Fordyce first came to Hot Springs in 1873 seeking relief from injuries he received in the Civil War. He found rickety bathhouses, crowded streets, and lots of potential. Over the next 40 years, Fordyce put money into hotels, an opera house, city utilities, and several bathhouses. His work helped turn Hot Springs into a world-class health destination.
Samuel Fordyce and the Fordyce Bathhouse The People of Hot Springs
You are standing in the Fordyce Bathhouse, built by railroad magnate Samuel Fordyce. “Feeling that it was entirely by the use of hot water that I was restored to health I concluded to erect and equip the finest bathing establishment in the world.”
Samuel Fordyce, 1914
Samuel Fordyce in front of the Fordyce Bathhouse, shortly after its completion in 1915. The building closed in 1962 as bathing’s popularity declined. It reopened as the park visitor center in 1989.

The thermal water you see at Hot Springs today comes from rain that fell nearly 4,500 years ago. Rainwater in nearby mountains collects in a watershed known as the “recharge” area. As it seeps down through layers of novaculite, sandstone, and shale, the water is heated by a naturally occurring geothermal gradient. More than a mile below the earth’s surface, a narrow fault allows the hot water to shoot back toward the surface, where it emerges as thermal springs.
For more information on Hot Springs hydrology and geology, visit the US Geological Survey (USGS) website.
HOT WATER, NATURALLY
Make it rain!
Arkansas Novaculite You can find novaculite throughout the Ouachita Mountains—but almost nowhere else. American Indians used this dense rock to make durable tools and weapons.
Hot Springs Sandstone This hard, grainy rock is made of sand-sized pieces of quartz. Milky quartz fills in the cracks, creating sandstone’s distinctive white streaks.

TUFA
A dissolved mineral called calcium carbonate often accumulates around the springs to form tufa. Long-term tufa buildups can become elaborate outcroppings.
Right: This rendering shows how the springs might have looked before human intervention. Notice the tufa caked on the mountainside. You can still find tufa exposures in the park today.
SHALE
One of the types found on West Mountain, this shale is softer and more breakable than the region’s other major rocks.
VALLEY OF
THE VAPORS
For thousands of years, springs bubbled out from the green mountainsides, casting off clouds of vapor. Minerals from the water created massive blankets of tufa, a white and tan mineral deposited around the springs’ openings. Imagine you are one the area’s first visitors. What would you make of this natural wonder?
“…the hot springs themselves are indeed a very great natural curiosity…” William Dunbar, explorer, 1805

A DELICATE BALANCE
Each of the thermal springs in the park is a little different.
Some springs trickle out of the ground; others gush.
Some have changed over time, occasionally as a result of human activity. When workers drilled a well near the Fordyce Bathhouse, one spring surged to life while another ran dry. This surprising interaction suggests that the springs are interconnected—in a delicate balance with one another and the surrounding environment.
HOW OLD IS THAT?
The water coming out of Hot Springs today fell as rain nearly 4,500 years ago—the same time the pyramids of Egypt were being built!

In 1804 President Thomas Jefferson sent explorers William Dunbar and George Hunter to lead the first scientific expedition of this region. Dunbar and Hunter observed the area’s resources and wildlife. They measured the springs’ temperature and flow. They also found what they called “minute animalcules” living in the water.
Dunbar described these small organisms as “shaped like a muscle or kidney.” Scientists continue to build on Dunbar and Hunter’s discoveries today.
Far Left: William Dunbar surveys the unfamiliar landscape. Dunbar worked as a merchant and cotton planter in Mississippi but became known for his scientific talents.
Left: George Hunter analyzes a water sample.
A chemist from Philadelphia, Dr. Hunter had previously made explorations along the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers.

BECOMING A
COMMUNITY
Hot Springs began as a natural wonder but evolved into a thriving community.
People have been drawn to Hot Springs’ warm waters for centuries. Archeology suggests that people first lived here about 3,000 years ago. In the early 1800s, settlers set up camps around the springs. This community grew as people came for the healing waters and stayed to profit from them.
These pioneers opened the area’s first hotels, stores, and bathhouses. The federal government soon recognized the springs’ value—and their need for protection. In 1832 Congress passed a law designating Hot Springs as a federal reservation. This act guaranteed public access to the springs.
Background: With thermal water gurgling out of the mountainsides, Hot Springs must have been an impressive sight for its first settlers.
These pioneers pitched tents and built log cabins near the springs.
Far Left: Asa Thompson constructed the first bathhouse in 1830. Early bathhouses and lodgings like this one provided primitive access to the springs
Left: Benjamin Franklin Kelley became Hot Springs Reservation’s first superintendent in 1877. His job was to establish order and regulate the burgeoning number of bathhouses.
Not everyone could afford life in the growing town. Poor people visiting the springs crowded into makeshift campsites like this one, called “Ral City.”

EARLY BATHHOUSES
The first bathing facilities were little more than tents propped over the springs. Businessmen later built bathhouses, but the wooden buildings rotted from the hot water and vapor. In 1878 a fire blazed through Hot Springs, ushering in a new era of construction along Bathhouse Row. Bathhouse owners put up large, opulent structures to match the decorative tastes of the Gilded Age.
Far Left: The Weir & George Iron & Magnesia Bathhouse in the 1870s.
The Ozark Bathhouse stands at this site today.
Left: The Independent and Palace Bathhouses under construction in the 1880s. Although still made of wood, these new structures were much more elaborate than their predecessors.

If you had visited Hot Springs during its prime, chances are you would have spotted some influential people. President Theodore Roosevelt took a thermal bath here in 1910.
Former Union General William Sherman visited alongside fellow Civil War veterans.
Railroad baron Jay Gould and industrialist Andrew Carnegie both made trips to Hot Springs. Social activists Jane Addams and Carrie Nation could also be seen in the area, preaching reform.

Bathhouse Row has been built and rebuilt many times. The Hale Bathhouse, built in 1892, is the oldest of the grand architecture you see now. From 1912 to 1923, bathhouse owners competed to build the most impressive facilities. These friendly rivalries turned Bathhouse Row into the remarkable group of buildings we see today.
