About this file
This document contains questions and answers regarding the solicitation for the Salt Gulch Bridge project. The project involves bridge abutment repair and replacement of approximately 20 culverts along Salt Gulch Bridge in Siskiyou County, California. Key work elements include drilled shaft construction, a temporary bridge support structure, structural concrete, and corrugated metal pipe culverts ranging in size from 36 to 96 inches. Excavated material from riprap and culvert installation is estimated to be usable onsite or at other culvert replacement locations within the project limits. The engineer's estimate for the project is between $1 million and $2 million. Construction must be completed between August 2020 and late October/early November 2020. Plans and specifications for the project are available from the U.S. Department of Transportation Federal Highway Administration.

Questions and Answers during Advertisement for CA FS 1038(1), Salt Gulch Bridge
July 8, 2020
Questions Answers 1 Are we allowed to draft water from run off in the area of the project?
No
2 What other water access for fire protection, dust and construction is available for the project?
Sites for water drafting will be designated by the Forest Service and agreed to by the contractor.
3 Regarding the excavated material related to the rip rap installation; can we grade it in the area adjacent to the work? Is there a location near the job site that we can place the material?
Do we need to haul all excavated material off site?
It is estimated the excavated material can be graded into the adjacent work area and roadway bench and used on adjacent culvert replacement sites within the project limits if Option X and Option Y are awarded.
Removal of waste material will not be measured for payment and is included in the cost of the culvert pipe.
4 If we have to haul the material off site, how will this material be paid for? I do not see it as a subsidiary to rip rap or culvert installation.
Removal of waste material will not be measured for payment and is included in the cost of the culvert pipe.
5 Location 46N50 8.28 seems to require fill. We assume the cut below the fill will not render enough suitable material. Should there be a pay item for this? Is there a location near the project where fill material can be obtained? Can we build the fill with aggregate base?
Roadway bench excavation and embankment construction associated with culvert replacement is not measured and is included in the cost of the culvert pipe.
It is estimated the material required for filling over the culvert and constructing the roadway bench slope can be obtained from excavation for the 42” culvert, riprap excavation and/or from other culvert replacement sites.
No, the slope cannot be constructed and paid for as aggregate base. The slopes are required to revegetate.
6 Drawing RG3163-B (Sheet S2) references Existing Bridge Plans RG1397 “Salt Gulch Bridge over Horse Creek on Horse Creek Road and 46N500067 “Salt Gulch Bridge Repair”. Can those plans be made available to assist bidders with their estimation of the magnitude of “Temporary Support Structure” that will be required assuming that both lateral and longitudinal stability will need to be considered (in addition to the unfactored vertical dead load provided) prior to removing the existing supports?
See Amendment A002.
