REQUEST FOR INFORMATION (RFI) OFFICIAL RESPONSES
127EAW22R0028 - Caldor Fire Gates
RFI responses will be responded to as necessary in amendment format which will be posted to the solicitation via beta.SAM.gov
Telephone requests for information will not be accepted or returned.
RFI #1 – The Gate Location and Type Chart Calls out 25’span at location 38.545, -120.365 On Cat
Creek Road and identifies Type A Gate. The Contract sizes listed on the gate plan page for Type A is 14’ and 16’. Are we to assume a type A will be used but built to span 25’? Or should a type B be used in this location?
USFS Response – Type B would be acceptable
RFI #2 – Can you provide a detail or photos of the lock can for the Type C Gate?
USFS Response – Photos were provided in last RFI update. An example is located at 38.903, -
120.376 which is the intersection of Ice House Road and 12N44 (Road to SMUDEA at Robbs
Powerhouse).
RFI #3 – Gate Type D plan sheet calls out Upper and Lower arms 153.65 LG. What does the LG represent, length on grade? Is the gate to be 153.65” from hinge point to end of gate? That is only
12.8 feet but the Type and Location Chart states 25’ for a quantity of 1 type D? Is this correct?
USFS Response – The length (25ft) is approximate. Contractor to fabricate gate to close road.
Type C may be more appropriate based on location but contractors choice.
RFI #4 – On gate details C and D it does not specify a concrete footing, will there need to be a
3’dia X 3’depth footing made from concrete?
USFS Response – Yes. Footing will need to support gate arm.
RFI #5 – On Gate Type C plan details the width of the gates in the closed position is 20’ 10.625”.
Is this correct of does Note:2 take precedence for a different width?
USFS Response – Yes, Note 2 takes precedence. All gates need to be sized for the location
RFI #6 – Does the FS have the exact widths between all gate location hinge post to lock post and hinge pot to hinge post? All measurements from center to center.
USFS Response – No. Gate lengths will be location dependent
RFI #7 – Is there a central laydown area the contractor can occupy for material, equipment, and camping trailer parking?
USFS Response – Due to the size of the project area, there is no “central” location. Staging areas can be determined, USFS request that contractor include potential lay down locations with proposal. By “camping trailer” does the contractor mean a job site trailer or an actual camping trailer to be used for overnight occupation?
RFI #8 – May Fast Set bagged concrete mix be used? This will aid in getting gates 100% complete in one day or less on site. Concrete ready mix deliveries are also an obstacle that far from the batch plants and the mud may be expired before arrival to the site.
USFS Response – Yes. Only requirement is that the footings be of concrete and spec’d to hold the torque generated by the gate arm.
RFI #9 – Does the FS have any photos of each gate location?
off?
USFS Response – There are some general photos that can be provided. As noted in previous
RFI’s exact location to be field fit with contactor and COR.
RFI #10 – What is the retention for this project?
USFS Response – Not applicable for this contract
RFI #11 – Are there any liquidated damages? If so, what is the amount?
USFS Response – No liquidated damages.
RFI #12 – – General gate location will be identified by the USDAFS, but the exact layout will be done by the contractor. Please identify the minimum spacing of the inside face of the hinge post and lock post from the shoulder of the pavement, curb, concrete, or ect.
USFS Response – Exact layout to be agreed to by contractor and COR. No minimum spacing requirements. Goal is to prevent AC pavement penetrations.
RFI #13 – A 4” OD x 1.5” ID ball bearing is not readily available. Can the contractor use what size is available and change the hinge shaft diameter to fit. For example, a 2” hinge shaft.
USFS Response – Yes. Although drawing shows ball bearing hinge, hinge just needs to be functional. Contractor can use alternate size ball bearing or alternate hinge design to bear arm weight.
RFI #14 – If the contractor can find a thrust bearing to take place of the 3/8” thick brass washer will that be acceptable between the upper and lower hinge tabs.
USFS Response – Yes. Also see RFI 13
RFI #15 – Does the USDAFS want to include a grease zert fitting at each bearing strap on the type
A & B gates? This is something we normally do for other municipalities on the same gate design.
USFS Response – Yes, that is both acceptable and desired.
