Project Grant R21AG101676
- The National Institute on Aging awarded the University of California, San Diego $182,173 on March 1, 2026, under the Aging Research program (CFDA 93.866) to investigate how noradrenergic modulation during non-rapid eye movement sleep relates to memory consolidation and to test whether precise timing of cortical slow oscillations, thalamic spindles, and hippocampal sharp wave-ripples orchestrates memory transfer from hippocampus to cortical long-term memory. The research aims to understand how...
- The National Institute on Aging awarded the University of California Irvine $1.238 million on February 1, 2026, under the Aging Research program (CFDA 93.866) to investigate longitudinal relationships between Alzheimer's disease pathophysiology, local sleep expression, and sleep-dependent memory across preclinical disease stages. The project uses multimodal neuroimaging combining polysomnography, high-density electroencephalography, and high-resolution structural magnetic resonance imaging of...
- The National Institute on Aging awarded the Regents of the University of Michigan $218,410 on September 16, 2025, under the Aging Research program (CFDA 93.866) to investigate the link between sleep disturbances and age-related memory loss. The award is classified as a Project Grant. The research examines how sleep deprivation alters the activity and connectivity of somatostatin-expressing inhibitory interneurons in the hippocampus, shifting the brain's excitatory/inhibitory balance and...
- This federal Project Grant award of $442,938, provided by the National Institute on Aging (CFDA 93.866 Aging Research), supports research at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) to investigate the relationship between sleep, memory, and aging. The key objectives are to: 1) characterize how aging affects sleep patterns required for memory consolidation and synaptic plasticity during long-term memory formation; and 2) determine how upregulating the unfolded protein response can...
- The National Institute on Aging (National Institutes of Health, Department of Health and Human Services) awarded The Regents of the University of California, San Francisco $711,678 on September 1, 2026, under the Aging Research program (CFDA 93.866) to develop and validate a gene-environment deviation (GED) framework quantifying the mismatch between observed sleep patterns and genetically predicted sleep preferences in relation to Alzheimer's disease and Alzheimer's disease-related dementias...
- The National Institute on Aging awarded Yale University $839,400 under the Aging Research program (CFDA 93.866) on September 1, 2026, to validate novel algorithms for assessing sleep deficiency in persons with Alzheimer's disease and related dementias. The project addresses the urgent need for feasible, accurate assessment methods for sleep deficiency in ADRD populations, where over half of patients experience sleep abnormalities that accelerate cognitive and functional decline. Existing...
- The National Institute on Aging awarded The Washington University $578,856 on February 15, 2026, under the Aging Research program (CFDA 93.866) to investigate how sleep reinforces homeostatic set-points in neural activity and mitigates neurodegenerative disease. The award funds research applying novel computational tools to continuous multi-site recordings of neural activity in P301S mice, a tauopathy model, to test whether sleep enhancement can reinforce criticality—an optimal computational...
- The National Institute on Aging awarded the University of California, San Diego $439,750 on May 15, 2026, under the Aging Research program (CFDA 93.866) to characterize how the dorsal and ventral hippocampus encode spatial information in very large environments and how this encoding changes from adulthood to senescence, with particular focus on understanding early hippocampal dysfunction in Alzheimer's disease. The research aims to fill a gap in knowledge about the ventral hippocampus's role...
- The National Institute on Aging awarded Northwestern University $1,483,965 on March 15, 2026, under the Aging Research program (CFDA 93.866) to investigate the proteomic signature of sleep and its implications for Alzheimer's disease. The project aims to investigate polysomnographic sleep biomarkers, proteomic blood biomarkers, and neurocognition in a large longitudinal sample of adults; disentangle the relationship between sleep, neurocognitive function, and circulating proteins using an...
- The National Institute on Aging, part of the Department of Health and Human Services National Institutes of Health, awarded $249,000 to The Regents of The University of Colorado on July 1, 2026, under the Aging Research program (CFDA 93.866). The award funds research investigating how beta-amyloid accumulation impacts hypocretin neuron activity and subsequently disrupts sleep architecture in Alzheimer's disease. The research examines whether beta-amyloid accelerates death of hypocretin neurons...
The National Institute on Aging awarded the University of California Irvine $221,883 on September 1, 2026, under the Aging Research program (CFDA 93.866) to investigate the role of sleep in protecting spatial memory from age-related decline. The project will conduct a single experiment using an ecologically valid ambulatory virtual environment to determine the impact of sleep on spatial memory in cognitively healthy, aged adults and evaluate a potential sleep intervention targeting memory reactivation. Aim 1 will measure spatial memory performance before and after a 90-minute delay consisting of either an EEG-monitored nap or wakefulness, with performance tested immediately after the delay and again one week later, to determine whether post-learning sleep improves spatial memory recall more than equivalent wakefulness and whether improvement correlates with sleep stages and EEG waveforms linked to memory consolidation. Aim 2 will test whether targeted memory reactivation—a technique using task-related sounds presented during sleep—can enhance spatial memory in aged adults, with sounds presented during a nap immediately after learning and during nocturnal sleep over the following week. The period of performance runs from September 1, 2026, to August 31, 2028. Work is performed in Irvine, California.
