About this file
This is a Material Ordering Data document for MIL-DTL-1222, specifying requirements for socket head cap screws procured under military specifications.
The document establishes ordering requirements for K-monel socket head cap screws per NSTM S9086-CJ-STM010 Chapter 75 Rev 5. The specified fastener is a Socket Head Cap Screw, Type II, Grade 500, with dimensions of .250 inch size and 2.250 inches in length, featuring 20UNRC-3A thread series and class 3A fit. The fasteners are intended for general, high-temperature, high-strength, and corrosive environment applications requiring high reliability, including elevated temperature service, seawater immersion, salt air/marine environments, high preload conditions, and high shock loading scenarios. The procurement approach is to acquire commercial off-the-shelf fasteners with added inspections to verify reliability requirements. Cut or ground threads are not permitted. No self-locking element is required. Identification markings shall comply with NSTM specifications, with Level I alloy steel socket head capscrews marked "A574" or alternatively "STM." Chemical analysis, mechanical property testing, decarburization testing, and magnetic permeability testing are not required. The Additional Data Requirements specify the fastener configuration as a nickel-aluminum (NiCual) screw complying with MIL-DTL-1222 Type 2 and QQ-N-286 specifications.

6.1 Intended use. Fasteners meeting this specification are intended for general, high temperature, high strength and corrosive environment applications where a high degree of reliability is required.
It is designed to be used to acquire commercial off-the-shelf fasteners with added inspections to verify the high degree of reliability required. Fastener types and grades have been selected to meet diverse applications which include: elevated temperatures, immersion in sea water, salt air/marine environments, high preloads and high shock loadings.
