3.0. DEFINITIONS.
Not Used.
4.0. BACKGROUND.
The Moapa Valley National Wildlife Refuge (MVNWR) is operated by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS). It is located approximately 10.3 miles northwest of Glendale, Nevada. The nearest major City/town is Las Vegas, Nevada located approximately 58.7 miles southwest of MVNWR.
The Future Awarded Contract is to result in the Design-Build of approximately 500 feet of
Naturalized Stream Channel in Pedersen Stream at Moapa Valley National Wildlife Refuge (MVNWR) in Clark County, Nevada. The Muddy River Ecosystem in Clark County, Nevada begins in the Warm Springs Area where thermal springs from the regional carbonate aquifer coalesce over a short distance to create the main stem Muddy River. Many endemic, thermophilic species occur in the Warm Springs Areas including the monotypic Moapa dace (Moapa coriacea), which was originally listed as an Endangered Species in 1967 and subsequently designated with a recovery priority of 1 (highest priority) in the Endangered Species Act of 1973. There are currently three barriers to fish passage (culvert, stream gauge, and waterfall) on the Pedersen Stream and a newly-constructed channel and culvert are required to allow Moapa dace to move freely upstream to the springhead.
Purpose.
The purpose of this project is to restore connectivity between breeding habitat located in the Pederson stream springhead on the Moapa Valley National Wildlife Refuge and downstream habitat on the privately-owned Warm Springs Natural Area (Southern Nevada Water Authority) for the federally-endangered Moapa Dace (Moapa coriacea). Restoring connectivity will enable dace to access breeding habitat through installation of a reinforced concrete box culvert, relocation of an existing US Geological Survey stream gauge, and excavation of new stream channel to re-route a portion of the stream.
