The recipient will establish bone-like organoids as predictive tools for craniofacial bone repair...
- The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research awarded Virginia Commonwealth University $310,500 on June 15, 2026, under the Oral Diseases and Disorders Research program (CFDA 93.121) to investigate the role of nuclear bone morphogenetic protein 2 (NBMP2) in macrophage-mediated periodontal regeneration and bone repair. The research will characterize the regulation of macrophage NBMP2 and BMP2 expression, functionally dissect NBMP2-regulated STAT6 signaling pathways in macrophages,...
- The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research awarded The Ohio State University $690,195 on March 1, 2026, under the Oral Diseases and Disorders Research program (CFDA 93.121) to investigate neuroimmunological mechanisms regulating reparative dentinogenesis in response to deep tooth injuries and inflammation. The project examines how calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) derived from sensory neurons regulates immune and mineralizing cell responses during tooth healing, specifically...
- This federal Project Grant award from the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR), under the Oral Diseases and Disorders Research program (CFDA 93.121), will provide $429,000.00 to the Regents of the University of Michigan to conduct research on the unique characteristics of jawbone biology. The research aims to gain a molecular-level understanding of how osteoblasts in the jawbone respond differently to bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) signaling and mechanical loading...
- The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research awarded the University of Illinois $576,957 on September 1, 2026, under the Oral Diseases and Disorders Research program (CFDA 93.121) to develop and evaluate nanotherapeutic and immunotherapeutic approaches for periodontal disease targeting inflammatory and osteoclastogenic pathways. The project develops site-specific nanoparticle platforms designed to attenuate disease progression and preserve alveolar bone. Aim 1 evaluates myeloid...
- The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research awarded the University of Pittsburgh $679,631 on February 15, 2026, under the Oral Diseases and Disorders Research program (CFDA 93.121) to investigate treatment for peri-implantitis via local immunomodulation and the microbiome. The project develops microparticle-based drug delivery systems that provide local, sustained delivery of cytokines and chemokines to modulate the host immune response in peri-implantitis, an inflammatory...
- The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research awarded the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston $323,000 on July 9, 2026, to model causal mediation by dental care and predict jaw osteonecrosis risk in bisphosphonate users under the Oral Diseases and Disorders Research program (CFDA 93.121). The research addresses a critical clinical gap in managing osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ)—a debilitating adverse event marked by exposed necrotic bone, persistent infection, and...
- The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research awarded the Regents of the University of Michigan $584,420 on May 1, 2026, under the Oral Diseases and Disorders Research program (CFDA 93.121) to investigate the cellular and genetic mechanisms underlying medication-induced osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ), a damaging condition of exposed and necrotic bone that occurs primarily in cancer patients taking high-dose bisphosphonates or anti-RANK ligand antibodies. The project will elucidate...
- The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research awarded Virginia Commonwealth University $446,611 on July 7, 2026, under the Oral Diseases and Disorders Research program (CFDA 93.121, Assistance Listing R21DE035939) to investigate endothelial dysfunction in peri-implantitis and identify reversible therapeutic interventions. The award funds research mapping and modulating vascular disease in peri-implantitis lesions, a chronic inflammatory condition affecting approximately 20 percent...
The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research awarded the Board of Regents of the University of Nebraska $383,750 on August 26, 2026, under the Oral Diseases and Disorders Research program (CFDA 93.121) to develop multimodal bioelectroceutical strategies for alveolar bone regeneration in diabetic and aged patients. The University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska is developing an integrated approach combining electrical stimulation, small-molecule pharmacologic agents, and ionically conductive biodegradable scaffolds to overcome inflammatory barriers and restore bone quality in compromised hosts. The strategy leverages piezoelectric properties of bone to enhance calcium influx, activate osteoblasts, and promote angiogenesis while using ion channel modulators such as amlodipine, amiloride, and 4-aminopyridine to enhance osteogenesis. Small molecules including SHH agonist (SAG) and WNT activator (WAY-316606) augment osteogenic differentiation while reducing bone resorption. Embedding these agents in scaffolds enables localized delivery and reduced systemic toxicity. Preliminary work established proof-of-concept in soft tissue repair; this award extends the approach to alveolar bone regeneration in diabetic and aged populations to suppress chronic inflammation and oxidative stress while stimulating neurovascular repair. The award period runs through August 25, 2027. This is a Project Grant, the assistance type under which NIDCR funds basic, translational, and clinical research in dental, oral, and craniofacial health and disease.
