This Project Grant award from the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), under the federal Drug Use and Addiction Research Programs (CFDA 93.279), is intended to develop and pilot a telehealth intervention delivered through syringe service programs (SSPs) to improve uptake and retention of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD) among racially and regionally diverse people who inject drugs (PWID) in Minnesota. The $239,148 award, with a project period from September 15, 2024 to July 31, 2027, will fund formative research to understand determinants of HIV and addiction among PWID, the development of an integrative, low-barrier, low-stigma telehealth program for urban and rural PWID, and a pilot study to assess the feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary impact of the telehealth intervention delivered through 4 SSP sites across Minnesota. The project aims to address structural barriers limiting PWID access to evidence-based HIV-related interventions, including the fragmented healthcare system, administrative burdens of social programs, and stigma toward PWID in healthcare settings.
