WITH POTENTIAL FOR CAUSING SIGNIFICANT CUMULATIVE IMPACTS
General Project Schedule & Construction Sequence*
*The information in this section is not intended to and shall not supersede the approved schedule and milestone/completion dates for the project.
The project is scheduleted to advertise in July of 2026 with work expected to commence the following spring and last 2 full construction seasons.
There are no critical locations that require specific sequencing. Work near I-295 ramps will require short-term detours.
There are typical requirements for signal replacements relating to durations of switchover from existing signals to new ones.
Route 44 is heavily commercial and includes major retail within the project limits to the west of I-295 with limited proximity to residential areas.
Cedar Swamp Road is at the western limit and serves as a connector to residential neighborhoods and Smithfield Schools.
These will be impacted by construction work at the Putnam Pike/Cedar Swamp Road intersection.
The Smithfield Fire Department is located well west of the project limits and should be notified. There is no need for a a detour for emergency serivces.
To the east of I-295 the area is heavily residential and has fewer lanes. Johnston Fire Station No. 2 will be in the middle of the work areas but access will be maintained.
There is one pre-school in the work zone that will be affected by roadway and signal work at Collins Ave/Norris Ave. The nearest elementary school has ready access points and should not be affected by construction operations.

Putnam Pike provides access to various shopping centers, access to I-295, Providence College and other schools, and the city of Providence.
Projected travel delays and queues have been estimated for all short-term closures listed in this TMP.
Public awareness campaigns should be implemented prior to and during each roadway closure to reduce peak hour traffic volumes by encouraging the use of alternate routes and adjusting commuting times.
Signalized intersections include:
