About this file

The document summarizes meeting minutes and questions from a site visit for a federal contract solicitation to replace a failing water well for Death Valley National Park. The site visit covered four well locations at the park including the old well and saline well proposed for demolition, the failing well 1A and related reverse osmosis plant proposed for replacement, and two additional potable water pumphouses. Key questions asked by the contractor and answered by the National Park Service staff in attendance regarded confirming the power would be deactivated before well demolition, the handling of the concrete vault and plumbing during well demolition, how to connect new wiring from the replacement well to the existing infrastructure, and specifying the material of existing drop pipes. The solicitation aims to replace the failing well to ensure the continued supply of potable water to park facilities.

At 8:15 AM review of the project areas began.

-The "Old Well" (to be destroyed) was the first location visited. Mr. Reddy did not have any questions.

-The "Saline Well" (to be destroyed) was the second location visited. Mr. Reddy had the following questions:

Q.1 Will the existing power drop next to the "Saline Well" (less than 10 feet away) that presently is energized be de-energized at the time the contractor comes onsite to destroy the well?

A.1 NPS response: The Park will have SCE de-energize the power drop prior to the time the contractor comes onsite to destroy the well.

Q.2 Does the NPS want to keep the concrete vault around the "Saline Well" or have it demolished?

A.2 NPS response: The demolition of the concrete vault and the plumbing inside of it is part of the scope of work for destroying the "Saline Well." The metal vault lid is to be salvaged and the Park will retain possession of it. The water meter will be salvaged and the Park will retain possession of it.

-The Failing Well 1 and new Well 1A and RO Plant was the next location visited. Mr. Reddy had the following question:

Q.3 Does new electrical and signal wires need to be run from new Well 1A into the RO plant and to the VFD and PLC?

A.3 NPS response: The new wiring for electrical power and signal cable from new Well 1A can be connected to the existing wiring that presently goes to the existing failing Well 1 that is outside of the RO plant following NEC and manufacturers' recommendations. The existing water meter vault can be used to house the connection points of new wiring to existing wiring.

-The Furnace Creek potable water system's pumphouse #2/#3 was the third location visited. Mr. Reddy had the following question:

Q.4 What is the material of the existing drop pipe?
