SECTION 07 01 40.23 MAINTENANCE OF SIDING
REPAIR OF EXTERIOR SIDING
INCLUDING SOFFIT, EAVES AND GABLE ENDS
PART 1 GENERAL
1.1 SECTION INCLUDES
A. Exterior vertical surfaces repair excluding foundation concrete but including foundation vents and crawlspace accesses.
B. Materials methods and products for use in repairs under this section.
C. Davis-Bacon wage classification(s) for work under this section.
1.2 RELATED SECTIONS
A. Davis-Bacon Act determinations for this contract.

1.4 DEFINITIONS
A. See Definitions under Description and Statement of Work.
1.5 WAGE/SALARY POSITION DESCRIPTIONS
A. Technical work under this Section would fall under the “carpenter” position classification for exterior work and interior work.
B. Routine support and runner (“gopher”) work for this Section would fall under the “labor” position classification.
1.6 SYSTEM DESCRIPTION
A. Exterior siding is lap board siding placed horizontally in 8” or 10” widths on exterior B. Interior walls are lap board in narrower widths, in some cases with drywall or veneer paneling placed over it. In one case, only drywall over studs is used where an addition was added.
C. Soffits, eaves and fascia are typically dimensional lumber varying from 6” width to 10” or so width and approximately 1” in nominal thickness.
D. Gables ends are same as exterior siding with some dimensional lumber framing around vents.
1.7 SUBMITTALS
A. Manufacturer's data sheets on each product to be used, including:
1. Preparation instructions and recommendations.
2. Storage, use and handling requirements and recommendations.
3. Installation methods.
B. Verification Samples:
1. Samples of actual proposed lumber or synthetic lumber repair products shall be provided to the
COR for approval prior to their use.
2. Samples of all Filler products in a cured or final state shall be provided by the contractor for approval by the COR prior to the installation or use on this project.
C. Warranty:
1. Where manufacturer supplies warranty information in a separate document or on the product packaging, the Contractor shall separate the warranty/guarantee information and provide to the
COR.
2. The Contractor shall not provide empty or partially empty product containers as documentation of the warranty unless it is imprinted directly on the package itself and cannot be removed without destroying the information. In such case only one of the packages shall be presented for each product so labeled regardless of how many containers of that product are used.

1.8 QUALITY ASSURANCE
A. See project Quality Assurance and Control Section.
B. This Section shall not be used for any structural repairs. If the Contractor suspects a repair may be structural in nature they should stop that work immediately and consult with the COR.
1.9 DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING
A. Store products in manufacturer's unopened packaging until ready for installation.
B. Store and dispose of all chemicals, and materials contaminated with repair chemicals, in accordance with the requirements of local authorities having jurisdiction. The Lassen national Forest uses California landfills to dispose of waste. It is against the Law in California to dispose of liquid or semi-liquid chemical (non-food) wastes in California landfills.
C. DO NOT dispose of waste contaminated with the repair chemicals on Government property or in Government trash receptacles of any kind.
1.10 PROJECT CONDITIONS
A. Ensure, prior to application, that environmental conditions (temperature, humidity, and ventilation) are within limits recommended by manufacturer for optimum results. Do not install products under environmental conditions outside manufacturer's absolute limits.
B. Environmental Requirements: Placing fillers when ambient air temperatures may drop below 40° F (10° C) at any time during initial set is prohibited.
1.11 WARRANTY
A. Provide one year warranty to include replacement or repair of work under this section exhibiting failure not directly related to normal wear & tear, pest animal/rodent intrusion, owner abuse.
1.12 EXTRA MATERIALS
A. DO NOT leave extra or excess chemicals or repair materials of any kind on-site after the repairs are complete for any reason.
PART 2 PRODUCTS
2.1 MATERIALS
A. Material/Product Restrictions
1. No expanding foam product shall be used for any repair. Expanding foam may be used to provide insulation or a working surface under repairs but shall not allow a hard repair or sealant to be less than the thickness of the repaired material nor shall expanding foam be used in lieu of proper reinforcement. The Contractor shall obtain written approval from the COR on a per-use basis for any and every use of expanding foam prior to its application.
2. Fiberglass insulation may not be used as a repair product on exterior repairs.
B. Filler(s)
1. Medium and larger Repairs shall use UV resistant resin or putty fillers (such as Bondo Body Filler or Evercoat Universal Filler), synthetic wood plugs (such as plugs made from resin boards like Trex or any other brand of similar product), or high resin fast drying/curing wood putty (DAP Plastic Wood, or other heavy duty reinforced filler).
2. Putty and resin type fillers, shall be quick dry or cure and shall be drillable, sandable and paintable when cured but is not required to offer any structural strength. Fillers and putties drying or curing in 30 minutes or less for initial set will be considered as fast drying/curing.
C. Sealant(s)
1. Siliconized acrylic caulk (35+ year class) may be used on Small Repairs as noted in Part 3 of this section. Caulk must be at least a “35 year” warranty class of siliconized acrylic latex caulk.

1. Moisture proof and aesthetic coating applied to all repairs as part of this Section shall consist of Latex Paint as specified in Section C.
E. Patch Reinforcement(s)
1. Fiberglass auto-body repair cloth or ¼” or ⅛" metal mesh may be used to reinforce larger repairs or make repairs rodent resistant. Fillers or sealant will still be required to make repairs leak proof.
Fiberglass insulation and expanding foam may not be used as repair reinforcement or moisture-proofing on exterior repairs.
PART 3 EXECUTION
3.1 EXAMINATION
A. Ensure selected repair product, methods and materials are compatible.
1. Verify that all repair surfaces are compatible with the product manufacturer’s recommended compatible materials for use with that particular product prior to application.
B. Ensure that temperature humidity and sunlight exposure are within limits of manufacturer’s recommendation prior to application of any product.
3.2 PREPARATION
A. Ensure that all surfaces are prepared according to manufacturer’s recommendations prior to application of repair materials.
3.3 INSTALLATION
A. Install repair materials in accordance with manufacturer's instructions to fill and seal all exterior vertical surface penetrations.
B. Installed repair must be at least as thick as the parent material, but not less than ½” thick unless not allowed by intervening existing structure. Repairs in concrete, for the purposes of this section only, are not required to be more approximately 1” thick.
C. Repairs shall be smooth finished, continuous and flush with surrounding surface, rodent resistant, and proof against water infiltration and UV damage when complete.
3.4 CLEANING
A. Remove repair materials from finish surfaces, except where feathered onto existing surface to provide uniform, smooth transition to repaired surface.
B. Clean all adjacent surfaces of repair material, debris or waste generated during the repair.
C. Remove all debris and extra repair materials from site, including extra coatings also. Dispose of according to local regulations, DO NOT dispose of any chemicals in Government trash receptacles of any kind.
3.5 PROTECTION
A. Protect installed products until completion of project.
B. Repair or replace damaged products before Substantial Completion.
