Project Grant R03DE036026
- The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research awarded The University of Chicago $133,239 on April 1, 2026, under the Oral Diseases and Disorders Research program (CFDA 93.121) to develop and deliver a research education program called Cultivating Researchers in Oral and Systemic Health Studies (CROSS). The program trains undergraduate students enrolled in colleges across the Chicago area in cross-disciplinary clinical research that integrates oral health, medicine, and the social...
- The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, within the Department of Health and Human Services National Institutes of Health, awarded the University of Illinois $320,660 on July 9, 2026, under the Oral Diseases and Disorders Research program (CFDA 93.121) to develop anionic nanohybrid aggregate formulations for early childhood caries prevention. The project addresses early childhood caries affecting approximately 25 percent of American preschool children, particularly those of...
- The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research awarded the University of Arizona $371,900 on August 3, 2026, under the Oral Diseases and Disorders Research program (CFDA 93.121) to develop innovative methods for evidence synthesis in oral health research. The project addresses barriers in current oral health evidence synthesis by developing oral-health-specific artificial intelligence tools, methodological resources, and analytical approaches. Aim 1 validates and adapts AI tools...
- The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research awarded the University of Southern California $481,739 on September 1, 2026, under the Oral Diseases and Disorders Research program (CFDA 93.121) to develop three-dimensional organoid models representing the stepwise neoplastic evolution of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma. The recipient institution will create organoids directly from normal human oral tissues, patient-derived leukoplakia samples, and head and neck squamous cell...
- The National Institute on Aging, within the National Institutes of Health, awarded University of Massachusetts Medical School $460,625 on July 15, 2026, under the Aging Research program (CFDA 93.866) to evaluate oral health indicators in US nursing homes. The project will leverage the federally mandated Minimum Data Set 3.0 collected on virtually all US nursing home residents to monitor oral health progress, predict residents in greatest need of oral health services, and identify successful...
- The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, part of the National Institutes of Health within the Department of Health and Human Services, awarded $435,875 to Indiana University Indianapolis on July 15, 2026, under the Oral Diseases and Disorders Research program (CFDA 93.121) to investigate oxylipin-mediated biofilm colonization in peri-implant disease. The research explores the role of oxylipins in regulating bacterial biofilm formation around dental implants. The study aims...
- The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, within the Department of Health and Human Services National Institutes of Health, awarded The Trustees of Columbia University in the City of New York $471,123 on August 1, 2026, under the Oral Diseases and Disorders Research program (CFDA 93.121) for the AHEAD project (Adolescent Health and the Early-Life Dietary Exposome: Developing a Metabolomics-Based Index of Healthy Eating to Predict Children's Health Trajectories). The project...
- The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, part of the Department of Health and Human Services National Institutes of Health, awarded the University of Illinois $249,000 on August 5, 2026, under the Oral Diseases and Disorders Research program (CFDA 93.121) to develop bone-like organoids that elucidate how immune responses influence craniofacial bone healing and regeneration. The recipient will establish bone-like organoids as predictive tools for craniofacial bone repair...
- The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, an operating division of the Department of Health and Human Services National Institutes of Health, awarded Regents of the University of Michigan $600,214 on August 1, 2026, under the Oral Diseases and Disorders Research program (CFDA 93.121) to define the neuronal basis of odontogenic pain and identify targets for non-opioid analgesic development. The project, led by Dr. Joshua Emrick, investigates the cells, circuits, and behavioral...
- The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research awarded The University of Iowa $815,438 under the Oral Diseases and Disorders Research program on July 15, 2026. The award funds a longitudinal study investigating how a self-determination theory–based psychoeducational intervention affects oral microbial communities and early childhood caries risk factors in children from birth to three years of age. The research will compare oral metagenomic profiles between children receiving the...
The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, part of the National Institutes of Health under the Department of Health and Human Services, awarded The University of Chicago $328,000 on August 5, 2026, under the Oral Diseases and Disorders Research program (CFDA 93.121) to develop and validate a microsimulation model of oral health lifetime outcomes and resource use in older adults. The project, titled "Development and Validation of the U.S. Oral Health Microsimulation Model," will create the MOLAR-OA model to address unmet oral health needs among U.S. older adults aged 65 and older. The model will adapt Andersen's behavioral model to map causal pathways from risk factors through intermediate oral health outcomes to downstream disease, accounting for social, behavioral, and biological determinants of health. By leveraging past microsimulation work on diet-related disease, the model will enable evaluation of long-term health and economic impacts of oral health interventions—outcomes conventional short-term studies cannot capture. The research responds to population projections estimating 98 million Americans aged 65 and older by 2060 and addresses the particular vulnerability of older adults from disadvantaged backgrounds who face heightened risk of poor oral health following loss of employer-sponsored dental insurance at retirement. Performance of work takes place in Chicago, Illinois. The award period runs from August 5, 2026, through August 4, 2028. This is a Project Grant, an assistance type providing time-limited support for a defined research initiative.
