About this opportunity

The City of Boston is requesting sealed bids for two new mid-size sport utility vehicles for the Boston Police Department under specification 479636, with bids due October 28, 2026 at 12:00 p.m. at One City Hall Square, Room 808. The vehicles must meet attached specifications or an approved equal; the specification document names Ford Bronco Sport Big Bend as the baseline model.

The scope includes comprehensive police-duty configuration: Federal Signal Pathfinder PF200S17 siren system, Federal Signal lighting packages, Kenwood mobile radio remount systems, and Panorama Antennas BPD-5385 antenna systems. All telecommunications and warning equipment must be installed to BPD standards with detailed wiring per American Wire Gauge specifications, 100-amp weather-proof circuit breakers, fused power distribution, and dedicated grounding. Contractors must coordinate equipment locations and installation procedures directly with BPD Telecom prior to commencing work and provide all hardware, connectors, and parts necessary for complete installation.

The Truck Side Guard Ordinance (City of Boston) applies: vehicles over 10,000 pounds must be equipped with side guards rigidly mounted no more than 21.5 inches above ground with upper edge no more than 14 inches below the vehicle structure, convex mirrors, cross-over mirrors providing visibility down the full vehicle length, and bright yellow blind-spot awareness decals in at least three locations. The average cost for side guard installation is approximately $847 per vehicle, though pilot program experience reached $1,200 per installation. Vendors must schedule inspections before commencing work.

The contract term is one year. Bids must be firm-priced and accompanied by a bid deposit. The City is exempt from federal excise taxes and Massachusetts sales and use tax. Award is contingent on Mayor approval and appropriated-funds availability. The successful bidder must execute the contract and provide performance security within ten calendar days of notice of acceptance.
