This Project Grant award of $1,829,617 from the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) under CFDA 93.865 Child Health and Human Development Extramural Research, aims to develop stem cell-based models to study placental defects associated with early-onset preeclampsia. The 5-year project, commencing on July 1, 2024, will pursue three key objectives: 1) Identify optimal stem cell methods to model abnormal trophoblast differentiation in preeclampsia placentas, 2) Characterize preeclampsia placentas with maternal vascular malperfusion (MVM), with or without fetal vascular malperfusion (FVM), and bank/characterize associated mesenchymal stem/stromal cells, and 3) Evaluate the trophoblast-mesenchymal stem cell interaction within the chorionic villi of different preeclampsia placental subtypes. This research is expected to establish subtype-specific cell-based models of preeclampsia, leading to the identification of diagnostic biomarkers and therapeutic targets to improve pregnancy care for women and infants.
