Retain first paragraph below if tie-ins to existing roofing are required.
Install roof membrane and auxiliary materials to tie in to existing roofing to maintain weathertightness of transition.
ROOFING INSTALLATION DETAILS
Choose only one of the following two NRCA Installation Details paragraphs. The first is a short version of the second.
Retain first "NRCA Installation Details" Paragraph below and delete following Paragraph and selected subparagraphs if Project drawings include adequate roofing installation details.
NRCA Installation Details: Install roofing system in accordance with applicable NRCA Manual Plates and NRCA recommendations; modify as required to comply with manufacturer's approved details and perimeter fastening requirements of FM Global references if applicable.
INSULATION INSTALLATION
Comply with built-up roofing manufacturer's written instructions for installing roof insulation.
Coordinate installing membrane roofing system components, so insulation is not exposed to precipitation or left exposed at the end of the workday.
Cant Strips: Install and secure preformed 45-degree cant strips at junctures of built-up roofing with vertical surfaces or angle changes greater than 45 degrees.
Tapered Insulation and Crickets: Install tapered insulation under area of roofing to conform to slopes indicated.
Include the bracketed option when roof slope is less than 1/4 inch in 12 inches.
Where crickets are indicated or required to provide positive slope to drain, make slope of cricket’s minimum of two times the roof slope, not less than 1/4 inch in 12 inches (1:48).
Install insulation with long joints of insulation in a continuous straight line with end joints staggered between rows, abutting edges and ends between boards. Fill gaps exceeding 1/4 inch (6 mm) with insulation.
Cut and fit insulation within 1/4 inch (6 mm) of Nailers, projections, and penetrations.
Insulation manufacturers usually recommend thickness in first paragraph below as maximum thickness of a single insulation layer. Edit paragraphs below to establish thickness of insulation required by code and project conditions. Coordinate with drawings. Consider using actual thickness in lieu of R-value/RSI to avoid disputes based upon alternate methods of calculating thermal resistance of insulation. (The base layer of insulation is the first, single, board layer, not the total flat-stock layer(s).) The minimum thickness of the base layer is often dictated by the wind uplift tested assembly; refer to applicable test report.
R-Value is an imperial system unit of measurement (ft2·°F·h/BTU) and the RSI Value is a metric system unit of measurement (sq. m.·K/W). To convert an R-Value to an RSI Value, divide the R-Value by 5.678. Conversely, to convert an RSI Value to an R-Value, multiply the RSI Value by 5.678.
NOTE: PIMA recommends two layers of equal thickness totaling [3.6 inches (91 mm) = R-20] [4.4 inches (112 mm) = R-25] [5.2 inches (132 mm) = R-30] [6.2 inches (157 mm) = R35] [7.0 inches (178 mm) = R-40]. NRCA recommend using R-5.0 per each 1 inch of thickness. The thickness of any layer should not be less than the minimum thickness required by the wind-tested assembly listing.
Install insulation under area of roofing to achieve required thickness. Where overall insulation thickness is 2.7 inch (70 mm) or greater, install two or more layers with joints of each succeeding layer staggered from joints of previous layer a minimum of 6 inches (150 mm) in each direction.
Retain one or both Insulation System Paragraphs below as appropriate for Project. Insert values and select either IP or SI unit of measure. If both IP and SI measurements are required use in-line editing to revise. IBC refers to R-value for Continuous Insulation (CI).
Flat Insulation System on Sloped Roof Deck: Install insulation at minimum thickness as follows:
Minimum total thickness of Continuous Insulation: 5.2 inches.
If required: Tapered Insulation System for Flat Roof Deck: Install insulation as follows:
CAUTION! "Average R-value" is ONLY permitted in jurisdictions under IECC-2021. IECC-2018 and prior MUST use "Minimum thickness" and "Continuous R-value."
IECC 2021’s Section C402.2.1.1-Tapered, Above-Deck Insulation Based on Thickness indicates when tapered insulation is used as a component of a roof-ceiling assembly R-value calculation, the tapered insulation’s R-value contribution to that calculation must use the average thickness in inches along with the material R-value per inch to comply with the minimum R-value required by the code. 1-inch (25 mm) thickness is required at low point (such as roof drain).
Minimum total thickness of Continuous Insulation: 3.5 inches.
Retain below if required for Project. Insulation drain sumps are allowed to taper down to a thickness of not less than 1 inch (25 mm) less than the thickness required to achieve the continuous insulation thickness required by code. The size of the sump is further dictated by the slope. For example: A 1-inch (25 mm) deep sump at 1/4 inch per foot (1:48) slope would have a size of 4 ft. by 4 ft (1200 by 1200 mm). To accommodate larger and/or deeper sumps, increase total insulation thickness as necessary.
Insulation Drain Sumps: Tapered insulation sumps, not less than 2 by 2 ft (600 by 600 mm), sloped to roof drain.
For projects under IECC-2018 and earlier.
Sump to maximum depth of not more than 1 inch (25 mm) less than the Project-stipulated continuous insulation thickness based upon code requirements.
For projects under IECC-2021, using Average R-value.
Maintain a minimum of 1 inch (25 mm) insulation thickness at low point.
Trim surface of insulation where necessary at roof drains so completed surface is flush and does not restrict flow of water.
Install tapered edge strips at perimeter edges of roof that do not terminate at vertical surfaces.
Retain applicable "Insulation Application Method" Paragraph(s) below.
Adhered Insulation Application Method: Install each layer of insulation and adhere to substrate as follows:
Prime surface of concrete deck with asphalt primer and allow primer to dry.
Choose one of the following methods for adhering insulation. Coordinate with wind-tested assembly listing.
Set each layer of insulation in a solid mopping of hot roofing asphalt, applied within plus or minus 25 deg. F (14 deg. C) of equiviscous temperature.
Set each layer of insulation in ribbons of bead-applied insulation adhesive, firmly pressing and maintaining insulation in place.
Cover Board Installation: Install cover boards over insulation with long joints in continuous straight lines with end joints staggered between rows. Offset joints of insulation below a minimum of 6 inches (150 mm) in each direction. Loosely butt cover boards together. Tape joints if required by roofing manufacturers.
Retain one of two options below if mechanical fastening of cover board is required. Use first option if specifying uplift by referencing FMG; use second option if referencing ASCE-7 or other engineered requirements.
Fasten cover board to resist uplift pressure at corners, perimeter, and field of roof.
