1. Summary KirK Engineering & Natural Resources (“KirK”) performed groundwater monitoring in Grand Teton National Park in accordance with contract P16PX01327 for 2020. This report summarizes the work performed and analytical results. A copy of the contract is attached as Appendix C.
The work was performed over two periods. The spring sampling took place on May 26 and 27. The fall sampling took place over September 15 through 17.
2. Statement of Purpose This work was performed to fulfill the requirements of contract P16PX01327 for the year 2020.
3. Test Methods and Quality Control Methods The field sampling was performed by KirK personnel. Wells were sampled using a Grundfos submerged VFD pumping system, except in the following cases: where there was less than 18-inches of water in wells, where wells are only accessible by walking in equipment, or where the water level was greater than 100 feet below surface. In these cases, a manual bailer was used. Where a bailer was used it was left in place on a string / rope for future use. In one case only the rope was left because the larger diameter bailer used in that well was removed.
The analytical laboratory reports include a full set of analytical QA/QC to meet certification standards for their methods; these reports can be found in Appendix B.
4. Problems Encountered & Proposed Resolutions Three wells in both the spring and fall were unable to be sampled (Table 1).
Table 1. Well which could not be sampled Site Well Issue Sampling
Lupine Meadows MW-2 (LMW) Well is obstructed and not able to be sampled
Spring
Lupine Meadows MW-2 (LMW) Well was dry Fall South Jenny Lake MW-5 Well was dry Spring South Jenny Lake MW-5 Well was dry Fall Signal Mountain SM-2 Well is dry Fall
The dry and obstructed wells have been an issue since our contract began in 2016. Dry wells would need to be deepened or replaced. It may be possible to fix the obstructed well or it may require replacement.
5. Results Analytical results are summarized in the tables in Appendix A. Sample data for both the fall and spring sampling have been loaded into the Wyoming DEQ GEM database. Laboratory reports are presented in Appendix B.
Permit Limit Exceedances WDEQ permit Upper Control Limit (UCL) exceedances are highlighted in red in Appendix A. UCL permit limits for each parameter are shown at the bottom of the Appendix A tables.
Non-Permit Water Quality Exceedance Not all of the tested parameters are included in all of the WDEQ permits. For instance, pH is not a parameter on the Beaver Creek septic permit (DEQ permit Beaver Creek Employee Housing WYS-039- 013). Where a tested parameter exceeds the typical permit limit value, but it is not a parameter listed on a permit, those values are highlighted in yellow.
Not all monitoring sites are permit sites. Where a tested parameter exceeds the typical permit limit value, but it was sampled at a site which is not a permit site, those values are also highlighted in yellow.
Presence of Bacteria and Other Observations Samples from Lupine Meadows, Beaver Creek, and Gros Ventre tested positive for total coliform presence in 2020. Also, Grow Ventre had two positive E. coli results in Fall 2020 at GV-6 and GV-9.
These are highlighted in red in Appendix A if total coliform is a permit parameter and are highlighted in yellow if not a permit parameter.
Total coliform may indicate the presence of bacteria other than those caused by septic effluent, such as bacteria living within the well bore but may also indicate that bacteria from septic effluent are reaching the well. E. coli indicates fecal impacts to groundwater from septic effluent. E. coli was found in the fall samples at Gros Ventre. Gross Ventre well MW-GV6 also had an ammonia exceedance during fall 2020 which further supports the likelihood of a septic impact to groundwater.
During fall 2020 sampling, Colter Bay wells CB-7 had a high level of ammonia (1.75 mg/L) which is not a permit parameter at this site. There was no presence of total coliform bacteria at this site.
KirK uses an enhanced decontamination procedure between areas to ensure no cross contamination between sites. It is unlikely that the presence of total coliform, e. coli or elevated ammonia or nitrate/nitrite is attributed to cross contamination. Exceedance for these analytes are likely reflective of water quality.
Formaldehyde Samples Formaldehyde samples were at Gros Ventre at wells GV-6 and GV-9 per the required sampling schedule, which yielded no detections.

Energy Laboratories Inc Billings MT received the following 12 samples for Kirk Eng and Natural Resources on 5/28/2020 for analysis.
Project: GTNP CLIENT: Kirk Eng and Natural Resources
Work Order: B20052118 CASE NARRATIVE 06/08/20Report Date:
This analysis confirmed the presence of coliform bacteria. Such bacterial growth indicates the water supply is or was being contaminated by some outside source. If E. coli bacteria was found in your water sample, their presence will be indicated as "present" on your analytical report. E. coli contamination indicates your water supply is or has been in contact with human or animal sewage.
There are many probable reasons why a water supply becomes contaminated. Perhaps you have done work on the pump or repaired a line. Surface drainage has perhaps influenced a shallow well. In any case, the water system should be disinfected to eliminate all bacterial growth.
DISINFECTION PROCEDURE
STEP 1: Calculate the depth of water in the well by subtracting the non-pumping (static) water level in the well from the depth of the well.
STEP 2: Using the table below, mix the amount given with water before adding to the well casing at the rate of 1 cup or less per 5 gallons of clear water; 2 cups to 1 quart in 10 gallons of clear water, to achieve the proper chlorine concentration in the well (approximately 100 mg/L). A high concentration of chlorine may void the warranty on the pump. Check with your supplier if concerned.
Depth of water in Well* (ft) 4"casing 6"casing 8"casing 10 ft 1 cup 1 cup 1 1/2 cups 20 ft 1 cup 1 cup 1 1/2 cups 30 ft 1 cup 2 cups 4 cups 40 ft 1 1/2 cups 2 cups 1 quart 60 ft 2 cups 4 cups 2 quarts 80 ft 2 cups 1 quart 2 quarts 100 ft 3 cups 1 1/2 qts 2 1/2 qts 150 ft 4 cups 2 1/2 qts 4 quarts
*Note: Depth of water in well is measured from the static water level to the bottom of the well.
STEP 3: Remove the well cap. Carefully pour the 5 to 10 gallon chlorine solution down the well. If available, attach a hose to an outside spigot and run the hose into the well casing and begin to circulate the water back down the well. Continue to recycle the water down the well until you can smell chlorinated water from the hose. This will ensure the chlorine solution has been thoroughly mixed in the well.
STEP 4: Once the well is disinfected, you may begin to disinfect the remainder of the system. Start at the farthest tap from the well. Turn on the COLD water tap only. (This process may be used to disinfect the HOT water as well; however, it may require multiple additions of chlorinated water to the well in order to achieve the quantity of chlorinated water required to disinfect the hot water tank). Once you can smell chlorinated water coming from the tap, you may shut it off. Follow this procedure with all cold water taps as you move back towards the well.
STEP 5: Leave the chlorine in the well and pipes for at least 24 hours to allow it to come into contact with the bacteria. DO
NOT USE THE WATER DURING THIS PERIOD!
STEP 6: After 24 hours, turn on an outside faucet (avoid discharging large volumes of chlorinated water into your septic system) and flush the chlorinated water from the system until the chlorine smell is no longer present. Chlorinated water may be discharged to the ground surface but it must not be allowed to make its way into a surface water.
STEP 7: 72 hours after you are no longer able to detect chlorine in your system, collect a water sample to test for coliform bacteria. This sample should be taken to determine if the disinfection process was effective. If coliform bacteria sample tests prove that the water is still unsatisfactory after disinfection, the disinfection process should be repeated until satisfactory results are obtained. If you are unable to resolve the unsatisfactory samples with a few disinfection efforts, it may indicate that there is a problem that needs to be identified and corrected, i.e. a cracked well casing or a cross connection to the system. Lab measurement of analytes considered field parameters that require analysis within 15 minutes of sampling such as pH, Dissolved Oxygen and Residual Chlorine, are qualified as being analyzed outside of recommended holding time.
Solid/soil samples are reported on a wet weight basis (as received) unless specifically indicated. If moisture corrected, data units are typically noted as –dry. For agricultural and mining soil parameters/characteristics, all samples are dried and ground prior to sample analysis.
Radiochemical precision results represent a 2-sigma Total Measurement Uncertainty.

Work Order: B20091406 CASE NARRATIVE 09/25/20Report Date:
