Project Grant R01AG091586
- The National Institute on Aging awarded $654,506 to The Regents of The University of Colorado, doing business as University of Colorado-Denver, on September 1, 2026, under the Aging Research program (CFDA 93.866). The award funds research into glial-associated immune dysregulation in Alzheimer's disease pathology, specifically investigating how reactive astrocytes drive immune dysfunction, alter dendritic structure in the brain, and contribute to synaptic dysfunction and cognitive decline. The...
- The National Institute on Aging awarded The Regents Of The University Of Colorado (doing business as University Of Colorado-Denver) $783,984 on March 15, 2026, under the Aging Research program (CFDA 93.866) to conduct a multisite randomized controlled trial of GAPcareAD, a brief emergency department intervention addressing fall-related care needs for persons living with dementia and their care partners. The intervention adapts the GAPCARE fall prevention program for patients with Alzheimer's...
- The National Institute on Aging awarded The Regents Of The University Of Colorado, doing business as University Of Colorado-Denver, $1,390,204 on February 15, 2026, under the Aging Research program (CFDA 93.866) to conduct research on the interaction between systemic endothelial glycocalyx fragility and brain dysfunction in aged sepsis survivors. The project will investigate pathologic organ crosstalk between the systemic vasculature and brain following sepsis, with particular focus on...
- The National Institute on Aging awarded the University of Colorado-Denver $429,000 under the Aging Research program (CFDA 93.866) on September 1, 2026, to develop clinical decision support tools and implementation guidance for primary care clinicians and patients navigating Alzheimer's disease blood biomarker testing and diagnostic decision-making. The project, R21AG104791, addresses a gap in primary care capacity to diagnose Alzheimer's disease and incorporate newly FDA-approved blood...
- The National Institute on Aging awarded The Regents of the University of Colorado, doing business as University of Colorado-Denver, $189,963 on July 1, 2026, under the Aging Research program (CFDA 93.866) to support research led by Dr. Carlisle investigating the contributions of biological sex and sex hormones to cognitive reserve across the cognitive spectrum of Alzheimer's disease. The research will assess how estrogen and sex differences affect Alzheimer's disease risk, with particular...
- The National Institute on Aging, part of the Department of Health and Human Services National Institutes of Health, awarded $249,000 to The Regents of The University of Colorado on July 1, 2026, under the Aging Research program (CFDA 93.866). The award funds research investigating how beta-amyloid accumulation impacts hypocretin neuron activity and subsequently disrupts sleep architecture in Alzheimer's disease. The research examines whether beta-amyloid accelerates death of hypocretin neurons...
- The National Institute on Aging awarded $442,485 to The Regents of the University of Colorado (doing business as University of Colorado-Denver) on June 1, 2026, under the Aging Research program (CFDA 93.866) to investigate selective vulnerability of the locus coeruleus and hypothalamus to herpes simplex virus type 1 infection in Alzheimer's disease progression. The research employs spatial transcriptomics and proteomics via the NanoString GeoMx DSP platform alongside in vivo electrophysiological...
- The National Institute on Aging awarded The University of Chicago $597,239 on September 1, 2026, under the Aging Research program (CFDA 93.866) to support investigation of inpatient rehabilitation facility (IRF) utilization and outcomes for older adult patients with and without Alzheimer's disease or other dementias (ADRD). The research examines comparative value and appropriateness of care delivery across post-acute care settings, specifically comparing higher-cost IRF care—which provides acute...
- The National Institute on Aging awarded the Regents of the University of Colorado (University of Colorado-Denver) $1.314 million under the Aging Research program (CFDA 93.866) on April 1, 2026, to conduct research on healthcare readiness for rural older adults with critical illness during disasters. - The National Institute on Aging awarded the University of California, Los Angeles $623,176 on September 1, 2026, under the Aging Research program (CFDA 93.866) to conduct research on modifiable risk factors for Alzheimer's disease and related dementias among individuals aged 90 and older. The research triangulates evidence across four data sources—the LifeAfter90 Study (1,397 participants, all aged 90), the 90+ Study (1,630 participants, all aged 90), the Health and Retirement Study (3,359...
The National Institute on Aging awarded The Regents of The University of Colorado, doing business as University of Colorado-Denver, $669,195 on September 1, 2026, under the Aging Research program (CFDA 93.866) to investigate financial toxicity and cognitive impairment in Medicare Advantage enrollees with Alzheimer's disease and related dementias. The research team will leverage and expand a unique data linkage of Medicare claims and consumer credit records to examine financial burden in Medicare Advantage populations, extending prior work conducted in traditional Medicare that demonstrated impaired financial behavior begins nearly a decade before clinical recognition of Alzheimer's disease. The project addresses a gap in understanding how Medicare Advantage's benefit design, network structure, and financial literacy profiles shape financial outcomes for beneficiaries with cognitive impairment, particularly as Medicare Advantage now covers more than 50 percent of the Medicare population. The research will be conducted by an expert team of economists, health services researchers, and geriatricians at University of Colorado-Denver in Colorado. The period of performance runs through May 31, 2031.
