The award funds research mapping and modulating vascular disease in peri-implantitis lesions, a chronic inflammatory condition affecting approximately 20 percent...
- The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research awarded Virginia Commonwealth University $101,828 on December 1, 2026, under the Oral Diseases and Disorders Research program (CFDA 93.121) to conduct functional and structural characterization of phospholipase A2 in Porphyromonas gingivalis, a keystone pathogen of periodontitis. The research delineates the biochemical and structural features of the PG1879 enzyme as a phospholipase A2 and determines its role in the pathophysiology of...
- The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research awarded Virginia Commonwealth University $135,225 on August 4, 2026, under the Oral Diseases and Disorders Research program (CFDA 93.121) to explore the role of FOSL1-mediated liquid-liquid phase separation in cisplatin resistance in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma. The funded research investigates mechanisms of cisplatin resistance in HNSCC, the seventh most common cancer worldwide. The study focuses on how FOSL1, a protein with...
- The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research awarded Virginia Commonwealth University $310,500 on June 15, 2026, under the Oral Diseases and Disorders Research program (CFDA 93.121) to investigate the role of nuclear bone morphogenetic protein 2 (NBMP2) in macrophage-mediated periodontal regeneration and bone repair. The research will characterize the regulation of macrophage NBMP2 and BMP2 expression, functionally dissect NBMP2-regulated STAT6 signaling pathways in macrophages,...
- The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research awarded Virginia Commonwealth University $473,186 on September 1, 2026, under the Oral Diseases and Disorders Research program (CFDA 93.121) to conduct functional characterization of phospholipase A2 enzymes in Porphyromonas gingivalis, a keystone periodontal pathogen. The research interrogates phospholipase A2 (PLA2) homologs identified in P. gingivalis genomes, specifically examining whether bacterial PLA2 enzymes function as conserved...
- The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research awarded the University of Pennsylvania $427,839 on August 1, 2026, under the Oral Diseases and Disorders Research program (CFDA 93.121) to develop and validate a multimodal imaging platform integrating stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) microscopy with tissue immunofluorescence for spatially resolved metabolic mapping at single-cell resolution in human papillomavirus-positive head and neck squamous cell carcinoma tissue. The research...
- The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research awarded the University of Georgia Research Foundation $644,452 on March 1, 2026, under the Oral Diseases and Disorders Research program (CFDA 93.121) to develop engineered synthetic low-density lipoprotein nanoparticles encapsulated with 7-dehydrocholesterol (7DHC-LDLs) as an adjuvant nanotechnology to enhance anti-tumor immunity in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma when used in combination with immune checkpoint inhibitors. The...
- The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research awarded the University of Southern California $481,739 on September 1, 2026, under the Oral Diseases and Disorders Research program (CFDA 93.121) to develop three-dimensional organoid models representing the stepwise neoplastic evolution of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma. The recipient institution will create organoids directly from normal human oral tissues, patient-derived leukoplakia samples, and head and neck squamous cell...
- The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, part of the Department of Health and Human Services National Institutes of Health, awarded The Washington University $427,625 on February 6, 2026, under the Oral Diseases and Disorders Research program (CFDA 93.121). The award funds research to develop and evaluate radiation-guided theranostic agents for detecting and monitoring response to oral cancer treatment. The research leverages radiation-inducible antigens, specifically...
The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research awarded Virginia Commonwealth University $632,383 on September 1, 2026, under the Oral Diseases and Disorders Research program (CFDA 93.121) to conduct mechanistic research on phosphatidylinositol 4-phosphate 5-kinase I5 (PIPKIGI5) in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma immunotherapy. The funded research explores how PIPKIGI5, an endosome-localized lipid kinase, regulates interferon-gamma signaling and tumor immunogenicity in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma. The project hypothesizes that targeting PIPKIGI5 will enhance tumor response to immune checkpoint blockade therapy. Aim 1 defines the tumor-intrinsic role of PIPKIGI5 in regulating immunogenicity and sensitivity to anti-PD-1 therapy, including mechanistic studies on STAT1 interaction and kinase-dependent phosphatidylinositol-4,5-bisphosphate generation. Aim 2 determines how PIPKIGI5 modulates dendritic cell activation and T-cell priming capacity. Aim 3 evaluates therapeutic potential of PIPKIGI5-targeting strategies to strengthen antitumor immunity in vivo. Work is performed at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia. The period of performance runs from September 1, 2026, through July 31, 2031.
