About this file

This file contains detailed technical drawings and specifications for elk fence construction from the Wyoming Game and Fish Department's Fencing Procedures Manual dated 03/01/2012. The drawings show standard elk fence specifications including a main fence design requiring FLPT wood post construction with 12-ft post spacing, consisting of 47-inch and 26-inch 9-gauge woven wire courses plus two strands of barbed wire positioned 5 and 10 inches above the woven wire. The fence must be 5 inches off the ground.

The manual provides detailed diagrams for corner construction requiring six 12-ft posts spaced 18 inches apart, steel "T" post installation every quarter mile for lightening protection, and fence extension options allowing additional 26-inch courses to increase height as needed. Post spacing may be reduced to 8 ft minimum on slopes or difficult terrain. The specifications indicate this fencing is designed to prevent elk from commingling with domestic livestock while allowing for proper wildlife migration patterns. All cross wires must be stapled to posts, and the top and bottom net wire must be tied together at least three times between spans.
