This Project Grant from the United States Department of Agriculture's National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) through the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) program provides $650,000 to Oklahoma State University from July 1, 2023 through December 31, 2027. The funding supports research investigating the effects of maternal stress on the gut-brain-immune axis in sows and their progeny, and how this impacts offspring health, welfare, and behavioral outcomes. Specifically, the awardee will study the role of gut microbes and the immune system in stressed sows on piglet colonization; characterize the impacts of multiple stressors on the microbiota-brain-immune axis in offspring; and identify molecular microbiota signatures and gut-immune and behavioral phenotypes transmitted to subsequent generations. The results aim to further understanding of how the maternal microbiome and stress responsiveness influence microbial, brain and immune markers in offspring as indicators of better health and welfare.
