Controlled In-Situ Chemical Oxidation & Reduction Technology
DeepEarth Technologies, Inc.:
DeepEarth Technologies, Inc. (DTI) is an environmental restoration company specializing in providing Cool-Ox® technology for cleaning up contaminated soils and groundwater. Cool-Ox® has been awarded ten (10) patents in the US, Canada, Europe and Australia.
The Cool-Ox® process is designed to eliminate a wide variety of contaminants including petroleum hydrocarbons, chlorinated organics (PCP, PCB, DDT, Dioxins), nitrate explosives (TNT, DNT) and brine. It is especially effective at destroying vapor phase contaminants (HC-VOC, CVOC) impacting various types of soils including clay.
While Cool-Ox® is tough on contaminants, it is gentle on vegetation. Because the mechanisms are different, Cool-Ox® can eliminate pollutants while actually promoting plant growth.
DTI is the industry specialist in providing Turnkey Services. Specialty equipment, proven technology and personnel know-how underpin our success. Depending on the site specifics, DTI utilizes numerous application methods to ensure Cool-Ox® delivery and communication with contaminants. These methods include Direct Push Technology (DPT), Hydro-Dart™ (hand lance), well injections, Pit-Stop™ overspray and soil blending. DTI’s field personnel are continually developing new down-hole tooling designs and working with the latest equipment available to ensure each application is as successful as possible no matter the soil type, depth or type of contaminant.
Cool-Ox®:
Cool-Ox® is a patented remediation process designed to treat in-situ as well as ex-situ contaminants found in soils and groundwater. The process combines controlled chemical oxidation (targeting hydrocarbons) with abiotic chemical reduction (targeting halogenated organic compounds). Utilizing the application of a single aqueous based formulation, the hydrocarbons are hydroxylated (oxidized) to form alcohols and/or weak organic acids while halogenated compounds are reduced to carbon dioxide and free halogen ions.
The process is based upon using hydrogen peroxide as the generator of the oxidizing radicals.
However, unlike the Fenton or Fenton like processes that use liquid hydrogen peroxide, the Cool- Ox® Process generates hydrogen peroxide from solid peroxygens that are injected into the soil or groundwater in an aqueous suspension. Once in place, the peroxygens react with water to produce hydrogen peroxide. This reaction is widely understood.
In conventional Fenton or Fenton like processes, the liquid hydrogen peroxide reacts with injected iron salts introduced to produce the oxidizing radicals. This reaction is largely uncontrollable and produces excessive amounts of heat. Even where the iron is introduced in a separate injection

Similarly, other processes that have begun using solid peroxygens with introduced iron salts find it difficult to avoid volatilization of contaminants because of the heat produced. The Cool-Ox® Process has eliminated these problems.
Because most peroxygens are only sparingly soluble in aqueous solutions, their dissolution rate is quite slow. Therefore, once injected they remain in the contaminated media for an extended period of time before they become soluble. This low solubility characteristic also allows peroxygens to be hydraulically distributed by the injection equipment thereby, increasing the radius of influence from the injection point. This significantly increases the probability of the oxidizer contacting the contaminants. However, the greatest distinguishing feature of the Cool-Ox® Process is that it does not require the introduction of iron salts to produce the radicals necessary for chemical oxidation.
The Cool-Ox® formulations include chelating compounds that activate the intrinsic catalytic metals in the soil matrix being treated. This eliminates the need to artificially introduce iron salts either as a component of the oxidizing reagent or injected sequentially. The use of chelates also imposes a second control factor (the first is the low solubility of the peroxygens) on the reaction rates of the oxidizers. These factors allow the oxidation reactions to proceed without producing heat.
Therefore, the probability of volatilizing contaminants because of heat generation is eliminated when the Cool-Ox® Process is properly employed. This increased control eliminates the risk associated with other oxidizing processes and there are no hazardous metals such as lead, chrome or arsenic in the Cool-Ox® formulations. In fact, the only artifact remaining after the Cool-Ox® process has completed contaminant mitigation is calcium. Because the calcium from the process is indistinguishable from naturally occurring calcium compounds such as limestone or calcium carbonates, the Cool-Ox® process is the only truly “Green Technology” available to date.
An additional and extremely important characteristic of the Cool-Ox® Process is the pH at which the oxidation reactions proceed. Unlike the Fenton or Fenton-Like reactions that require a low (acidic) pH, the optimum pH of the Cool-Ox® Process is slightly basic at around pH 8.
This is critical for treating contaminants found in limestone or soils containing high concentrations of carbonates where a low pH would be buffered toward neutrality. Equally important is the factor that almost all phenolic, chloro-phenolic and chlorinated organic compounds exhibit organic acid characteristics. In general, these compounds become increasingly soluble in aqueous solutions as the pH is increased. Once soluble, they are quite susceptible to oxidation via the Cool-Ox® Process. Thus, a broad family of troublesome recalcitrant compounds such as creosotes, PCP, PCBs, PAHs, fuel hydrocarbons, dioxins as well as a host of herbicides and pesticides are treatable using the Cool-Ox® Process.
While the primary function of the Technology is the abiotic hydroxylation of organic contaminants, many see the process as a highly effective and valuable precursor to aerobic bioremediation.

Once hydroxylated (converted to alcohols), contaminants which, prior to treatment with the Cool-Ox® process, were recalcitrant to biodegradation become an abundant carbon source for microbial proliferation. It is not unusual to observe heterotrophic microbial plate counts which prior to treatment may range in the hundreds or thousands, elevating to millions or tens of millions in samples collected subsequent to a Cool-Ox® application. It has also been observed in laboratory studies that the technology does not inhibit microbial processes or have a detrimental effect on plants.

Application & Equipment:
DTI has the technology, equipment and experience to meet field application challenges in all types of weather and geographics. Where circumstances exist that require equipment not in our inventory, we have leasing agreements with vendors that we can exercise to meet our needs.
And, we often network with our contracting affiliates to supply environmental remedial expertise as the need arises.

Deep-Shot™ Rig: The Deep-Shot™ Rig is the work horse of the DTI application team. This unit is 100% self-contained and is powered by a diesel engine driving hydraulic pumps that mix and inject the Cool-Ox® reagent. Because the unit creates no spurious static electrical discharges, it can be safely used in the proximity of flammable materials. The unit has been successful in pumping to injectors over 200 yards away. Reagent is delivered to the injection equipment through high pressure hydraulic hose that are wire wound and thus, complete a grounded circuit from injector to the Deep- Shot™ Rig. The Rig is itself grounded thus, completing the circuit. The unit is designed to work in all types of weather including subzero cold. However, work is halted if lightning storms are threatening. The unit is also equipped with an explosion proof electrical generator that can provide 120-volt AC power for working in remote locations or at night in areas where lighting is not available.
Direct Push Technology (DPT) Injections: The Direct Push Technology (DPT) application process of the Cool-Ox® Technology is our most highly demanded application.
We use our AMS Power Probe 9500VTR rig to drive 1 ½ inch hollow core steel rods to the desired depth (generally just below contaminate level) and begin injection. Cool-Ox® is injected throughout the contaminated zone at pre-determined depth intervals from the bottom up or from top down. This process allows us to completely saturate the contaminated soil with the reagent in a cost effective and efficient application process at depths greater than ten to fifteen feet.
DPT is ideal for work on sites where the soils consist of clay, sand, and silty sand. DPT can also be implemented in soils containing cobbles. DeepEarth Technologies, Inc. has completed projects using the DPT application on sites that contain concentrations of limestone as well.

Most injections are completed using the “Bottom-Up” approach. This technique provides greater displacement of the groundwater with Cool-Ox® because there is less likely to be annulus leakage at greater depth. Prior to DPT injections, all injection points will be cleared by application of a “soft advance” hand-held HydroDart™ (described below) unit that can locate utilities or piping without damage.
It may be required that our field crew employ angled DPT injections if the contaminants are located under roads, buildings, etc. It should be noted that the exact positioning of IPs will, no doubt, be adjusted to conform to the conditions encountered during the site work. These modifications are necessary because the Cool-Ox® technology is a dynamic process that can be adjusted in the field to meet changing or previously unreported conditions.
Hydro-Dart™ Hand Lance: DTI’s Hydro- Dart™ is a hand held injection tool which uses high velocity fluid to cut the soil, allowing it to be inserted by hand. It is especially useful where sandy or clay soils are encountered. It is not generally well suited where gravelly or aggregate fill materials where cobbles or crushed rock are incorporated. This application method allows DTI to treat soils from a depth of zero (0) to a depth of twelve (12) feet with minimal disruption to surface vegetation. A maximum depth of (twelve) 12 feet is preferred however, applications to fourteen (14) feet have been completed with the aid of an additional technician. Since no machinery is required at the injection point, little to no disruption of surface vegetation is apparent.
The Hydro-Dart™ lance is a 5/8-inch steel rod. DTI’s field crew pumps Cool-Ox® under pressure and advances it into the subsurface. The pressure varies from site to site depending on the lithology. Pressures between 150-500 psi can be expected.
When we reach the desired depth, the pressure is lowered (by decreasing the pump rate) to keep the annulus of the rod sealed. If debris is encountered, such as cobbles, wood, cement pieces, or any material we cannot push through, the DPT rig is implemented. If the lithology doesn’t allow the annulus to seal, then again, the DPT rig is implemented to seal the rod and insure the distribution of the Cool-Ox® reagent into the subsurface.
The Hydro-Dart™ has also proven to be a very useful tool for injecting under building slabs or inside basements by sampling drilling access ports through the concrete floors. If any daylighting of the reagent occurs, it is immediately captured employing a shop or drum vacuums. This material can be contained for legal disposal. When the work is completed, the injection ports are sealed with bentonite and the appropriate paving material.

The Cool-Ox® Hydro-Dart™ application process is a highly efficient, non-invasive technique for treating shallow sub-surface contaminants. The Hydro-Dart™ application process used with the Cool-Ox® technology is an extension of DTI’s Direct Push Injection Technology. This application process may also be the most cost-effective application method for certain sites, depending on the depth of the contaminant and if underground piping or utilities are in the treatment zone.
Typical Execution Plan:
DTI will mobilize to the site, conduct a visual survey, determine the most efficient method to conduct the work and set up the equipment. A site safety meeting will be conducted prior to initiating any work wherein all personnel accessing the site are informed and understand the work procedures and any associated hazards.
The work will begin with the injection point (IP) locations being cleared of surface debris, and subsequently marked with traffic paint and/or pin flags. An IP will then be driven (using DPT equipment) to depth near the up-gradient extent of the treatment zone and the injection process initiated. Upon completion of the injection at this IP, a series of IPs will then be completed in a “checkerboard” pattern within the treatment area.
The area will be treated in a manner that will allow the maximum volume of reagent to be delivered to the subsurface. (The most favorable injection method will be determined by observing the reaction of the injection point of the Cool-Ox® reagents.) This process will be repeated for the treatment of the remaining area. Upon completion of each IP and after withdrawing the DPT tooling, each IP location will be abandoned and tamped to a depth of six (6) feet with Bentonite granules, and the location will be marked with a pin flag.
DTI expects that the bulk of the contaminant source(s) in the soil and groundwater can be destroyed in a single application. However, if a volume of Cool-Ox® reagent cannot be delivered in a sufficient quantity to destroy the contaminant, additional applications may be necessary. If reapplication is needed, the area(s) are expected to be considerably smaller than the initial treatment.
