About this file
This is a Statement of Work (SOW) for the design, fabrication, inspection, testing, and delivery of a 7th axis robotic system for the MAGREF (Magnetism Reflectometer) instrument at Oak Ridge National Laboratory's Spallation Neutron Source facility. The procurement is being managed by Oak Ridge National Laboratory (the Company) on behalf of the U.S. Department of Energy under contract DE-AC05-00OR22725, with UT-Battelle, LLC as the managing entity.
The robotic system must include a 6-axis Universal Robot UR12e mounted on a linear actuator (7th axis) to assist with loading and unloading sample sticks into a cryomagnet located approximately 8 feet above the floor. Key performance requirements specify a structural member of at least 115 inches in length with M8 T-Nut fastening hardware, a linear actuator with a minimum 79-inch stroke and greater than 1,000-pound load capacity with ±0.3mm repeatability, a Robotiq Hand-E Gripper as the end effector, fully integrated robotic control system with URCaps software integration, an E-stop module, machine pendant, two proximity sensors, and at least 12 meters of extension cable. All electrical equipment must be NRTL-compliant. The Seller is responsible for providing design drawings and step files for approval prior to fabrication, developing comprehensive manufacturing and material control plans, submitting nonconformance reports and deviation requests for Company approval, and conducting inspections with documentation. The Company reserves the right to witness all tests and inspections and perform additional verification prior to installation. Packaging must include corrosion protection measures and proper labeling, with shipment directed to the Instrument Engineering Group at the SNS Target Building in Oak Ridge, Tennessee.

2. SCOPE
The scope of this document is to define the requirements for design, materials of construction, fabrication, inspection, testing, and delivery of the MAGREF 7th axis robotic system (also referred to as robot elsewhere in this document). The Company is defined as the purchasing entity, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, who is contracting the services of the Seller. The Seller refers to the parties responsible for providing the robot that meet the requirements that are defined herein. It will be the Seller’s responsibility to repair or remake any components which are found to not meet requirements.
3. TECHNICAL DESCRIPTION
The Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is a research neutron scattering facility that provides a constant pulsed neutron source to a suite of neutron scattering instruments. Neutron instrument BL04A (also known as MAGREF) is a magnetism reflectometer which provides specular reflection and grazing incidence small angle neutron scattering (GISANS) science to the neutron science community.
The MAGREF instrument operates in many sample environment configurations. One of these sample configurations requires a long sample stick to be inserted into the top of a cryomagnet approximately 8 feet above the floor. To assist with the loading and unloading of the sample sticks a robotic system will be procured from the Seller that includes a 6-axis robot mounted onto a linear actuator allowing for greater reach. This type of robotic system is typically known as a 7th axis robotic system.
