EXAMPLE INSPECTION CHECKLIST

MECHANICAL, HEATING SYSTEM

1. Adequate access and 30 inches of work space on the control side are provided; refer to IMC and IFGC Section 306.

2. If located in under-floor space, the furnace is placed on a concrete slab at least 3 inches above the adjoining grade; IMC Section 304.9 and IFGC Section 305.7.

3. A gas fired furnace is not located in a sleeping room, bathroom, toilet room, storage closet or surgical room (unless it is direct vented), and does not obtain combustion air from these areas.

Requirements and exceptions are listed in the IMC and IFGC Section 303.3.

4. If located in a garage, the furnace is raised at least 18 inches above the floor; IMC Section 304.3 and IFGC Section 305.3.

5. Return air inlet is located at least 10 feet away measured in path of travel from the firebox or draft diverter of any appliance within the same enclosed or confined space; IMC Section 918.6, Item 6 and IFGC Section 618.5, item 6.

6. Condition of venting system is inspected, including the furnace equipment area and roof termination. (Depending on these observations, a visual inspection of the vent in the attic may be required.) IFGC Section 503.5.6.3.

7. Common vent — If furnace is a fan-assisted Category I appliance, the furnace vent and connector comply with Table 504.3(1) or Table 504.3(2) of the IFGC, and installed with a 4-inch double wall wye to accommodate a future water heater replacement. IFGC Sections 504.3 and 504.3.9, and the May 1999 Mechanical Committee meeting minutes.

8. Single vent — If furnace is a fan-assisted Category I appliance, the furnace vent complies with IFGC Table 504.2(1) or Table 504.2(2); IFGC Section 504.2.

9. If vented through a masonry chimney, the flue is lined with a chimney lining system specifically listed for use with the appliance; IFGC Sections 504.2.9 and 504.3.20

10. Vent connector rise, clearance and support are adequate and of proper material; IFGC Sections 503.10; 504.2.10; 504.2.11; 504.3.2; 504.3.3; 504.3.11; and 504.3.12.

11. Combustion air is adequate; IFGC Section 304.

12. Gas shut-off valve is within 6 feet of total developed length from the appliance gas valve and gas connector is of approved material; IFGC Sections 409.5 and 411 . An existing listed appliance connector cannot be reused; IFGC Sections 301.4 and 305.1.

13. Gas fired furnace is not located in an enclosed room with a clothes dryer unless make up air is provided; IFGC Section 304.4 .
