Update #3 · Latest ·
forecast updated - This NOFO aims to increase access to harm reduction services for people who currently inject or have a history of injecting drugs (PWID) and reduce incidence of infectious diseases and complications of injection drug use through two components. Component 1 will expand a national network of syringe services programs (SSPs) to facilitate communication and networking among SSPs, other harm reduction programs, and trusted national organizations with a demonstrated portfolio in improving the health of persons who use drugs (PWUD). This component also improves data about SSPs by surveying SSPs to document capacity, needs, and service gaps. Component 2 will increase support and resources to SSPs for implementation of distribution of sterile injection supplies and disposal of used injection supplies; testing, treatment, and prevention of infectious diseases and infectious complications from injection drug use; and mitigation of other harms due to drug use. Applicants may apply for Component 1, Component 2, or both. Expected outcomes include: improved collaboration, communication, and data about SSPs nationwide; increased access to harm reduction services; decreased unsafe injection practices; decreased new infections of HCV, HBV, HAV, HIV, endocarditis, and other infections; decreased overdose rates and mortality; increased capacity for responding to outbreaks of infections associated with injection drug use; and increased services available through SSPs in the United States.
Update #2 ·
Forecast updated - The purpose of this NOFO is to increase access to harm reduction services for people who inject drugs (PWID) and reduce incidence of infectious complications of injection drug use. This NOFO funds two components. Component 1 will fund the expansion of a national network of syringe services programs (SSPs) to facilitate communication and information exchange between and among SSPs, state and local harm reduction coalitions, jurisdictional harm reduction coordinators, and national organizations with a demonstrated portfolio in support of the welfare of PWID. The recipient will improve data and information about SSPs by implementing an annual survey of SSPs to document service delivery capacity, needs, and service gaps. Component 2 will fund increasing the capacity of SSP implementation to enhance distribution and disposal of sterile injection supplies; testing, treatment and prevention of viral hepatitis, HIV, and endocarditis and other infectious complications from injection drug use; and mitigation of other harms due to drug use. Applicants may apply for Component 1, Component 2 or both. Expected outcomes include improved information exchange and data for action about SSPs nationwide; increased access to harm reduction services; decreased unsafe injection practices; decreased new infections of HCV, HBV, HIV, endocarditis, and other infections among PWID; decreased overdose rates and mortality; increased capacity for responding to emerging clusters or outbreaks of infections associated with injection drug use; and increased services available through SSPs in the United States.
Update #1 ·
This four-year program will strengthen the capacity and improve the performance of harm reduction programs throughout the United States. The purpose of this project is to strengthen harm reduction programs' ability to serve people who use drugs and engage in measurement and surveillance. It is comprised of three components: providing technical assistance, using data to assess and improve the utilization of services, and enhancing implementation of services for people who use drugs. Activities will include providing technical assistance to harm reduction programs, harm reduction program monitoring and evaluation, building and sustaining a supportive network for harm reduction programs, and service integration for people who use drugs.
