About this file
This document provides a weight estimate report for a floating pier barge to be constructed for McMurdo Station in Antarctica under solicitation number W912BU-23-B-0016 issued by the Department of the Army Corps of Engineers Engineering District Philadelphia. The report details the lightship weight estimate of 3,018 metric tons including margins, as well as five design loading conditions accounting for items such as accumulated ice, installed shore bridges and mooring struts, cargo loads, and permanent ballast. General hydrostatic properties, critical draft points, and loading condition graphics are presented for each case. Appendices A and B provide supplementary weight and loading condition data from the GHS hull modeling software.

Summary
This report summarizes the lightship weight, loading condition deadweights, and static response of the barge-like floating pier to the roll-on/roll-off (RORO) activities expected during unloading operations.
The weights and loading conditions do not exceed the upper ice waterline (UIWL) identified by
Reference 1. Hydrostatic calculations are based on the hull geometry described in Reference 2 with hydrostatic properties as identified by Reference 1.
Weight
Lightship Weight
The estimated lightship weight of the barge-like floating pier is shown in Table 1. This weight estimate uses the weight and VCG margins set forth in Reference 3, consistent with the level of
Weight Estimate Report 2 Doc. 887-B115-01, Rev -design completion. A detailed weight estimate can be found in Appendix A and is also included in Reference 4.

Loading Conditions
Five loading conditions were evaluated with the following items included (Reference 5):
• Transit o Tow bridle and emergency tow wire o Skegs o Icing o Allowable deck cargo complement of approximately 900 LT, including:
▪ Fendering equipment, including rubber cone fenders and fender pads
▪ Shore bridges, mooring struts, and load cells
▪ Additional deck cargo up to 600 LT
• Summer (Resupply) Season o Fenders o Installed shore bridges, mooring struts, and load cells o Icing, assumed 50% icing load due to clearing vehicle deck o Permanent ballast installed at McMurdo Station o Allowable deck cargo complement of approximately 700 LT, including:
▪ Two trucks (80,000-lb gross vehicle weight, including cargo), material handling equipment (MHE).
▪ Cargo handling equipment and storage
▪ Up to 580 LT additional cargo on deck, including unloaded cargo awaiting transfer to trucks or portable equipment
• Winter Season o Rubber cone of fenders
▪ Does not include fendering pads (removed for winter) o Icing o Snow
Weight Estimate Report 3 Doc. 887-B115-01, Rev -o Shore bridges, mooring struts, and load cells o Permanent ballast installed at McMurdo Station
• Light Installed o Fenders o Shore bridges, mooring struts, and load cells o Permanent ballast installed at McMurdo Station
• Post-Delivery Transit o Tow bridle and emergency tow wire o Skegs o Icing o Permanent ballast installed at McMurdo Station o Ballast carried on deck to balance installed permanent ballast
The Light Installed loading condition is intended to be representative of the expected minimum draft experienced in ice. However, the lower ice waterline (LIWL) draft of 6’-4” for determining
Polar Class structure zones as described in Reference 5 is assumed to be the minimum draft experienced in the lightship condition for conservatism and to increase the allowable trim envelope in the light installed loading condition.
The design loading condition deadweights and centers are reported in Table 2. Overall loading condition displacements, and hydrostatics are reported in Table 3. Further detail in the loading condition weight estimates is included in Appendix B and Reference 6. Additional hydrostatic properties for each loading condition as produced by the General Hydrostatics (GHS) run files in
References 7 and 8 can be found in Appendix B and Reference 9. No loading condition exceeds the 8-ft upper ice waterline (UIWL) requirement, including the effects of trim and heel.

Environmental Load Calculations
Icing loads were determined in accordance with IMO Polar Code Chapter 4.3.1.1, and are located on decks and exposed side shell plating. The snow weight was calculated using the typical 6-to-8-inch snow cover on the sea ice sheet covering the McMurdo embayment
(Reference 10). The snow density was assumed to be equal to the average snow density of 385 kg/m3 as reported by Reference 11 across 18 different locations on the sea ice in McMurdo sound. This value is within the range of typical densities reported by Reference 10 for dry old snow. Drifting snow that accumulates in sheltered areas is typical at McMurdo station.
Therefore, the snow cover on the sea ice sheet is expected to be more representative of the exposed barge deck than total yearly precipitation. The bull rail and other deck fittings will increase the amount snow drifting on deck, but these fittings have relatively low prominence and are not expected to have a significant impact on this assumption.
Ballast Calculations
Asymmetries in the barge design, most notably the off-center weight of the shore bridges and mooring struts, will cause the barge to trim and heel without permanent ballast. The required amount of permanent ballast to be installed at McMurdo Station was calculated to make the barge pier have zero static heel and trim during the summer resupply season, minimizing the maximum deck slope experienced during dynamic unloading operations and maximizing the allowable deadweight before exceeding UIWL draft. Ballast calculations for installation at
McMurdo station were based on fixed ballast with a specific gravity of 4.8.
The amount of ballast required to make the barge pier have zero heel and trim during any return voyages for drydocking and inspection was also calculated. The total permanent and temporary ballast weight that would be used for a return voyage is less than the deck cargo allowance of approximately 900 LT in the transit loading condition, so a return voyage is not a limiting loading condition.
The ballast plan drawing (Reference 12) describes ballast including permanent fixed ballast and temporary deck ballast. The geometry and structure of the bins to contain the permanent ballast is identified.
Roll-on, Roll-off Study
The envelope of the heel angles and bridge deflections that would be produced by the moving trucks on the pier barge was determined by adding either one or two fully loaded trucks (80,000 lb each) to the light operating loading condition at the following locations:
• On centerline, representing the average heel during operations.
• On shore/starboard side, representing the heel as trucks move between the bridge and the barge.
• On pier/port side, representing the maximum heel while loading cargo on the truck.
The bridge connection and truck locations were taken at the extreme beam for conservatism to determine the envelope for heel angles during unloading operations. The trucks were placed amidships to consider heel only. Table 4 summarizes the results of the weight shifts for these different configurations, calculated using the General HydroStatics run file included in Reference
13. Additional detail is included in Reference 14. The maximum deck slope expected during loading operations approximately 1.3% to port or starboard.

Ice Cube Study
The change in the barge draft, trim, and heel resulting from ice flowing beneath the bottom of the barge in the winter condition were calculated to determine the resulting bridge deflection at the deck edge. An ice density of 57.2 lb/ft3 was used to assess bridge deflections for the following cases:
1. A 328’x100’x8’ ice block centered 164’ aft of FP and on centerline
2. A 164’x100’x8’ ice block centered 82’ aft of FP and on centerline
3. A 164’x50’x8’ ice block centered 82’ aft of FP and on centerline
4. A 328’x50’x8’ ice block centered 164’ aft of FP, 25’ to port
5. A 328’x50’x8’ ice block centered 164’ aft of FP, 25’ to stbd

7. A 164’x50’x8’ ice block centered 82’ aft of FP, 25’ to stbd
Table 5 shows the resulting trims, heels, and bridge deflections due to ice underneath the barge, calculated using the General HydroStatics run file included in Reference 15. Further detail is included in Reference 16.
