1.1 The Hillsborough County logo

The Hillsborough County logo acts as a unifying image for the County and its departments, creating a cohesive brand experience for Hillsborough County employees and residents.

The Hillsborough County logo must be used to identify Hillsborough County government on all communications. This includes external, and third-party communications, which are provided upon request.

It is the logo’s function to make Hillsborough County visible and recognizable statewide, nationwide, and around the world, and act as an interconnecting element for the various County departments and their activities.

Hillsborough County Logo Elements1.1

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, FL | BRAND GUIDELINES Brand Elements 6

The Hillsborough County logo must be used to identify Hillsborough County Government on all communications, including external, internal and third-party communications as requested. The integrity of the logo must be respected at all times. Never reproduce or modify it in any way. Always use the approved electronic file, which can be obtained by contacting the Communications & Digital Media department.

LOGO ELEMENTS

The Hillsborough County logo consists of two parts.

• The main wordmark. “Hillsborough County Florida” is typeset using the Soleto Bold typeface.

• The icon with the old Hillsborough County Courthouse dome can be used as a design element as long as the complete and proper logo is present elsewhere in the same communication. “EST. 1834” is typeset in Museo Slab 500.

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY LOGO

The Hillsborough County Servicemark1.2

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, FL | BRAND GUIDELINES Brand Elements 7

The Hillsborough County logo is a registered service mark with the Florida Department of State.

A service mark is a trademark used to identify a service rather than a product.

THE HISTORY BEHIND THE LOGO

Created in 1834 by the U.S. Legislative Council of the Territory of Florida, Hillsborough County has a long, rich history. Our new logo captures this past

– and embraces the exciting present.

The vivid Sky Orange and Deep Sea Blue colors symbolize our wonderful weather and waters, anchors of a thriving economy that also combine to provide a lush playground for residents and visitors.

The distinctive silhouette showcases one of the County’s most iconic images:

the silver dome that graced the top of the County Courthouse from 1892 until 1953, and is memorialized in Joe Chillura Courthouse Square. The image captures Hillsborough’s role as a strong leader in Florida’s economy, politics, tourism and agriculture for more than 180 years, and illustrates that the sky is the limit.

Take a trip with us inside this logo to relive the County’s history, and to dream big for its future.

The Hillsborough County primary color palette is intended to be inspiring, dynamic, and authentic. The consistent use of the core colors helps define and reinforce our distinctive brand character, and should be used on all communications and promotional materials.

We have enlisted the standards of the Pantone Matching System (PMS), which is a universally recognized color matching system based on lithography printing inks. Process match breakdowns (CMYK) for printing applications with limited budgets. Please note that these numbers may differ due to the way inks appear on different stocks. Please work with Communications & Digital Media to ensure correct use. Also included are RGB equivalents for use in word processing and presentation software, as well as hexadecimal equivalents for emitted light and web applications.

They are optimized for the majority of computer monitors, operating systems and browsers. Adhering to the Pantone matching system will allow for color to be reproduced and displayed in the most unified and consistent manner possible.

BOCC Appointed Committees1.24

Citizen participation in government is strongly encouraged. Whether created by the Board of County Commissioners or by Florida statutes, each advisory group promotes good government and the effective and efficient delivery of services.

BOCC Appointed Committees can only use the Hillsborough County wordmark, shown to the right. The name of the committee should appear in plain type using the Calibri font. The name of the Committee should never be locked up with the Hillsborough County wordmark.

Size and placement on the page can vary based on different layouts. Sample executions can be seen to the right.

Please refer to chapter 1.8 for the wordmark guidelines.

LEGACY EXCEPTIONS

The lockup illustrated on the right is the only exception. It will strictly follow the Hillsborough County brand guidelines.

BOCC policy - Section #: 01.21.00.00 requires that all boards, councils, and committees created by the Board of County Commissioners follow duly adopted Board of County Commissioners policies unless such policies exclusively apply to the Board of County Commissioners.

2.0 Photography

Great photography tells the Hillsborough County story, conveys the spirit of our culture and compels others to look more closely. A photo is the first thing we see on a page. It can draw us in and fuel our imagination.

People connecting with our brand should see themselves reflected in our programs and services. This makes photography an essential element of our brand style. Photos should represent the breadth of our community and our employees while reinforcing our brand personality traits.

Photographic Themes2.1

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, FL | BRAND GUIDELINES Photography 38

Hillsborough County photography is built upon four themes of expression:

lifestyle, nature, innovation, and diverse working environment. Photographs from each of these themes work together to tell a story. As a flexible system, each theme can be rescaled relative to the others, shifting the focus of the story to fit the intended audience.

2. NATURE1. LIFESTYLE

2.1.2

Photographic Style

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, FL | BRAND GUIDELINES Photography 40

2.2

Style Subjects should either be directly engaged with the camera and by extension our intended audience, or engaged with another person or activity when it makes sense. Subjects should always be portrayed as asset-rich, demonstrating our positive contribution to their quality of life.

Environment Residents and employees should be featured in the places they engage with Hillsborough County’s unique culture and environments that makes us a great place to live, work, and play.

Stock Photography Whenever possible, using original Hillsborough County imagery will add authenticity to our story and develop the visual strength of our brand.

In the event that original photography does not exist or cannot be used or created to tell a specific story, stock photography can be used to augment our existing photo library. When selecting emotion-based stock imagery follow the same criteria as original Hillsborough County photography. Make sure it feels authentic, genuine and focuses on a moment. When selecting stock imagery, it is important that it can co-exist seamlessly with original Hillsborough County photography.

AUTHENTICITY & NATURAL LIGHT DEPTH OF FIELD & SELECTIVE FOCUS

Whenever possible, capture people with genuine expressions.

Authenticity is also important and can be achieved by using as much natural light as possible. In dark environments where artificial light is necessary, try to mimic natural light by bouncing light indirectly. When capturing someone at work, shadow the subject and capture authentic moments that feel real.

Balanced compositions with symmetrical qualities allow different types of photography to work and complement one another.

Avoid extreme angles when possible. A concentrated depth of field that focuses on the subject and not the surroundings is also important to consider.

Photographic Techniques2.3

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, FL | BRAND GUIDELINES Photography 41

GET CLOSER: Make the viewer feel like they are part of the scene. Never pinch the screen to zoom, just move closer.

PHOTOGRAPHING PEOPLE: Do not crop at the joints, ankles, knees, wrists. Crop at a mid-point.

LIGHT: Watch for distracting shadows. They can weaken the impact of a photo, especially if they run across the subjects face. Do not shoot with the subject between you and the a direct light source such as, the sun.

MOVE: Don’t stand still, move around your subject. Look for interesting angles.

OBJECTS: Watch for objects sticking out from behind the subjects head such as trees, streetlights, and flagpoles.

Look for EMOTION/ACTION.

CANDID IMAGES: If the main subject of a photograph is a person or multiple people, the photo should have a photojournalistic, candid feel: natural smiles, real interactions and movements. Avoid overly staged photography, whenever possible.

Types of basic photos to shoot at each event:

SCENE SETTER: Give the viewer the big picture, where is this action taking place?

DETAIL SHOTS: Take images of any props or awards being presented. Close-up of patches or medals being worn by firefighter/police officers, decorations, food, etc.

PORTRAIT: Try to get a tight headshot of key speakers.

CROWD SHOT: Show the crowd. Not many onlookers? Shoot tight.

CROP PHOTOS

COLOR CORRECT PHOTOS

AVOID GROUP PHOTOS THAT DO NOT FOCUS ON A SINGLE SUBJECT

For a greater impact, crop your photos to highlight the subject you want your audience to focus on.

Use Photoshop’s auto settings to perform basic color corrections.

When taking a photograph of a group, select an individual for your audience to focus on.

Things to Avoid in Photos2.4

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, FL | BRAND GUIDELINES Photography 42

Do not use cliché metaphorical imagery with props.

Avoid awkward points of view.

Do not use or take overly posed photos, without any context.

Deliver your message without using somber or overly serious images. Instead try to focus on the positive effects of your campaign.

Do not use clip art - especially stick figures.

Avoid using images with special effects.

How to avoid cliché stock imagery or techniques Avoiding clichés in design may be difficult especially when clients want a particular image. The best way around it is to ask why do you want that particular image used? Is there another way to portray that without cliché stock images? Always ask yourself what you are trying to communicate and then work from that.
