The award supports the development of advanced imaging methods in pulse electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) to enable precise partial oxygen pressure (pO2) measurements for cancer diagnosis and treatment...
- Federal Grant Award Summary The National Cancer Institute (NCI) awarded Johns Hopkins University a $144,193 Project Grant under the Cancer Detection and Diagnosis Research program (CFDA 93.394) effective September 4, 2025 through August 31, 2030. This award provides protected salary support for Dr. Preethi Korangath to serve as a Laboratory Research Specialist in Dr. Robert Ivkov's laboratory, where she will facilitate the completion of Research Project Grants (R01) by leveraging her expertise...
- The National Cancer Institute awarded The Johns Hopkins University $249,000 on January 1, 2026, under the Cancer Detection and Diagnosis Research program (CFDA 93.394) to develop large-scale artificial intelligence using radiomics, deep learning, and physics-based generative modeling to improve clinical outcomes in nuclear medicine. The award funds three specific aims: construction of a large database of clinical positron emission tomography/computed tomography images with physician-annotated...
- The National Institutes of Health National Cancer Institute awarded Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory $793,679 on August 6, 2026, under the Cancer Biology Research program (CFDA 93.396) to develop whole-body redox maps for metastatic cancer therapy. The project uses protein degradation-based sensing to visualize oxidative stress in vivo across animal models of prostate cancer. The work generates two complementary, immune-competent mouse models—OXIGEM and ROXYCAP—that reveal cellular redox states...
- The National Cancer Institute awarded The Johns Hopkins University $399,829 on July 1, 2026, under the Cancer Detection and Diagnosis Research program (CFDA 93.394) to identify imaging biomarkers using multiplexed digital pathology data to predict clinical outcomes in triple-negative breast cancer. The project applies spatially resolved, high-throughput single-cell computational analysis to characterize tumor microenvironment immune architecture in breast cancer specimens, with the goal of...
- The National Cancer Institute awarded The Trustees of Columbia University in the City of New York $594,297 on June 18, 2026, to develop elasticity imaging methodologies for breast cancer detection and treatment monitoring under the Cancer Detection and Diagnosis Research program (CFDA 93.394). The award funds two noninvasive theranostic approaches: Harmonic Motion Imaging (HMI) for monitoring locally advanced malignant tumors during neo-adjuvant chemotherapy, and HMI-guided focused ultrasound...
- The National Cancer Institute awarded The Johns Hopkins University $399,829 on July 1, 2026, under the Cancer Detection and Diagnosis Research program (CFDA 93.394) to develop Vascular Expansion Microscopy (VascExM), a method for high-resolution optical imaging of brain vasculature at endothelial cell scale on standard, diffraction-limited microscopes. The work addresses the need for sub-micron vascular imaging in preclinical and clinical neuropathology samples. The recipient will develop...
- The National Cancer Institute awarded The Washington University $645,414 on June 18, 2026, under the Cancer Detection and Diagnosis Research program (CFDA 93.394) to develop integrin-targeted positron emission tomography imaging and therapeutics for predicting and treating radiation-induced pulmonary fibrosis in lung cancer patients. The project uses mouse models of radiation-induced pulmonary fibrosis to test two complementary approaches: non-invasive αvβ6 PET imaging to detect early...
The National Cancer Institute awarded The Johns Hopkins University $692,609 on August 3, 2026, under the Cancer Detection and Diagnosis Research program (CFDA 93.394) to develop and validate quantitative MRI applications for monitoring tumor oxygenation during radiation therapy. The project will evaluate OxytrackIMT, an elastomer-and-silicone-oil-based molecular sensor developed by Stratagen Bio Inc. (an MIT spin-off), and oxygen-enhanced MRI for longitudinal measurement of tumor partial pressure of oxygen (PO2) in vivo. Hypoxic tumors require two to three times higher radiation doses for effective treatment, yet traditional invasive methods of measuring oxygenation disrupt therapy workflows and provide only single-point measurements in heterogeneous tumor environments. The research aims to validate these noninvasive monitoring technologies using healthy immunocompetent swine to assess OxytrackIMT longitudinal performance and immunodeficient swine with inducible sarcomas to evaluate PO2 measurement and radiation therapy response under clinically relevant conditions that cannot be modeled in cell culture or initial human studies. Work is performed at Baltimore, Maryland. The project period extends from the award date through July 31, 2031. This is a Project Grant, the standard assistance type for investigator-initiated research under NCI programs.
