About this opportunity
The Defense Health Agency is soliciting applications for the Spinal Cord Injury Research Program Translational Research Award with a full application due date of November 12, 2026. The program expects to fund approximately four awards with a total cost ceiling of $2.0 million for single principal investigator projects or $2.16 million under the Early-Career Partnership Option. All applications must name at least one spinal cord injury community partner (lived-experience consultant or community-based organization representative) to provide advice throughout project planning and implementation.
Eligible applicants include extramural and intramural U.S. Department of War organizations, foreign and domestic entities, and for-profit and nonprofit organizations without restriction. The Early-Career Partnership Option allows two principal investigators, with at least one required to have three to seven years of research experience beyond a terminal degree. A new requirement for fiscal year 2026 mandates that each investigator serve as principal investigator on only one Translational Research Award application. If the Early-Career Partnership Option is selected, only the initiating principal investigator submits a pre-application (due August 3, 2026), but all principal investigators must submit full applications. If recommended for funding, each principal investigator will be named on a separate award to the recipient organization(s).
The program funds translational research accelerating promising spinal cord injury research into clinical applications across four priority areas: Acute Injury Intervention, Secondary Health Effects, Psychosocial Well-Being, and Rehabilitation and Regeneration. The maximum period of performance is three years. Awards will be made no later than September 30, 2027, using fiscal year 2026 funds expiring September 30, 2032. Applications are evaluated on translational potential, study design and feasibility, impact on priority areas, patient impact, military health relevance, and personnel qualifications. The program is assigned CFDA 12.420, Military Medical Research and Development.
Synopsis
Summary: The fiscal year 2026 (FY26) Spinal Cord Injury Research Program (SCIRP) Translational Research Award (TRA) supports translational research that will accelerate the movement of promising ideas in spinal cord injury (SCI) research into clinical applications.
Distinctive Features:
• This funding opportunity contains an Early-Career Partnership Option, which allows for two principal investigators (PIs). If this option is selected, at least one of the named PIs must be an early-career investigator. Only the initiating PI will submit a pre-application, but all PIs will need to submit full applications. The partnering PI's application is an abbreviated package specific to their distinct portion of the research project. If recommended for funding, each PI will be named on a separate award to the recipient organization(s). Be advised, all associated applications for a research project may be withdrawn if the initiating or partnering application is rejected or administratively withdrawn.
• Applications to this funding opportunity must name at least one SCI community partner (e.g., SCI Lived-Experience Consultant, representative of community-based organizations) who will provide advice and consultation throughout the planning and implementation of the research project.
