Engine Gas Path Cleaner, MIL-PRF-85704 (Series) Isopropyl Alcohol, TT-I-735
A WASH
WARNING
AVOID EYE OR SKIN CONTACT WITH ENGINE GAS PATH
CLEANER, MIL-PRF-85704 (SERIES). THE FOLLOWING
CHEMICALS MEET MIL-PRF-85704 (SERIES): B&B
TC-100N-3, B&B 3100, OR TURCO 5884. AVOID INHALATION
AND INGESTION. USE IN WELL-VENTILATED AREA. WASH
THOROUGHLY AFTER HANDLING.
1. Water wash the compressor as follows:
a. Frequency of application are as follows:
(1) Engines which have been operated in a sea air environment subject to salt water ingestion shall have compressor section washed IAW following criteria to rinse away water soluble corrosive deposits from internal surfaces of compressor section.
WARNING
KEEP ISOPROPYL ALCOHOL, TT-I-735, AWAY FROM ALL
SOURCES OF IGNITION. AVOID CONTACT WITH SKIN OR
EYES. AVOID INHALATION OR INGESTION. ISOPROPYL
ALCOHOL MAY DAMAGE SOME FORMS OF PLASTICS,
ALUMINUM, RUBBER, AND COATINGS.
CAUTION
METHYL ALCOHOL SHALL NOT BE USED AS AN ANTI-
FREEZE AGENT IN LIEU OF ISOPROPYL ALCOHOL.
CAUTION
WHEN TEMPERATURES ARE BELOW 40° F, WATER USED
FOR WASH PROCEDURE WILL BE MIXED WITH 50 PERCENT
ISOPROPYL ALCOHOL.
(2) An engine that has ingested salt water or mist directly into compressor inlet shall receive water wash application after last flight of day. This will cover such situations as direct contact with wave splash or near seashore operation with wind pickup of salt water mist or spray.
DESTRUCTION NOTICE - Destroy by any method that will prevent disclosure of contents or reconstruction of the document. Page 5 of 7
HC-130

REV’D 09/30/08
(3) Engines not directly exposed to sea air environments, salt laden air, salt water mist or spray, during flight or ground operation but stationed in an area near such conditions shall receive water wash each 15 days, unless inspection indicates it is needed more often.
NOTE: Sea water mist or spray tends to decrease rapidly in first half mile from seashore line and at altitudes over 500 feet. This condition will vary with climate, wind direction and velocity. Frequent inspec-tions for evidence of salt deposits and corrosion in compressor sec-tion shall be necessary to determine corrosive environment to which engines have been subjected.
NOTE: Engines flown offshore (from home station) on long route, high altitude, flights to areas where water wash facilities are not avail-able, shall receive a water wash upon return to home station.
(4) An engine that will not be operated for a period of three (3) days or more and that did not receive a water wash after its last flight shall require a water wash prior to inactive status. After water wash has been completed, cover engine intake duct, exhaust duct and close bleed valves.
(5) Inactive installed engines that have received the water wash application immediately prior to be-coming inactive may remain inactive for a period of 14 days. If inactivity is to continue, the water wash application must be reapplied at the end of the 14th day unless an inspection should indi-cate that the need does not exist.
b. Remove salt and other corrosive water soluble deposits from aircraft inlet duct, air inlet housing strut and inlet and outer bands of inlet guide vanes by use of a static engine water spray. Water wash shall be accomplished prior to each compressor section water wash, utilizing water wash trailer and water wash hose.
c. Allow engine to cool for a minimum of 45 minutes after shutdown.
d. Gain access to engine air supply connections.
(1) Disconnect the outlet hose from SPEED SENSITIVE valve.
(2) Connect air supply hose to outlet hose going to 5th and 10th stage bleed valves.
e. Water/chemical supply connections:
(1) Disconnect torquemeter shroud anti-ice at the three way fitting on the left side of the air inlet housing. Attach water/chemical supply hose to three-way fitting.
f. Connect the hose assembly (air and water to the 70 foot hose of the trailer using quick-disconnect connections). Apply 60 to 100 PSIG air to close 5th and 10th stage bleed valves. Maintain this pressure throughout the compressor washing cycle to prevent cleaning solution from entering the engine nacelle.
g. Position one technician in the cockpit and one technician at the wash trailer with intercom extension for ground operation. Crew must be extremely alert for personal hazards and for objects that could cause FOD.
CAUTION
DISABLE THE FUEL AND IGNITION CIRCUITS. PULL THE IGNI-
TION CONTROL CIRCUIT BREAKER AND ENSURE THAT THE
CONDITION LEVER IS IN GROUND STOP.
NOTE: Fresh water rinsing exhaust areas/rear fuselage, before and after compressor wash will help prevent paint stains caused by tail pipe soap residue.
h. Start injection of water solution and motor the engine with the starter to available RPM for 60 seconds.
This will inject approximately 10 U.S. gallons of solution into compressor.

i. Allow solution to soak for five minutes, then motor the engine again while injecting fresh water to rinse the compressor of the cleaning solution. Observe water exiting turbine for evidence of the soap solution.
j. Five minutes after releasing the STARTER button/switch, motor the engine again while injecting fresh water to rinse the compressor of the cleaning solution.
CAUTION
DO NOT EXCEED STARTER LIMITATIONS.
k. Air supply disconnections after wash:
(1) Disconnect air supply hose from bleed air connection.
(2) Reconnect the bleed valve hose to outlet fitting of the SPEED SENSITIVE valve.
l. Water/chemical supply disconnections after wash:
(1) Disconnect water/chemical supply hose from anti-ice three-way fitting. Reconnect torquemeter shroud anti-ice hose.
m. Inspect engine/nacelle for FOD.
QA REQUIRED (1)
n. Close and secure cowling.
o. Thoroughly rinse outside of nacelle, external tank and fuselage with fresh water to prevent staining exterior paint system with the compressor wash residue.
WARNING
THOROUGHLY RINSE THE ENGINES, COMPRESSORS AND
PURGE THE BLEED AIR MANIFOLD OF ALL TRACES
OF THE CLEANING SOLUTION. FAILURE TO DO SO
WILL CONTAMINATE THE AIR CONDITIONING SYSTEMS
RESULTING IN BREATHING OF TOXIC VAPORS.
p. Within 30 minutes after compressor water washing, start the engines and operate at NORMAL ground idle for a minimum of five minutes. Start all engines off the GTC/APU or MA-1A start cart and as soon as the STARTER button/switch is released, close the engine bleed air valve. After engine dry out period (3 minutes) operate each engine’s anti-icing for 1 minute to purge, then open the engine bleed air valve and operate the wing and empennage anti-icing for a maximum of 30 seconds. This will purge the manifold so as not to contaminate the air conditioning systems.
q. Operate flight deck and cargo compartment air conditioning units for minimum of (4) four minutes.
Cycle temperature control valves to hot and back to cold while operating air conditioning units.
2. Record maintenance action by completing appropriate sign-off, adding pertinent remarks.
