Project Grant R01AG099180
- The National Institute on Aging awarded $654,506 to The Regents of The University of Colorado, doing business as University of Colorado-Denver, on September 1, 2026, under the Aging Research program (CFDA 93.866). The award funds research into glial-associated immune dysregulation in Alzheimer's disease pathology, specifically investigating how reactive astrocytes drive immune dysfunction, alter dendritic structure in the brain, and contribute to synaptic dysfunction and cognitive decline. The...
- The National Institute on Aging awarded $1.669 million to American Institutes For Research In The Behavioral Sciences on September 15, 2025, under the Aging Research program (CFDA 93.866) to develop a comprehensive residential address history for Project Talent participants and geocode addresses to support research on neighborhood characteristics and cognitive health outcomes related to Alzheimer's disease and related dementias. The project will identify Project Talent participants in the...
- The National Institute on Aging, part of the Department of Health and Human Services National Institutes of Health, awarded $249,000 to The Regents of The University of Colorado on July 1, 2026, under the Aging Research program (CFDA 93.866). The award funds research investigating how beta-amyloid accumulation impacts hypocretin neuron activity and subsequently disrupts sleep architecture in Alzheimer's disease. The research examines whether beta-amyloid accelerates death of hypocretin neurons...
- The National Institute on Aging awarded Colorado State University $808,980 under the Aging Research program (CFDA 93.866) on September 1, 2026, to develop quantile-focused statistical tools and multimodal analyses that identify nonlinear genetic variants and interactions shaping Alzheimer's disease risk and cellular pathogenesis across key brain cell states. The project will create a comprehensive, distribution-aware genetic architecture atlas and deliver four primary products: quantile-specific...
- The National Institute on Aging awarded Drexel University $1,306,728 under the Aging Research program (CFDA 93.866) on August 1, 2026, to conduct a longitudinal, multi-site study examining how individual lifestyle, social circumstances, and neighborhood-level factors influence physical functioning trajectories in older adults across population subgroups and U.S. regions. The research leverages over 30 years of longitudinal data from the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA) cohort and...
- The National Institute on Aging awarded the Regents of the University of Colorado (University of Colorado-Denver) $1.314 million under the Aging Research program (CFDA 93.866) on April 1, 2026, to conduct research on healthcare readiness for rural older adults with critical illness during disasters. The award is classified as a Project Grant. The research will evaluate the long-term effects of extreme weather events on rural intensive care units and the older adults they serve through three...
- The National Institute on Aging awarded The Regents Of The University Of Colorado (doing business as University Of Colorado-Denver) $783,984 on March 15, 2026, under the Aging Research program (CFDA 93.866) to conduct a multisite randomized controlled trial of GAPcareAD, a brief emergency department intervention addressing fall-related care needs for persons living with dementia and their care partners. The intervention adapts the GAPCARE fall prevention program for patients with Alzheimer's...
- The National Institute on Aging awarded the University of California, Los Angeles $623,176 on September 1, 2026, under the Aging Research program (CFDA 93.866) to conduct research on modifiable risk factors for Alzheimer's disease and related dementias among individuals aged 90 and older. The research triangulates evidence across four data sources—the LifeAfter90 Study (1,397 participants, all aged 90), the 90+ Study (1,630 participants, all aged 90), the Health and Retirement Study (3,359...
- Summary The National Institute on Aging (NIA) awarded the University of Montana a $3.04 million Project Grant under the Aging Research program (CFDA 93.866) for a four-year project period extending from September 15, 2025, through September 14, 2029. The research investigates the role of neighborhood social exposome dynamics—encompassing social, psychosocial, and sociodemographic exposures at individual and contextual levels—in risk and resilience to Alzheimer's Disease and Related Dementias...
- The National Institute on Aging awarded The Regents of The University of Colorado, doing business as University of Colorado-Denver, $669,195 on September 1, 2026, under the Aging Research program (CFDA 93.866) to investigate financial toxicity and cognitive impairment in Medicare Advantage enrollees with Alzheimer's disease and related dementias. The research team will leverage and expand a unique data linkage of Medicare claims and consumer credit records to examine financial burden in Medicare...
The National Institute on Aging awarded the Regents of the University of Colorado $904,426 on September 1, 2026, under the Aging Research program (CFDA 93.866) to conduct a mixed-methods investigation of how neighborhood features shape cognitive health across the adult life course. The recipient will conduct in-depth interviews with 240 adults across San Francisco, Denver, Atlanta, and New York City to identify which neighborhood services, amenities, and hazards influence cognitive health behaviors in emerging adulthood (ages 18–29), established adulthood (30–44), midlife (45–64), and later life (65+). Qualitative findings will then inform quantitative analyses using four national longitudinal studies: the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health, Americans' Changing Lives, Reasons for Geographic and Racial Differences in Stroke, and the Health and Retirement Study. These datasets collectively span adolescence to end of life with repeated measurements on nearly 90,000 unique respondents. The project expands a "cognability" measure—inspired by walkability metrics—to capture how neighborhoods shape cognitive health through social and behavioral pathways and to probe timing, scale, and combinations of key neighborhood features. Work is performed in Boulder, Colorado. The period of performance runs from September 1, 2026, through April 30, 2031. This is a Project Grant.
