About this file

This is a Material Ordering Data document for MIL-DTL-1222, a federal specification for high-reliability fasteners. The document specifies the procurement of K-monel socket head capscrews and related fasteners designed for general, high-temperature, high-strength, and corrosive environment applications where elevated reliability is required. Applications include elevated temperatures, immersion in seawater, salt air/marine environments, high preloads, and high shock loadings. The specification references MIL-DTL-1222J, dated 08 DEC 2020, as the controlling general specification.

The specific fastener ordered is a socket head cap screw with the following specifications: Type II, Grade 500, nickel aluminum material (NICUAL), 0.250-inch diameter, 2.250 inches long, with 20UNRC-3A thread series and class of fit 3A. Cut or ground threads are not permitted. Identification markings shall comply with NSTM S9086-CJ-STM-010 Chapter 75 Revision 5, paragraph 075-3.2.2.1.1, requiring Level I alloy steel socket head capscrews to be marked "A574," with "STM" marking also acceptable. No self-locking element is required, chemical analysis is not required, and mechanical property test results, decarburization testing, and magnetic permeability testing are not required. The document references QQ-N-286 for material specifications and was prepared by Code C/127.2.

6.1 Intended use. Fasteners meeting this specification are intended for general, high temperature, high strength and corrosive environment applications where a high degree of reliability is required.

It is designed to be used to acquire commercial off-the-shelf fasteners with added inspections to verify the high degree of reliability required. Fastener types and grades have been selected to meet diverse applications which include: elevated temperatures, immersion in sea water, salt air/marine environments, high preloads and high shock loadings.
