TILING

09 3000-1

SECTION 09 3000

PART 1 - GENERAL

1.1 DESCRIPTION

A. Work included: Provide porcelain tile where shown on the Drawings, as specified herein, and as needed for a complete and proper installation.

1.2 QUALITY ASSURANCE

A. Use adequate numbers of skilled workmen who are thoroughly trained and experienced in the necessary crafts and who are completely familiar with the specified requirements and the methods needed for proper performance of the work of this Section.

B. Provide manufacturer's Master Grade Certificate stating type and location of each tile material in this Section.

C. Work shall be executed and tested in accordance with current editions of the following standards.

1.1 ANSI A 108.1 - Installation of Porcelain and/or Ceramic Tile with Portland Cement.

1.2 ANSI A 108.4 - Installation of Porcelain and/or Ceramic Tile with Water Resistant Organic Adhesives.

1.3 ANSI A 108.5 - Installation of Porcelain and/or Ceramic Tile with Dry Set Portland Cement Mortar.

1.4 ANSI A 108.6 - Installation of Porcelain and/or Ceramic Tile with Chemical Resistant.

1.5 Consult the Tile Council of America’s Handbook of Ceramic Tile Installation for other types of specifications.

1.3 SUBMITTALS

A. Product data: provide submittals 10 working days minimum after the contractor has received the Owner's Notice to Proceed, submit:

1. Materials list of items proposed to be provided under this Section.

2. Manufacturer's specifications and other data needed to prove compliance with the specified requirements.

3. Provide samples of each type, class, and color of porcelain tile required, not less than six (6) pieces showing the layout pattern, mounted on plywood or hardboard backing, and grouted as specified.

B. Except when specifically exempted by DPW, submit Master Grade Certificates for each shipment of porcelain tile prior to arrival of the shipment at the job site.

1.4 PRODUCT HANDLING

A. The Contractor shall provide to the Government COR extra porcelain tile in order to be stored by the user.

The quantity shall be based on 10 percent of the total square footage of this project.

PART 2-PRODUCTS

2.1 PORCELAIN TILE

A. Provide porcelain tile and accessories complying with Tile Council of America Specification 137.1, in colors and patterns selected by the DPW from standard and custom colors and patterns of the approved manufacturers.

B. FLOOR TILE:

Manufacturer: Basis-of-Design: The following product is the basis of design available manufacturer subject to compliance with requirements for porcelain tile.

a) Manufacturer: Daltile

b) Model: Porcelain Tile “Saddle Brook” and “Saddle Brook - XT”

c) Size: 6” (Inches) X 36” (Inches) Planks, thickness 5/16”

d) Color:

i) Farmhouse XT SD84: Entries (Vestibules), and Soda Machines Areas (see plans).

ii) Farmhouse SD84: Everywhere except at the following areas mentioned above, such as entries

(vestibules), and soda machines areas.

e) Saddle Brook: Wet & Level – Interior Floor Applications. Target DCOF value: when is wet, >/=

(more or equal) to 0.42, which is the minimum standard for level interior spaces expected to be walked upon when wet, as stated in ANSI A137.1-A326.3.

g) Saddle Brook XT: Exterior Floor Applications. Target DCOF value: when is wet, >/= (more or equal) to 0.60 to be used at restrooms, and other wet areas such as areas where drinks are served and entry vestibules.

h) Floor and Wainscoat Wall Tile at Restroom 109: Contractor shall match the color, tile texture, cove base, and grout color from Restroom 110 in order to install new floor and wall tiles in Restroom 109.

Submit samples to the DPW COR for approval before installation. The contractor shall demolish the existing sheet rock behind the existing wall tile, and install new moisture resistance sheet rock at those areas for the new tile wainscoat area in room 109.

2.2 SETTING MATERIALS

A. Comply with pertinent recommendations contained in the latest Tile Council of America "Handbook for Ceramic Tile Installation".

B. Cement Mortar:

Manufacturer: Basis-of-Design: The following product is the basis of design available manufacturer subject to compliance with requirements for cement mortar.

a) Manufacturer: Portland Cement Mortar.

b) Model: Latex-Portland Cement Mortar.

c) Provide a commercially prepared mixture of Portland cement and special latex additive for use as a bond coat for setting tile.

d) Comply with ANSI A118.A

C. Special tile setting mortars will be considered by DPW when complete technical data is submitted in advance.

2.3 GROUT

Manufacturer: Basis-of-Design: The following product is the basis of design available manufacturer subject to compliance with requirements for epoxy grout.

a) Manufacturer: Laticrete

b) Epoxy Grout Model: Spectra Lock 2000 IG.

c) Color: #39 Mushroom

d) Manufacturer must recommend for additional grout sealant over the epoxy grout and flooring to avoid urine and chemicals to penetrate into the grout.

e) Comply with pertinent recommendations contained in the Tile Council of America "Handbook for

Ceramic Tile Installation" in colors selected by DPW from standard colors available from the approved manufacturers.

f) Provide a grout system employing epoxy resin and hardener portions, with coarse silica filler permitted, especially formulated for industrial and commercial use where chemical resistance is of paramount importance.

g) Provide a product licensed by the Tile Council of America, and bearing that license symbol.

h) Installation – ANSI A108.6

2.4 OTHER MATERIALS

A. Provide other materials, not specifically described but required for a complete and proper installation, as selected by the Contractor subject to the approval of DPW.

B. Aluminum Threshold:

Manufacturer: Basis-of-Design: The following product is the basis of design available manufacturer subject to compliance with requirements for aluminum threshold

a) Manufacturers: Pemko Aluminum Threshold.

b) Color: Match existing colors for the existing exterior door entrances, and for all the existing interior transitions. Contractor shall field verify.

c) Install a 4 inch, and ½ inch high fluted aluminum threshold (half saddle) at the exterior doors entrances, this applies to the areas where the new porcelain tile abuts existing exterior exposed concrete.

d) Install a 4 inch, and ½ inch high fluted aluminum threshold (half saddle) at the interior doors openings, this applies to the areas where the new porcelain tile abuts the existing exposed concrete; and also at the interior door openings where the existing epoxy flooring abuts the new porcelain tile in the kitchen area.

d) Field verify all the exterior and interior door opening dimensions where new porcelain tile will get installed.

C. Base Boards – Match the existing wood base board design form at each space, and at the spaces where there is rubber base and tile base (Vestibule 100); prepare existing wall surface and install 3” high wood base board. Contractor shall coordinate with DPW-COR for the selected design form of the new wood base board at the spaces where there in not an existing wood base board. The wood base board shall be stained and seal to match existing at each space. Provide samples from each different design form (type) in order for DPW COR to approve it before the installation.

D. If it applies for this project, use where needed: Water proofing sheet or liquid applied - ANSI A118.10.

HLM 5000 approved. Product to be submitted for DPW approval.

PART 3 - INSTALLATION

3.1 INSTALLATION

A. Acceptability of Surface

1. Before installation of ceramic tile, the substrate surface cannot show variations in excess of:

Floor Wall Dry set mortar 1/8" in 10' 1/8" in 8' Latex Portland cement mortar 1/8" in 10' 1/8" in 8' Epoxy 1/8" in 10' 1/8" in 8' Organic Adhesives 1/16" in 3' 1/8" in 8'

2. The substrate surface must be free of all loose dirt, oil, grease, wax, dust, or curing compounds. If the substrate contains these materials, sand blast, grind, or sand to remove the materials and scarify the surface.

3. Grind surface of concrete block behind tile for better adhesion.

B. Layout

1. Locate all movement or expansion joints prior to determining the layout of the tile.

2. Layout all tile work so as to minimize cuts less than one-half tile in size.

3. Layout all tile work so that cuts in both walls and floors are to be least conspicuous.

4. Align all floor and wall joints to give straight and uniform grout lines.

C. Installation Systems

1. Floor porcelain tile- where concrete subfloors are level or slope to drains: thin set, Latex- Portland Cement Mortar bonded in accordance with F 113-10 method of the Tile Council of America. Fill all joints with epoxy grout.

D. Grouting

1. Follow grout manufacturer’s recommendations as to grouting procedures and precautions.

2. Remove all grout haze, observing grout manufacturer’s recommendations as to the use of various cleaners.

3. Thoroughly rinse all tile work before and after the use of cleaners and chemicals, if required.

E. Protection of Tile Surface

1. Finished installation should be free of all chipped, cracked, defective or unbounded tile.

2. Cover all tile floors with heavy duty construction of Kraft paper masked in place to avoid stains of damage from construction traffic.

3. No foot or wheel traffic can use the floor for a minimum of 3 days, preferably 7 days.

4. Place large, flat sheets of wood in high traffic areas to protect newly tiled floor.
