1a is set to power the WTU runs a short Self Test Program and then proceeds in normal operation.

After setting the SAL R1a speed log to power, follow the procedure below and act accordingly. If a fault occurs or is detected, use the Trouble Shooting Guide to analyse and eliminate the reason.

• Check that the four LED indicators on the ELC front panel (upper right corner) function normally, i.e. TR1 and TR2 shall be lit showing that the transmitter of the WTU is working. CLEAR WATER and CORR OK may be lit depending on water and speed conditions at present. CLEAR WATER is lit when the signal conditions from the transducer are good or better. CORR OK is lit when the correlation coefficient is good or better.

NOTE: It is normal that the CLEAR WATER and CORR OK LED’s can be off when the ship is in harbour, in dirty and shallow water or when manoeuvring.

• Use the Speed Log Master Display, SD4-3 to communicate with the WTU by going into the R0 REMOTE DEV menu. (see User Guide)

• Check that the WTU is working in a operating mode relevant to present water and speed conditions

• Go to Menu T0

• Change to WRITE ACCESS ON

• Move down to T1 and use default speed 8 knots or use speed as desired

NOTE: Now the SAL R1a will stop measuring ship’s speed and instead it is showing the simulated speed on all users connected.

• Check that all connected users show the same speed

• Change to and check at least two more speeds within the ship’s speed range, including one speed astern (minus)

• Move to TA menu and simulate Log Failure Alarm by pressing -(minus)

• Check that connected alarm is activated (if any)

• Leave the T menu by pressing MENU and ENTER simultaneously two times.

• Check that simulated speed is replaced by actual speed

• Check that TC factor (in Menu C4) is set according to calibration factor as marked on TRU cable core No.1. (See User Guide)
