SECTION 08 01 81 MAINTENANCE GLASS GLAZING

REPAIR OF EXISTING WINDOWS

REPLACING INDIVIDUAL GLASS PANES

PART 1 GENERAL

1.1 SECTION INCLUDES

A. Flat glass materials.

B. Glazing accessories.

C. Davis-Bacon wage classifications for work under this section.

1.2 RELATED SECTIONS

A. Service Contract Act wage determinations.

1.4 DEFINITIONS

A. See Section C definitions.

1.5 WAGE/SALARY POSITION DESCRIPTIONS

A. Technical work under this Section would fall under the “carpenter” position classification.

B. Routine support and runner (“gopher”) work for this Section would fall under the “labor” position classification.

1.6 SYSTEM DESCRIPTION

A. All exterior windows except one consist of approximately 10” x12” single pane glass mounted in wooden mullions and glazed into place with standard glazing.

B. One window is a modern sliding aluminum framed wind. This window requires replacement of one vacuum sealed double pane.

C. Design requirements:

1. Use single pane of not less than ¼” thickness clear glass.

2. Match existing on modern aluminum pane.

1.7 SUBMITTALS

A. Manufacturer's data sheets on each product to be used, including:

1. Preparation instructions and recommendations.

2. Storage and handling requirements and recommendations.

3. Installation methods.

B. Verification Samples:

1. Flat Glass Materials: One full sized pane of glass or one pan of cut glass sized for replacement.

C. Warranty documents specified herein.

1.8 QUALITY ASSURANCE

A. See project Quality Assurance and Control Section(s).

1.9 DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING

A. Store products in manufacturer's unopened packaging until ready for installation.

B. Store and dispose of all chemicals, and materials contaminated with repair chemicals, in accordance with the requirements of local authorities having

C. Do not dispose of waste contaminated with the repair chemicals on Government property or in Government trash receptacles of any kind.

1.10 PROJECT CONDITIONS

A. Ensure all work for this Section is performed under environmental conditions

(temperature, humidity, and ventilation) within limits recommended by manufacturer for optimum results. Do not install products under environmental conditions outside manufacturer's absolute limits.

B. Installation of glass products at ambient air temperature below 50 degrees F (10 degrees C) is prohibited.

C. Field Measurements: Check field measurements against estimated dimensions prior to fabrication of glass panes.

1.11 WARRANTY

A. Provide one-year warranty to include replacement or repair of replaced glass panes exhibiting seal failure or fracture not directly related to normal wear & tear, pest animal/rodent intrusion, owner abuse.

1.12 EXTRA MATERIALS

A. Supply two of the small plain windowpanes for use in older windows.

PART 2 PRODUCTS

2.1 MANUFACTURERS

A. Any manufacturer is acceptable so far as requirements for thickness, quality and clarity are met.

2.2 MATERIALS

A. Clear Uncoated Float Glass:

1. Description: Standard optically clear, uncolored glass.

2. Minimum Glass Thickness: ¼” inch.

B. Glazing Compound

1. Glazing compound shall be a compound specifically created for glazing windows (such as “DAP 33” or the like) and not a multi-purpose or painters caulk type of material.

C. Glass Seating Compound

1. Glass Seating Compound shall be a siliconized acrylic latex caulk in the “35 year” warranty class or better.

PART 3 EXECUTION

3.1 EXAMINATION

A. Verify size of openings for glazing prior to cutting glass panes.

B. Verify that glazing channels and recesses are clean and free of obstructions, that weeps are clear, and that channels and recesses are ready for glazing.

3.2 PREPARATION

A. Clean contact surfaces to receive sealant with solvent; wipe dry.

B. Seal porous glazing channels and recesses with primer or sealer compatible with substrate.

C. Prime surfaces to receive sealant in accordance with sealant manufacturer's instructions.

3.3 INSTALLATION

A. Install in accordance with manufacturer's instructions.

B. Install sealants in accordance with sealant manufacturers' instructions.

1. When seating glass in window pane, use a bead of siliconized caulk against the wood surface to mount the glass instead of glazing compound.

3.4 CLEANING

A. Remove glazing materials from finish surfaces.

B. Remove labels after glass installation is complete.

C. Clean glass surfaces and adjacent surfaces.

3.5 PROTECTION

A. Protect installed products until completion of project.

B. Repair or replace damaged products before Substantial Completion.
