False Island Road Maintenance Questions and Answers

UPDATE 5/23/2016

AG-0109-S-16-0013

1 | P a g e

Q1. On sheet 4 of 7, there is no log diameter listed.

A1. Diameters of logs are show on the sheet 5 notes

Q2. What is the distance from LTF to logs?

A2. The distance is not known but is being investigated. Additional information will be provided in a subsequent amendment.

UPDATE: The closest logs/trees are approximately 1.4 miles from the LTF/MAF. Other locations are 2.25 and 3.25 miles. The closest location (1.4 miles) would require road work to obtain as it is on a closed out/water barred system. It is estimated that access to this location will take approximately 2 hours of excavator machine time. The other locations (2.25 and 3.25 miles) would not require any road work to access.

Q3. Will we be able to shovel logs with excavator?

A3. Yes.

Q4. Sheet 3 of 6 has no description, item number, method of measurement or unit.

A4. A corrected set of drawings has been provided as an attachment.

Q5. What is the spec for the beaver bafflers listed in Option Item #3?

A5. FSSS 602- Culverts & Drains Add the following:

Beaver Baffles

Fencing shall be installed in a configuration that fits on the inlet of the culvert constructed in a basket of rectangular or circular shape that extends a minimum of twice the pipe diameter upstream of the culvert. A larger opening shall be constructed on the upstream end of the basket with an eight inch diameter opening. Fencing shall be 2” x 4” ½ gauge galvanized welded wire fastened with 8 gauge galvanized wire fastened with galvanized nuts, bolts or clamps. Structure shall be held in place with 4 pieces of number 5 rebar embed in the stream bed a minimum of 3 feet in gravel or drilled into rock.

UPDATE:

Specification for the beaver bafflers listed in Option Item #3 is changed to read as follows:

Baffles to prevent beaver blocking culvert inlets shall be constructed of short sections of culvert of the same diameter and material of the culvert. The baffle shall be constructed by cutting the culvert at a 45 degree angle and welding the pieces to make a 90 degree angle.

The baffle shall be joined with a coupling band onto the inlet of the culvert according to AASHTO M36 or M196. The baffle shall be attached so that the culvert opening is sloped toward the stream bottom.

Q6a. Is there a float or boat facility at False Island?

Q6b. Is there any beach landing at Sitkoh Bay?

A6a/b. There is a Forest Service airplane float facility at False Island, which boats are generally not permitted to use. There is an old LTF at Sitkoh Bay operated in 2013-2014 by Sealaska. It was used in 2015 to load and unload materials and heavy equipment. There is also an undeveloped beach gravel road/ramp at Sitkoh Bay suitable for small skiffs (e.g. Lund) and inflatables alongside the LTF. Both are higher tide level dependent.
