INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS

PIPING INSTALLATION:

1. Install piping as shown on the layout drawing. Include unions and shut-off valves on the inlet and outlet of each softener. Also, include a shut-off valve for each injector provided with the system. It is recommended that a union be installed in each softener drain-line to facilitate cleaning the backwash flow control.

2. Do not reduce drain-line pipe size. Do not install a shut off valve in the drain-line. Provide an air gap in the drain line in accordance with local codes (minimum four (4) pipe diameters).

3. If your system has a water meter thoroughly read the meter instructions manual located in the back of this manual before installing any water meters or flow sensors,. Water meters typically must be installed in a particular manner (i.e. horizontal, plane or with recommend pipe lengths) to function properly.

4. After the piping has been completed, make sure to close all isolation valves.

NOTES:

• Install the piping conforming to federal, provincial, and local codes.

• Union or flanges are recommended at the control valve’s inlet, outlet, and drain connections

• To enhance the monitoring of the system’s performance sample valves and pressure gauges are be installed at the inlet and outlet piping to each control valve.

• If distance of drain line is over a 10 ft. vertical or 25 ft. horizontal run, increase drain line one pipe size over that provided on the control valve.

• Do not make a direct connection to the drain. Provide an air gap of at least four times the diameter of the pipe to conform to sanitation codes and to permit observation of the flow.

• It is not recommended that an overhead or a long horizontal drain run be used. The increased backpressure will cause problems when drawing brine.

SOFTENER LOADING

Do not begin loading until you have confirmed all of the required media is on site.

Locate your unit on the Specification Table for the correct amount of gravel and resin per tank and separate quantities.

Before loading, visually check the lower distributor for shipping damage. All radial arms and baskets strainers are in place and pointing downward. Tighten any loose laterals. Do not load tank if there is damage is evident. Call the fac-tory if any damage is observed.

Slowly open the inlet valve and fill the tank half way or as full as possible with water. There might be a flow of water to drain.

Care should be exercised in the loading of the gravel in order to insure that the distributors are not damaged. The equipment provided has a PVC lower distributor system.

INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS

GRAVEL LOADING

1. Slowly and gently pour the gravel marked for the mineral tank into the unit.

2. Drain the tank down until the gravel and water levels are the same.

3. Carefully level the gravel before loading the resin.

RESIN LOADING

1. Reopen the inlet valve and fill the tank to1/3 to 1/2 full of water.

2. Pour the quantity of resin marked for the tank in through the top opening.

3. Reopen the inlet valve and fill the tank with water to the top access opening.

4. Close and secure the top access opening.

5. Open inlet valve and continue to fill the tank with water until it is fully pressurized.

BRINE TANK INSTALLATION

1. The brine tank should be installed on a smooth level surface. If none is available, the tank should be placed on a smooth piece of exterior plywood and leveled by placing shims underneath the plywood.

2. Load the two layers of gravel 3/4x1/2 and 1/4x1/8 and level. Make sure the brine draw pipe located in the tank is as vertical as possible.

3. Load the brine tank with the recommended amount of salt. Do not fill the tank past half way with salt.

4. Check the Specification Table for the float setting for your particular system. (Units are shipped with the float set for maximim salting). If the setting is incorrect,a djsut the stop collars to the proper setting,

5. Connect the brine valve to the brine injector. Make sure the pipe size matches the size of the transfer valve (i.e. 1” valve use 1” pipe).

6. Open the manual injector feed water valve and allow the brine tank to fill with water. To speed this process the tank can be filled with a garden hose to about 2” below the float. The tank will continue to fill until the float rises and shuts of the flow.

7. Adjust the counter weight to insure that the brine valve arm rides up and down.

8. Place cover back on the brine tank (if supplied).

Note:

In the process of making brine for the first regeneration, the solution volume will increase (one gallon of water will be

1.2 gallons of brine). The final level of the liquid will be several inches above the platform.

START-UP INSTRUCTIONS

PLC PROGESSIVE CONTROLLER

Note: Read the controls description section located in this manual before proceeding.

With all piping and installation complete, and the mineral in the tank, proceed as follow:

1. Open the manual by-pass valve. The manual inlet and outlet valves are to remain closed.

2. Connect the power to the PLC controller. This operator interface display will light up. Advance the operator interface to the Main Screen. The brine tank should start to refill from the brine pump skid.

3. Open the remote stager enclosure cover on Unit 1 and manually rotate the stager to the #1 (backwash) position. The stager motor will rotate back to the #4 (service) position. This is done to confirm the controller’s homing signal is operational.

4. Manually advance the operator interface to the Presets Screen. Verify the cycle time and K factor are correct for your unit size. Change if required.

5. Manually advance the operator interface to the Flow Rate Presets for

Progressive Flow. Verify the flow presets are correct for your unit using the flow chart in this manual. Change if required.

6. Manually advance the operator interface to the Operator Control 1

Manually Start/Advance regeneration.

7. Advance Unit 1 to the backwash step. The unit 1 stager should rotate to the step 1 (backwash) position.

8. Slowly open the manual inlet supply valve. Do not open fully. Full flow of water could cause loss of media. Continue to fill slowly until all air is expelled and only water flows to the drain. Water will enter from the bottom of the resin tank as air is expelled from the top drain.

If the system is supplied with an air vent make sure that the valve is open during this process.

9. When only water flows to the drain and out the air vent (if applicable), open the manual inlet valve all of the way. Backwash until the water looks clean when caught in a container.

10. Advance Unit 1 to the brine/slow rinse step. The Unit 1 stager should rotate to the step 2 brine/slow rinse position. There will be a slow flow to the drain.

11. While the Unit 1 is in the Brine/Slow Rinse position, check the level in the brine tank. The level should be dropping at a slow rate (approximately 2” per minute).

12. Advance Unit 1 to the Fast Rinse position. The Unit 1 stager should rotate to the step 3 (Fast rinse) position. There will be a high flow of water to the drain. Allow the water to flow to the drain until clear.

During this time, the brine tank will fill with saturated brined until it reaches the refill point.

13. Advance Unit 1 to the service position. The unit 1 stager should rotate to the step 4 Service position. There will be no flow of water to the drain.

14. Perform steps 3-13 to the other units.

15. Close the manual by-pass valve and open all outlet valves fully. The system is now in service.

16. The amount of brine used is controlled by the level transmitter mounted on the brine tank.

0% = empty 100% = 50" 10% = brine draw cut off 40% = refill point for minimum salting 300 gallons 90% = refill point for maximum salting 900 gallons The system is shipped set at maximum salting

SEQUENCE OF OPERATION

TWIN WATER SOFTENER WITH MEASURING TANK

MODEL MHC 4800-4

S/N EP-110176-01

Note: 1. The TWIN water softener is designed for one tank in service and one tank in standby or regeneration. The water softener tanks will be placed in service or standby based on total water flow demand..

2. The water softener system is designed to use saturated brine from an existing brine tank. A new brine pump system is provided which will pump saturated brine from the brine tank to the new water softeners. The saturated brine will be diluted at the water softeners.

5. Each water softener has a flow sensor mounted on the soft water outlet piping. The flow sensor will indicate flow and totalize soft water produced.

6. The water softener has been provided with a brine measuring tank, refill valve, brine draw valve and level transmitter. The quantity of brine used is adjustable using the screens on the water softener PLC screen.

7. A saturated brine pump skid has been provided with two brine pumps. The brine pumps are twin alternating design.

8. All regeneration times, batch volumes and alarm set points are field adjustable.

REGENERATION SEQUENCE OF OPERATION

Note: This description is for one unit and typical for the other units

1. Service

Valves Open: FV-1, FV-2 The inlet water passes through the service inlet valve FV-1 then passes through the resin bed inside the tank and exits through the service outlet valve FV-2 The duration of the service step is determined by the quantity of water that is passed through the resin measured by the flow totalizer..

2. Backwash Valves Open: FV-3, FV-4 The inlet water enters the resin bed through the backwash valve FV-4 at lower resin level upward to expand and clean the entire resin bed and than exits from the top of the tank through backwash outlet valve FV-3.

Time duration is 15 minutes

3. Brine Draw Valves Open: FV-5, FV-6, FV-7 The saturated brine is drawn from the brine injector . The saturated brine is diluted to a 10-12 % solution by the injector and than passes through the top of the resin bed through the dilute brine valve FV-5. The waste brine exits the bottom of the resin bed through the fast rinse valve FV-6.

The brine tank refill valve FV-8 will be held shut through this entire step.

Nancrede Engineering Company, Inc.

The time duration of the brine draw step is determined by the quantity of brine used. The level transmitter in the brine tank is calibrated in percent full.

0% = empty 100% = 50" 10% = brine draw cut off 40% = refill point for minimum salting 300 gallons 90% = refill point for maximum salting 900 gallons The system is shipped set at maximum salting

4. Slow Rinse

Valves Open; FV5, FV-6 The slow rinse water is drawn through the brine injector through the dilute brine inlet valve FV-5 and than passes through the top of the resin bed. The waste brine exits the bottom of the resin bed through the fast rinse valve FV-6.

The brine tank refill valve FV-8 will be held shut through this entire step.

Time duration is 40 minutes

5. Fast Rinse

Valves Open: FV-1, FV-6 The fast rinse water enters the resin bed through the inlet service valve FV-1and then passes through the top of the resin bed. The remaining traces of brine exits the bottom of the resin bed through rinse outlet valve FV6.

The brine tank refill valve FV-8 will be allowed to open at this step.

Time duration is 12 minutes

BRINE TRANSFER STARTER MCC-1 CONTROL

The MCC contains the two starters for the two brine transfer pumps. One pump is for the condensate polisher system and one is for the softener system.

Each pump has a Hand Off Auto Selector switch on the front of the panel.

Auto – in this position the pump will transfer brine under PLC control. If a unit is not in a brine step the brine will be allowed to be transferred until the level in the brine tank gets to the high stop level. If the level in the brine maker gets low the transfer will also be stopped.

Off- the pump is forced off

Hand – the pump is forced on

Reference wiring diagram EP11-176-08-03 for wiring details.

ELECTRICAL CONTROLS OPERATION

General-the main control panel (MCP) contains the programmable logic controller (PLC) and the operator interface (OIT). The system is controlled by the PLC. Operator intervention and control along with some program set point access is through the OIT. The PLC controls the system so that one or more units will be online (in service) based on flow demand. If flow is low then only one unit will be online. If flow increases past the set point for bringing the second unit online then the second unit will come online. When the flow increases above the set point for bringing the third unit online then the third unit will come online. As flow decreases, the additional units that were brought online will be taken offline to standby status. A unit will be automatically regenerated when its gallon batch throughput set point has been reached. A unit can also be manually forced into regeneration by using a pushbutton on the OIT.

A regeneration lockout is built into the logic so that only one unit can be in a regeneration at a time.

Brine tank refill- This system draws ready-made brine from a brine maker. When either unit is not in the brine draw/slow rinse step the system will allow the brine measuring tank to be filled. A brine transfer pump will move the brine from the brine maker to the brine measuring tank.

SCREEN CHANGES

This screen can be used to change to a different screen. This screen allows the user to scroll through the list of screens and choose which one they want.

MANUAL REGENERATION START/ADVANCE

This is the main screen used for manual operator regeneration start and advance. It is mainly used to manually start and advance a unit through it regeneration steps. Once a manual regeneration start is begun, regeneration cycle timing is automatic and the unit will advance itself automatically through the regeneration steps.

Along the top row are three buttons. These allow the operator to manually start a regeneration on any of the units.

Once in regeneration this button also allows the operator to manually advance the unit to its next regeneration cycle. Only one unit can be sent into regeneration at a time.

There is a 3 second delay on these buttons to verify operator intent.

Once a button is activated the operator will be locked out from activating the button again for 20 seconds in order to allow the stager time to rotate to its next position. This lockout is indicated by the text “pb lo” (pushbutton lockout) flashing.

If another unit is currently in a regeneration the program will not allow another unit to be manually sent into regeneration via its button. There is no memory of this button being depressed if another unit is already in regeneration.

Brine Tank Level Indicator- to the right of the screen is the real-time level of the brine tank. Use this to monitor the level in the brine measuring tank.

SYSTEM RESET

This screen allows the system to be reset or allows access to the configuration of the

OIT.

System Reset-this button when depressed for a minimum of 5 continuous seconds will reset the system. This will take any unit that is currently in regeneration out of regeneration to service or standby.

Unit A will be set as primary and B as secondary.

Config Access- this allows the operator to go to the OIT configuration menu. This has already been preset and access to this should not be necessary.

TOTALIZERS SCREEN

This screen is used to monitor the amount of service flow that has passed for any unit.

The totalizers will count the amount of gallons that have passed up to 1 trillion before resetting automatically. There is a 3 second delay before the totalizer value will reset to verify operator intent.

ALARM BANNER SCREEN

An alarm banner will occur if: either of the stagers in the LCP’s fails to rotate home, if the brine pump fails to start when needed, if the brine level exceeds the high level limit, if the brine tank level exceeds the low level limit or if the brine tank override time elapses.

Press the ACK button to acknowledge the alarm.

ALARM HISTORY SCREEN

When an alarm occurs a date and time stamp of the alarm will be stored here.

MISCELLANEOUS:

STAGER OPERATION

Stagers-each stager is located in its own enclosure on the individual units themselves.

They operate the diaphragm vales on the unit. The stager has multiple ports on it to pressurize and vent diaphragm valves in order to open and close them. Pressure to a valve opens the valve.

A vent to a valve allows the valve to open. The stager has 4 numbers on its indexing wheel inside of the enclosure. Each position represents a different Regeneration cycle. 4= service/standby, 1= backwash, 2= brine/slow rinse, 3= fast rinse.

If for some reason power is disrupted the stager can be manually rotated to the different positions in order to manually regenerate the unit.

Stager homing- if for some reason the stager gets out of sync with the plc the plc will drive the stager back to its service #4 position. This can occur if someone manually rotates the stager out of service while there is power to the unit. This is designed to correct the situation if someone happens to tamper with the stagers.

5. Sensor Wiring

Technical Notes

• Use 2-conductor shielded cable for cable extensions.

• Cable shield must be maintained through cable splice.

• Refer to your instrument manual for specific wiring details.

4. Standard Sensor Installation

1. Lubricate the sensor O-rings with a silicone lubricant (e.g.

GE silicone compound #G632 or equivalent). Do not use any petroleum based lubricant that will attack the O-rings.

2. Using an alternating/twisting motion, lower the sensor into the fitting, making sure the installation arrows on the black cap are pointing in the direction of flow, see Figure A.

Figure B

Figure A

3. Engage one thread of the sensor cap then turn the sensor until the alignment tab is seated in the fitting notch. Hand tighten the sensor cap. DO NOT use any tools on the sensor cap or the cap threads and/or fitting flange threads will be damaged, see Figure B.

2. Location of Fitting

Recommended sensor upstream/downstream mounting requirements

3. Sensor Mounting Position

• Horizontal pipe runs: Mount sensor in the upright (0°) position for best performance. Mount at a maximum of 45° when air bubbles are present (pipe must be full). Do not mount on the bottom of the pipe when sediments are present.

• Vertical pipe runs: Mount sensor in any orientation. Upward flow is preferred to ensure full pipe.

6. Rotor Replacement Procedure

1. To remove the rotor, insert a small screwdriver between the rotor and the ear of the sensor.

2. Twist the screwdriver blade to flex the ear outward enough to remove one end of the rotor and pin.

DO NOT flex the ear any more than necessary! If it breaks, the sensor cannot be repaired.

3. Install the new rotor by inserting one tip of the pin into the hole, then flex the opposite ear back enough to slip rotor into place.

7. K-Factors A K-Factor is the number of pulses a sensor will generate for each engineering unit of fluid which passes the sensor. K-factors for water are listed below in U.S. gallons and liters. For example, in a 1-inch PVC pipe, the 515 paddlewheel generates 174.67 pulses per gallon of water passing the rotor. K-factors are listed for pipes up to 12 inches. For pipes over 12 inches, consult your +GF+ SIGNET distributor.

Metal Diaphragm Valves AquaMatic® Product Specifications

Metal Diaphragm Valves

■ Features and Options

■ Low Pressure Loss ....................................The AquaMatic Y-pattern diaphragm valve features a large seat opening and high lift-disc for higher flow rates at a lower pressure loss than other comparable valves

■ Positive Control .........................................A separate valve flow and control chambers permits positive sealing without springs. The optional spring-assist open feature is available for low pressure and self-draining applications.

■ Cost Effective .............................................The AquaMatic is a cost-effective solution both in initial cost, as well as lifetime maintenance expenses.

■ Long Diaphragm Life ...............................Separate diaphragm chambers protects the diaphragm from the flow stream, while allowing the valve to be serviced in-line.

■ Durable Construction................................The valve is constructed of cast iron, brass, stainless steel and Nitrile elastomer components, giving an unparalleled service life of three years or longer depending on the application’s environment.

■ Design and application engineering service ■ Optional adjustable flow rate control
