About this opportunity

The Department of Veterans Affairs Veterans Health Administration Veterans Integrated Service Network 2 has issued a Special Notice announcing its intent to award a sole source contract to Biomerieux, Inc. for the purchase of two Biofire Filmarray Torch Module Boxes. The contract will support the East Orange VA Medical Center's Molecular Laboratory, which seeks to expand its diagnostic testing capabilities. Specifically, the notice pertains to medical diagnostic equipment that will enable testing of respiratory, gastrointestinal, and blood culture identification panels. The procurement is classified under NAICS code 334516 for Analytical Laboratory Instrument Manufacturing and PSC code 6640 for Laboratory Equipment and Supplies. The special notice was posted on April 11, 2025, with a response deadline of April 18, 2025.

The primary objective of this sole source contract is to enhance the medical center's pathogen testing capabilities by adding two module boxes to an existing Biofire Torch system. The contract will be awarded directly to Biomerieux, Inc., located in Salt Lake City, Utah, with no competitive bidding process. The modules are specifically chosen to provide more accurate and faster diagnostic results compared to traditional testing methods. No specific eligibility criteria are outlined beyond the sole source selection of Biomerieux, Inc. The contract represents a targeted procurement to improve the molecular laboratory's diagnostic efficiency, focusing on comprehensive pathogen testing across respiratory, gastrointestinal, and blood culture identification panels. The primary point of contact for this solicitation is Contract Specialist Barry Sawyer, who can be reached at Barry.Sawyer@va.gov for any potential inquiries.

Notice text

This is a notice of intent to award a sole source contract and is not a request for quotes.

The Department of Veterans Affairs East Orange VAMC intends to award a Sole Source open market action contract for the purchase of two (2) Biofire Filmarray Torch Module Boxes.

Name of Contractor:

Biomerieux, Inc.

Street Address:

515 Colorow Drive

City, State, Zip:

Salt Lake City, UT 84108

The East Orange VAMC Molecular laboratory located at the East Orange VA Medical Center needs Biofire Torch Modules that have capability for running the BioFire Diagnostics Respiratory panel, Gastrointestinal Panel and Blood Culture Identification panel. The analyzer delivers accurate results testing for the most common pathogens associated with an infectious disease state. Both the RP, GI, and BCID panels will provide improved, comprehensive, result turn-around time as compared to traditional methods and reduce downstream testing.

The reason that this is the recommended sole-source is because the lab already has two Biofire modules but has requested two more to go with current system; the Biofire Torch, which is the only system that the Module boxes have compatibility with. These are add-ons to an existing unit that work seamlessly.
