About this opportunity
The Defense Health Agency, through the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs (CDMRP), is soliciting applications for the Ovarian Cancer Research Program Pilot Award with a full application deadline of October 1, 2026. The program expects to fund approximately 13 pilot awards totaling $4.55 million, with individual award caps of $350,000 and a 2-year performance period.
Eligible applicants include extramural and intramural U.S. Department of Defense organizations, foreign and domestic organizations, and for-profit and nonprofit entities without restriction. Principal Investigators must be at the postdoctoral fellow level or above, with each investigator limited to one Pilot Award application. No cost share is required.
The mechanism prioritizes innovation; research projects must demonstrate exceptional scientific merit coupled with innovative concepts or theories in ovarian cancer that could lead to critical discoveries or major advancements. Preliminary data are not required but are permitted. Six areas of emphasis are supported: developing novel therapeutic strategies; identifying new strategies for risk stratification, screening, and early detection; improving care and survivorship; identifying relationships between military service-related exposures and ovarian cancer; investigating innovative prevention approaches; and understanding basic biology and etiology. Clinical trials are not supported.
The application process includes a blinded pre-application stage due July 13, 2026, at 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time. Pre-applications must contain no identifying information regarding the PI, collaborators, or their organizations. Invitations to submit full applications are expected August 12, 2026. Direct cost restrictions limit travel to one investigator per year for scientific and technical meetings and prohibit tuition and clinical trial costs. Peer review is scheduled for November 2026, with programmatic review in January 2027 and awards anticipated no later than September 30, 2027. Funding obligations must be expended by September 30, 2032.
The award falls under CFDA 12.420, Military Medical Research and Development.

Distinctive Features: Innovation is key. Research projects that demonstrate exceptional scientific merit but lack innovation do not meet the intent of the mechanism. Preliminary data are not required but are allowed for this mechanism.
This mechanism includes a blinded pre-application component. Pre-applications to this funding opportunity will undergo a blinded pre-application screening. While preparing your pre-application, do not include any material that may identify the PI, a collaborator, or the organization of the PI or collaborator.
