PROJECT NUMBER: NE FTFW FTNI 205(1)

PROJECT NAME: Buffalo Bridge

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The project may consist of the following:

Piers: There is spalling between 2" and 6" deep near the waterline on the piers. The height of the spalls appears to be 4' to 5'. The suggested repair is to remove the loose and delaminated concrete at the bottom of the pier walls and patch the areas either with shotcrete or concrete repairs. It may be necessary to install a temporary water diversion at the base of the piers in order to perform the work. This will require an environmental evaluation and may require the need for additional permits and restrictions while working in the stream channel.

Abutments: There are hairline cracks in the bearing seats, backwalls and columns of abutment possibly caused by leaking expansion joints. The suggested repair is to repair or replace the existing expansion joints.

Abutments: There is erosion at the base of west abutment, exposing the columns. The suggested repair includes in the placement of rip‐rap around the base of the west abutment to direct flow and protect against scour. The slab on top of the west abutment is cracked. Since the slab is a structural element, we will analyze the slab to determine what type of repair is necessary to ensure its structural integrity and prepare the necessary repair details.

Concrete deck: There are numerous transverse cracks on underside of deck at 2' to 4' on centers. The suggested repair is to seal concrete deck with epoxy sealer to prevent moisture penetration. There were no photos of the cracking so a sealer may work.

Girders: There is light rust with minor section loss in some areas of steel girders, mostly at the top flange near the east abutment where wetted by expansion joint drainage. The gap between girder and concrete deck is likely caused by rust pack. The steel expansion bearings at the east abutment are off center.

Expansion joints: There is a filled expansion joint at the west (fixed) end and a sliding plate expansion on east end. Suggested repair is to clean and seal joints at the east and west abutments.
