Questions Following Site Visit (as of 7/31/2020):

1. Are we cutting all connectors off the sucker rod or do we screw them together?

Response:

The contractor can either cut off connectors on the sucker rod and overlap pieces (welded together) or utilize the threading to connect pieces as long as it doesn't impact the ability to attach the plastic sheeting uniformly.

2. What is considered typical on the print? Everything on the print says typical so we would like to know what typical means.

Definition of TYP (Typical) in Construction

The designation TYP means typical on construction documents. In many instances there are details on the documents that will occur at several different locations, or in several different situations on the construction project.

For example, the top, jamb or sill of a window or door may occur countless times on a large construction project. If this is the case, the detail will be drawn once, and noted as TYP or typical on the documents. If there are deviations to this typical detail, then the documents will indicate the exceptions to the TYP or typical detail and note these differences. This is the main reason why an experienced contractor will understand the large number of pages contained within the contract documents of a large project, due to the many TYP details and drawings.

Architects and engineers do not invent the wheel, every time they design and engineer a structure. In most cases, they look at the ability to identify the details as TYP in as many locations as possible. This focus of the TYP detail allows the architect and engineer more time and money to develop and engineer the specific issues and problems that are unique to this project. It also allows the contractors involved with the project an easier and more efficient opportunity to understand the documents with less issues and problems. Most contractors would prefer architects and engineers to establish TYP details that are repeatedly used on project, after project.

3. What color of building are they recommending outside along with trim work?

Response: Tan or beige to resemble/match the plastic sheeting

4. Would 12” grip strut suffice for the steps?

Specifications for Grating treads for metal stairs can be found in division 05 51 00, page 4, section 2.3.

Grip Strut would be an approved material for the treads, but tread width would be determined when stairways are designed, and manufactured, to meet field conditions.

5. On page L3.2 there is a listed 6” X 16” beam on the catwalk at alley. What does that consist of for the thickness and how it is laid out?

The drawings list a W 6” X 16” Beam which is partially incorrect. It should read W 6 X

16. This denotes an American Wide Flange Beam (W Beam) that has a depth of 6” and a weight of 16 lbs. per foot. Additional information regarding the beams properties can be found at https://www.engineeringtoolbox.com/american-wide-flange-steel-beams-d_1319.html

The W6x16’s at the alley catwalk crossing is a single beam with a post each end centered on the catwalk location. Catwalk section then follows the center support construction for other details.

6. Other than the pre-engineered steel building is the contractor to provide engineering for anything else?

Yes. In addition to the pre-engineered building, see Divisions 5 & 32 for additional engineering requirements.

7. Can you tell us what gets painted and what is galvanized, or can you direct us to where that information is in the specifications?

Painting requirements are in Division 9.

Metal finishes are in Divisions 5 & 32.

Finish requirements can also be identified in the drawings.

8. On tower post. Do they need to have a majestic paint below grade?

Yes, mastic requirement is shown in drawing set, sheet 28, Viewing Platform Plan &

Sections, Section 5

9. What kind of gate hinges would you like? Could we build our own hinge that is greaseable?

Specifications for gate hinges are in Division 32 31 00, page 3, section 2.2 -D -1.

Local manufacturing of hinges is acceptable as long as:

The product meets the above referenced specifications and, The product is submitted for approval in accordance to procedures outlined in division

32 31 00, Section 1.4.

10. What kind of welding certification or job certifications are required for this job? Are years of experience enough?

Response:

Specifications for welding/job certifications, if needed, are defined in each division that addresses welding:

05 50 00 05 51 00 05 52 13 05 53 05 13 34 00 32 31 00

If no specifications are defined for a welding process, then years of experience are sufficient and would be submitted in lieu of an AWS certificate.

11. Do the corral posts get filled with concrete or just the gate posts? If the corral posts are not filled with concrete do you want caps welded on them?

Corral, gate and viewing platform posts get filled with concrete.

See drawing set:

Sheet 16 – Fence Details, Corral Fence A Elevation, Corral Fence A Section, Corral Fence B Section, Sheet 18 – Gate Details, Elevations 1, 2, 3, & 4, Sheet 20 – Viewing Platform Details, Elevation B.

Welded caps are required on posts.
